Help choosing a console
« on: November 15, 2008, 10:09:51 AM »
Ok im not sure if this was posted before.

But i'm at a cross road people, I have the choice of a console coming for Christmas but I'm not sure what i want/need

I had a psp which i loved but sold off so i could buy either a Wii,PS3 or Xbox360

I initially wanted a ps3 but because of the limitations of the kind of games that are available...I'm looking at the innovative Wii...but then that also has limitations and haven't been a big fan of nintendo since the super

So im at a cross road please help...

hmmm

make a small table of your wants out of a console
will you be buying and playing games extensively?
will you be wanting a media device?
is it gonna be just yu playing or will family and friends be involved??

i was at a crossroad as well but i narrowed it down to wanting an xbox and a wii
wii for my mom and me and my friends, id love to get my mom into something fun that we both could enjoy

and teh xbox cause it has games  i want and iam a media whore so i had to consider the ps3s blu ray advantage... but beyond blu ray... it has nothing to offer.
Soooo iam building my new pc, ill throw blu ray in that and ill use my xbox for everything else media related..
just need to find a way to pay for a nice big hd monitor for my pc AND buy a decent size hd tv for everyone else in the house to get in on the hd movie lovin goodness.

and upgrade to like a 6 meg or higher flow account :)

a member here once told me

"pick the console with the games you like and the games that you think you will like later on"

I was gonna be a fanboy and buy a PS3, but after re-assessing, i ended up getting the 360. Sure I missed out on MGS4 which I eventually played when I did get a PS3 but thats just one game. Crixx also made some valid points with regard to friends or so thing.

I have a PS3 and a Xbox360, and my personal opinion is that the Xbox360 is the better system to get right now. It has a bigger and better game library, the online service is unified across all games, and is the best overall (although you have to pay for the full experience), and its cheaper.

The PS3 however, on paper is the better console from a purely technical standpoint. Its the cheapest blu-ray player you'll find, has superior multimedia capabilities, a free online service, some killer exclusive games, bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, and a memory card reader as well.

In short, it all comes down to the games man.

I stand corrected then, but show me some examples though.

In the context of an 'all-in-one' media hub, the PS3 has the slight advantage in my opinion,
due to the higher number of connectivity/output options.  I've even discovered how to use my headset,
even though there is no official headset out for the PS3 (and I dont mean just for voice eh).

You need to get one of the newer models with the 'Falcon' CPU inside.

lol @ arcman theorem

Saw the Ps3 in action today again with Soul Calibur 4 and Devil May Cry 4. Great games but I dunno. Even on a big screen samsung hd, I wasn't impressed by the graphical output.

The quality of the BluRay movies set the bar very high. Tough act to follow.

The Soul Calibur 4 didn't feel as fluid and responsive as say Soul Calibur 2 did. Maybe the wireless controls.

PS3 owners, which is the game that show cases the power of this system the best??

xbox 360's price point is making the decision very easy in their favor. Now that my fav PS3 game (Tekken) is making it's way to the xbox, I'm also in Cross's boat.

Already got a Wii. So it's a strictly xbox360 vs PS3 argument.

Online is going to weigh considerably. Blink for Operation Nude Sweat 2.0 immc.

the 360 also has the dreaded RROD, high failure rate is my main beef wit the 360 and payin to play a game online i already payed 4, it has killer games don't get me wrong GoW2 is friggin BAD, Mass effect also good etc but the PS3 also has strong games like R2, KZ2 ( i hav d beta an it kills CoD anyday of the week) LBP is good for family i hghly recommend it, also with playstation home coming out the online scene on PS3 wud b much better than it currently is an still FREE, so all in all it all comes down to like wat other ppl said waht wat games really interest u now and more importantly look at what comin in the future, an an u CANT AVOID THE RROD it can happen to anyone jus pray an hope u dont get it thats all u can do

Dont worry, you just have to use your brain. The main problem is overheating so dont be a retard and put the back of the 360 (where all the hot air is blown out) up againngt a wall. Just keep it where the hot air can get out of the immediate area around the xbox and put a lasko fan behind it lol. My current setup entails 2 computer fans at the rear and a lasko fan blowing over the xbox to make sure no hot air liming around the system. I have  aconsole from the 2006 line which is more RROD prone than present day. so far i only got green rings :D + if anything goes wrong just contact them and they send a pre paid envelope thing n u just send it for them to exchange for a working 360 and some free stuff lol.

Basically PS3 is failing at this point. For games (especially online) Xbox is the way to go. If u a family guy Wii is the best choice.

wrong about dat one my cuz got the RROD an he put on his 360 for the 1st time in about 4 months recently an as soon as he put it on it got RROD so its not only overheating is da problem M$ wanted to b 1st an rushed da console out n how exactly is da ps3 failing at this point M$ had a year head start, n da online thing 4 the 360 yes its better right now but the ps3 is catchin up in features.

Me personally I don't like paying to play a game I already bought online espicially with d kinda characters yuh does meet on XBL.

On an unrelated note can u dload the NXE an install it on a 360 manually without having to go on XBL. wanna know cuz my cuz doesn't hav XBL an might want to get it

The argument that PS3 doesn't have a great library of games is utter garbage.

There are so many quality games out there, multiplatform and exclusive that are just as great on ps3 as on xbox 360.

To name a few:
Little Big Planet
Resistance 2
Motorstorm 2
Metal Gear Solid 4

Mirror's Edge
Far Cry 2
Call of Duty: World at War
Soul Calibur 4
Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm
Bioshock
Dead Space
Socom Confrontation
Killzone 2 (in February)
Infamous (next year)
The Agency (next year)
MAG (next year....hopefully...)
Playstation Home (Virtual Social Network...launching free very soon...)
Singstar
Buzz Quiz
Uncharted
Heavenly Sword

Endwar
Need for Speed Undercover

The red are ps3 exclusives.

So by going either PS3 or 360   (I know nothing much about the Wii...so thats like exempt from my post)
you will be offered wayy more quality games than you can buy.
PS3 also has the Playstation Store with Quality Quality downloadable games. (Fl0w, Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty, Calling all Cars etc...)
And Xbox Live Marketplace has their amazing exclusive offerings as well.

So with the notion of this thread, base you purchase on what others have..
If you know many on the Playstation platform...go ps3 so you can be online with them.
If you know most on xbox 360, well thats the logical choice.

Both are strong and weak in their various aspects...having both is the best...but for now choose wisely.

@ NGW....
I dunno how you weren't impressed by PS3 on that screen..
Possible it wasn't connected with HDMI, or set to its full capability.
I can assure you that on a 52" screen with HDMI set to Full colour etc...
Soul Calibur is viewtiful.
Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet, Killzone 2 (Beta), and the old Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, all showcase PS3's amazing HD capability.

I'd like to add a few to that list Apprentice:

Infinite Undiscovery
Eternal Sonata
and of course as previously mentioned Tekken 6.
Ninja Gaiden Sigma
Resident Evil 5
Devil May Cry 4
Gran Turismo (5?)

Exclusives I can think of are things like

God of War 3
Grand theft Auto 4, which not remain exclusive
2 of 3 versions of Final Fantasy 13 - I think. Please correct me if I'm wrong here.

I've actually begun to lose the PS3 faith as well, recently started to waver just because of this Tekken blasphemy. Honestly, I want to be convinced to go PS3. I utterly loathe that 360 control. Isn't HD-DVD supposed to be circling the drain now anyways?

Thanks guys for all your help keep it coming, but i'm seriously leaning towards the Xbox360's side because of the fact that there are alot of games coming out that can be played on both systems.

I think the final decider will be this weekend when i get a chance to test both systems at gaming emporium.\

Anyonw have any links in zero media? I left my Ps2 there since December last year and up till now they haven't gotten a lens for it.....Help :S

agreed @ cross.

nice post Apprentice and Ario, that helps.

The Ps3 was hooked up with HDMI. Don't get me wrong, it looked great, but we had just looked @ the TMNT Movie on BluRay on that same screen seconds before switching to the PS3. The graphincs on the BluRay movie blew away the PS3 graphics by a mile.

Probably an unfair comparison. Like the CGI cut scenes in Final Fantasy vs the in game graphics. Maybe nexgen consoles will finally close that gap.

To get technical, it looked almost like the PS3 didn't have anti aliasing and anisotropic filtering enabled. Devil May Cry 4 trees were shimmering and jaggy compared to the smooth, crisp TMNT trees.

This is an issue I've noticed on both the PS3 and 360 though less apparent on the 360 probably because it has some hardware support for it in the gpu. To me its the first thing you notice when you compare the pc version to the console version.

Another point to be made is that the Xbox 360 controller is WAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY more comfortable for FPS games and 3rd person shooters like Halo 3, COD 4 & 5 or Gears of War 2..It's just a very uncomfortable experience playing on the PS3 controller because of the analog sticks being at the same level, and the overall shape of the controller not feeling at all snug in the hands while sweating an FPS....

And I too have had my Xbox 360 since January 2006, and have never had a problem..I also happen to own a PS3 and a Wii. The PS3 I use mainly for BluRay movies which are extremely beautiful on a High Definition Television, the games are bleh..Not really into the Resistance movement, in my opinion its Sony's attempt at Halo, and its still graphically inferior. It still feels cheap to me. Gears of War 2 on the other hand, that is a visually stunning piece of video game heaven, and the gameplay is fast paced and exciting.

But the decision is yours to make, but keep what the previous persons have posted in mind.

You have a few things to consider;

1. Are you planning to game online? - Xbox Live vs. PSN (To me there are more Xbox Live Trinis than PS3)
2. Are you willing to pay for your online experience - Xbox Live (via CC or 12 Month Subscription Cards for full game support across the board) vs. PSN (Free but not supported by all games)
3. Do you have an HDTV to experience the 1080p goodness of either the Xbox 360 or PS3
4. If you don't have an HDTV, and you plan on using your PC monitor as an option, the Xbox 360 has a VGA Adapter, not sure about the PS3, the PS3 guys on here can tell you..
5. Games, Games and More Games...The Xbox 360 due to it's early start has a larger library of games, some of which are available for both systems, so the trade off is up to you
6. NXE vs. Home - Xbox 360 is set to launch the NXE this Wednesday and it is supposed to be its answer to Sony's Home on the PS3, another cool feature which is only available in the US and Canada is Netflix streaming on the Xbox 360, which pretty much turns the Xbox into a Movie Rental machine based on your Netflix account. 10,000+ movies in the Netflix library is available for streaming to your Xbox 360 and HDTV, pretty cool business decision..
7. RROD vs. PS3 Stability - Yes, the XBox 360 has had its failure rates, but with the new Falcon chips, the RROD has not been in the news at all, older versions of the 360 yes, but the newer 360's with the smaller cooler chip are more reliable

Bottom line, its your decision...Choose Wisely...Young Padawan!! LOL
