hmmm....Tom cruise plays a bloddy Geishin *foreigner*

The problem arch is that movies generally serve to educate ppl to a great extent on the history, topics and themes interwoven with the story. Ppl will look at that movie and think that there were white Samurai existing in Japan during that era, and that is a major miscontrsiation of history. To become a samurai you have to be either born into the family or specially adorned by the emperor - like that would ever happen. The social structure of japan in the 1300's was soo strict that even your cousins born to your father's sister would never be able to become samurai. And now you want to tell me a fresh water yankee can become a keeper of bushido? you have to be smoking.

My real problem with the movie is not Tom Cruise becoming a samurai...although that is a pack of nonsense by itself.

It's the fact that they felt they needed him in the first place, in such a context, to tell the story.

It's a symptom of the whiteboy-absorbs-foriegn-culture-becomes-better-at-it-than-natives-and-saves-their-world syndrome. Best seen "artistically" in flicks like Dancing with Wolves, Atlantis, the Mummy Returns etc.

Of course every culture will try to make their members and their worldview seem superior, but sometimes the efforts are too flickin out there to take seriously.

Why didn't they just have Cruise as a reporter, or a bureaucrat?
Why even use him? Why not use a Westernised Japanese youth, like one of those same young men who Cruise was hired to train?

Of course, this is all a matter of opinion and perspective, and it depends on how deeply you want to read into the movie, and which parts you want to read into. I'm speaking from my viewpoint, and I'm wary and weary of themes like this. It bothers me even more because of the respect I have for the genre.

But that's just me. If yuh want a nice lil chop-up and action, you big up.

The history of movies has shown that... They were always meant to be an entertainment vehicle first... But some smart people realised the effectiveness of the media and decided to use it to make it an educational tool. Used to show view points and points in history that is very hard to accept or absorb from a book...
As KAyo said the documentary on History channel and National Geographic was used to tell the true story and many people eyes would be open to learning more about ancient japanese culture after seeing this movie.. SOmetimes a lie is the pathway to truth ?

I don't know about smart people. EVERY artist uses art to push an agenda, whether it's a national, religious, racial, social, political, financial or personal one. It was never "only about entertainment". When you create art, whether you recognise it or not, you're making a statement about the world around you.

Geez allyuh coulda at least spell samurai rite on d title.
anyway, i'm gonna to see it, just to see how hollywood justifies this misguided concept, if i'll pay to do so, is another thing.

There are two ills needed for success, skill and will. Which one do you value more?

allyuh not takin this a lil too personal come on man ah mean is not exactly a reality documentary like wha mel gibson did with braveheart which was real foakin bad on d scene but it should be good is about some drunkard us soldier who get call in to train a japanese mercenary army to get rid of samurai that says hollywood fiction all over it

jus have a problem with tom cruise acting as a samurai
The world is heading to destruction day by day even if a man of  incredible strength were to arise he wouldn\'t be able to stop it

Just thought I mention my thoughts on this movie:

It was probably one of the best movies I have seen in years.Abolutely magnificent. If there's one movie I give Best Picture to it's this.
Very powerful and moving.

The historical discontinuities didn't bother me in the slightest.Historical fiction in some occassions turns out to be better and more gripping than the real thing.Anyone who disagrees just got b**** slapped by the mighty "Romance of the Three Kingdoms".
Tom really played his best role ever in this I think.

i saw it the other night, i thought it was gonna be total crap, it was actually not half bad at all.
i'm not much of a tom cruise fan but he played his part well.
The movie's most impressive feature was that my dad stayed awake through it, he didnt fall asleep...yay!

Like acting.Tom Cruise is an excellent actor.

If you put martial artists in a film you just get bad acting galore.
