It amazing how the prices of these quality units compare to what u had to pay for a smaller, lower quality unit a couple years back. Definately will be getting myself on of those eventually.

While the physical connection is important, it is 10X more important to make sure that the monitor is HDCP compliant. If it is not, then forget about watching any type of HD content from HD-DVD or Blu Ray discs, without taking a severe quality and resolution hit, anyway. One such monitor is the Samsung SM205BW

damn, back to the shopping cart I go then... cuz my choice doesn't seem to be HDCP compliant either :(

EDIT:

Forget that HDCP for now oui!!!!
The price is waaaaay above my budget, so back to the original choice, and later, when prices fall, I'll think I'll consider one for HD

LMAO @ men bigging up HDCP... do you all even KNOW what that stands FOR? High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection. AKA DRM infected, AKA stealing ur DIGITAL RIGHTS... LMAO. Dudes... HDCP is something you pay for, knowingly or not. Meaning Intel has a patent for the chip design that gives you 'HDCP' certification. Coupled with a DRM aware OS, say like Vista and an TRUE HD drive and media say like Blue ray and HD-DVD, its basically all parts that make up RESTRICTING your ability to use your media in a way YOU deem fit. Meaning, BR won't WORK UNLESS you have HDCP, UNLESS you have DRM infected software like Vista and it gives the manufacturers the right to say WHERE you can watch ur content, how many TIMES you can, if you can back it up (lemme answer this now, NO)... you guys should be more careful with what you tout as a GOOD idea. Read around the forums now and again, I constantly post in the "selling our digital rights" thread. If you've never read it before, I suggest you head over and read it up. You'll see how MS and other big manu (read intel) are slowly but surely pulling in the net around us... before you know it, you can't take a $HIT without MS knowing about it and having to ask them for permission.

In fact read the little Wiki on it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDCP
Pay particular attention to the part that says:
Quote
For example, High-definition digital video content must be restricted to DVD quality on non-HDCP compliant video outputs when requested by the source.

Considering how much I got the lcd for, and also that I use linux, I'll watch what I want, when I want.

Plus with true 1080i/720p/480p capacity as much as intel making money I won't complain

We hear yuh loud and clear there, the whole situation is just a sh!tty one, but what do you suggest as an alternative? The only way we getting away from this DRM thing is if everyone switch to linux like prowl, or don't buy any new hardware. Wanna buy a dx10 vid card? Make up your mind that its DRM infected.

DRM is not a good thing, but it is always nice to have the feature to view these types of content than not to.

The question is, when they finally sprang their trap... how will it affect other content? if you have a DRM infected drive, display, OS and video card... whats to stop them from displaying a nice lil pop-up saying: "The media you are attempting to view is illegal content as it does not have requried signatures (aka not windows formats) and thus cannot be shown on your display..." I mean really, what would stop them?

Having hdcp on a display means drm crap players - bluray and hd-dvd will display on it. That's all.

It's better to have it on the display than not. If you dont have an hdcp display, dont even bother with hddvd or bluray.

those prices are expected to drop my mid year, once the players hit the $200 mark they'll start selling like hot cakes! when $300 burners arrive any copy protection will be lost as hackers will always find a way around this crap. so give them 1 year to enjoy their hdcp.

Well I know the gun with which to shoort BR and HD-DVD encryption is already done.. its cracking the keys that'll be the trick. We'll see in time. Software to circumvent hardware, but not just hardware, different parts + the OS...

if you're talking about computer monitors, the price of an HD player is $200 (xbox) + power dvd version that plays hd.
