If my X2 6000+ (3.0GHz) wasn't currently in use, I'd have offered it. It is in a system  I have renting right now and that system doesn't recognize AMD quads

Well basically a the lowest Core 2 Quad is the Q6600 which runs at 2.4GHz default. The X4 9600 is a pre TLB error CPU meaning it has a bug (not one that will normally affect a desktop user but a bug none the less), what this means for performance is that the mobo makers came up with a BIOS update to fix the bug, but killed about 10% performance in the process. A X4 9600 runs at 2.4GHz default (I think) but CLOCK for CLOCK is NOT as fast as a Core 2 Quad @ 2.4GHz. So what you have is a under performing quad core that uses more power.

As a side note the Phenoms are NOT bad processors, they are priced competitively to match it's intel counter part, hence a X4 9850 BE running @ 2.5GHz is priced comparatively to a Q6600 @ 2.4GHz. They both trade benchmark score and perform comparatively. However the Intel CPU uses less power (generally). So for a non-overclocker from a performance stand point an comparatively costed X4 will perform similar to its intel priced counter parts. Naturally Intel high end quads are unmatched in terms of both performance and price.

Hmm very interesting, i thought that amd phenom was not underpowered... ok score i for intel again... but what if the phenom was not underpowered... will it turn the tables? all research seems inconclusive

Yeah...you've pretty much gotta put a gun to my head to buy a Phenom over a Intel Quad for my personal system. But @ $950, you cant possibly go wrong with this purchase.
