Mafia PC :
pros
- better story than grand theft, more immersiion
-better graphics than even Vice City [ models have spheres for eyes!]
-better performance : GTA3 played at 10-15fps on my TNT2 at 640x480,Mafia played at 1024x768 even thought it had shadows and much better textures/models
cons
-feels kinda old with those 30s cars and guns
-short
-HARD!!!!

GTA PS2/PC/Xbox
pros
-plays great if you have a beast of a pc or a console
-70s disco feel
-DX9 light FX
-helicopter etc.

Cons
-poor graphics, the sky has NO CLOUDS!!, that guy has blocks for hands!!
-short and shallow

Nice thread. I won't vote. I love the both of them too much. :smile:

But you made a few mistakes with the pros and cons. I'll give my input.

GTA3 had performance problems on some computers, but no way did it have worse performance than Mafia. I was able to play both GTA 3 and GTAVC on my Geforce 3 with everything maxed out and a smooth, high framerate. But as I said, performance varied.

On the other hand, Mafia was a processor killer that had to tweaked like mad and run in a medium resolution.

I would give their performance about equal, although in my experience, GTA (both titles) beat Mafia by miles.



Another thing...No GTA game has ever been short or shallow. Particularly not GTA3 and VC. The replay value for those games is through the roof. Beating the main story alone easily takes twice the time of beating Mafia, and then you still have dozens of missions and minigames to partake in. Mafia has an okay length, but the GTA games have length and and gameplay variety to spare.

That said, Mafia was an incredible game. I wrote about it here on my site.
The gunfights, the story, the atmosphere...we won't be seeing another like that for a long time.

Still...I refuse to choose.

The choice is not difficult for me, I was immeresed in the GTA series since the first title and helped write and theorize many patches for the 2nd and 3rd installments. GTA is the most wickedly entracing con FPS titles ever produced. And the only thing others can do is build on the legacy of all 4 games. Mafia was a decent title and held many of the aspects which made GTA so near and dear to us all. But nothing beats the original in terms of fun, story depth, replay value, humor, playability and freedom to do whatever the HELL u want.

Try listening to chatterbox on Mafia and u'll see my point.

i dont know what angered me the most about GTA3 the seemily mindless gameplay or the fact it didnt feel like the other version. GTA is about the driving and i do enjoy it and they have manage to maintain some of the old arcade feel of the previous versions. maybe im getting old but i can seem to play it for very long as it begins to get senseless and boring after a while. sure its got extra skills and tasks they all seem distractive rather than entertaining. VC is a bit better cause its more structured and wont run like a hog. it was a good game and i even bought GTA VC ofcourse i really cant tell you if it was cause of the 80s music or the hype.

mafia was on the other hand more my kinda game. dont get me wrong i do like to bash skulls but give me a reason other than it being cool to do it. mafia had a great (but typical) storyline and the only downfall was that 30s cars werent glitsy enough to be all that enjoyable. the realism made it all the more terrible since you knew you were driving an old car. yet nothing could beat a old style drive by and police chases. the graphics were impressive much more so than the arcade style of GTA3 and they had an eye for detail which added to the old mafia flicks of the past i love so much. a downfall for most ppl is the difficulty of the game which when you reach the motor track becomes apparent (they even release patches to fix it) yet if you've got tack rising to the challenge makes it even more exciting. also like max payne many ppl hate the yapping of the main character yet is say once again its done in the old style mafia flicks. over all mafia is a better game. youll laugh at your enemies, sob when you pal gets hit and grab your tommy gun when they try to F*** with ya! oooooooh tommy gun.
