Discussion:DX9 hardware v DX 10 hardware
« on: November 13, 2006, 02:52:16 PM »
Well, with the release of the 8800gtx(circa 640 USD) and the 8800GTS(circa 475 to 513 USD)
we now have DX10 hardware for vista and beyond.

Also, as expected with a release like this, we have great price reductions on existing DX10 hardware.
Such as the 7950gtx(512 mb) dropping to 279 USD(pricewatch)   and the 7900 gt now at 239 USD (new egg)
We now have that proverbial , rock and a hard place choice to make.

Killer dx9 hardware at impossible to ignore prices!!

And insanely powerful impossibly to ignore dx 10 hardware, while the 8800 gtx is clearly out of our budget.
THe 8800 gts at 475 and up is ALMOST attainable.

Vista launching soon, Crysis on the horizon.

Do we continue purchasing dx 9 at lower prices, combined with core 2 duo is of course a formidable pairing
while the core 2 duo plus 8800 gtx or gts ownz all your base

oh and kentsfield releasing this month as well.

Lets get the discussion in guys.

Iam upgrading starting end of year
and i ddint predict dx 10 hardware till about mid january to february

so iam at that cross road, do i get a 7950 gtx 512 mb or do i wait till feb and hope that a gts goes down
if ati is releasing dx 10 soon ( i honestly have no idea) to compete and force prices to go down, then even better (i guess ).

You're better off waiting for DAAMITS part to at least push prices down somewhat. If however you want to opt for the existing DX9 parts which are by no means laughable then that would push and upgrade to DX10 further down the line. I say wait till about Feb of next year. In the least the prices of the Gosu DX9 parts will drop again. If I recall, you will be undergoing a platform revision (i.e. P4 to Core 2) so I suggest you wait as the prices are set to drop early next year I believe as well as the introduction of new Core 2 and C2Q parts as well.

Wait till next year and get a DX10 part , your 6800 is no slouch , it can last a few more months . The money you save will be worth it.
By february we should see an 8800GS or something so for 250-300 usd , plus 8600 cards sometime after . It will be worth the wait .. Especially if you can unlock the GS to GTX : D.

lol id love to unlock like i did with my vanilla 6800

as for the p4 to core 2, lol iam dyingggg to make that upgrade!!

but after seeing all the benchies and reviews of the 8800 i believe intel will have to release another batch of conroes to feed that beast.

I thought i coulda hold out with meh x800 pro for a lil while (it was still runnin the route) then they started making games supporting only shader model 3.0...(splinter cell double agent anyone) so i have no choice but to upgrade right now ( that sexxxy x1950 pro...)

In regards to waitin for dx10 or goin for a killer dx9 card i say go for the dx9.
. At present im not seein any games using dx10, and gettin a relatively cheap dx9 card with uberpower makes sense in my book. Yea the dx10 cards perform better, but over a certain amount of frames i dont see the HUGE  jump in price being worth it. some of the bess dx9 cards are rather powerful and playin everything out therewith all the icing. And hell crysis will run man. Let dx10 work out dey bugs n somesuch. I not jumpin dat bandwagon right now @ all.

The DX10 cards are worth the wait... And even if you buy now , the money , the 8800GTX is twice the price of an x1950xt but also twice the speed. Of course you not gonna see dx10 in use anytime soon , it can't be used until Vista, but as soon as march with Crysis there will be games to use it .
Both Berzerker and Crixx should wait , what sense it have in upgrading from one dx9 card thats good enough for all your games , to another?

better plan.

if you got the dollars, get the the dx9 card now.

when yuh games start to stress and dx10 performance is necessary, sell it and get the dx10

people do it on the forums all the time.

i would say go with some dread dx9 card for the time being, like for instance you could a x1950xtx for about 350us (if you have that kinda money). and that is at least near the performance of the 8800 in most current games according to tom's vga charts.

as far as i remember the 8800 has like more than double the performance of dx 9 cards

how is that near?

Nah boy Crixx.  7900 series ftw.

I don't think there's any game out now, or coming out within the next 6 months
that will FORCE me to upgrade from this 7900GS (well, except Crysis of course, but thats just ONE).

I say, get a 7950 GTX if you can afford it.  By all means wait on the DX10 parts to 'mature' first.
ATI readying their R600 beasts.  At least wait and lets see if this trumps Nvidia again.

I was just wondering, which card's the top between the 7900GS and the 7900GT

I'm thinking the GT cuz it's the more expensive card and has 24 pipelines or something so?

I'm planning to buy a Geforce 8800 in February next year. The performance just seems amazing but I only decided to buy it because I'm building a new system and decided to wait and save a lil more and eventually get a monitor that can handle high resolutions. I really think a good dx9 card should be more than enough for most ppl at standard resolutions plus I think its gonna be at least a year and a half to two years  before dx10 really takes off.

The GT is the better one.  The GS is essentially a slightly crippled GT, but the large difference
in price makes the GS a better value price/performance wise, and there are people who would
OC the GS to near GT performance.  Not recommended if you need to eventually sell it.

crixx just watch the charts  and then come back to me i buy a x1950xtx after takin in that chart for days and based on frame rate comparison.. at lower resolutions 124x768, 1280x1024, the x1950xtx owns second only to x1900xtx cf and x1950xtx cf of course

here it is in case you cant find it

well of course if u game at mediocre resolutions, an 8800GTX aint for u (ppl still play at 1024x768?). but please, if u will, take a look at oblivion at 1600x1200. there is no way u can say a X1950XTX's performance is near an 8800GTX.....things like this make me laugh so hard. in addition to those charts, u could look for some reviews of the card.

Something wrong with 1024 x 768 now?
Playing at that res assures me that I'll have NO frame-rate issues.
I will ALWAYS trade image-quality for frame-rate.  ESPECIALLY more so
now that I'm playing online.  I already have TSTT shitty pings to deal with.
No need to add slowdown due to hi-res to that mix.

No need to rub our 'lesser mortal' faces in it Jedi (padawan?)
We shall eventually get to the 1600 x 1200 levels.

i wasnt rubbing anyone's face in anything. read the post properly. will u buy an 8800GTX to game at 1024x768?? does that make much sense to u? Xerotolerant said the X1950XTX was close to performance at lower resolutions, but anyone who owns either card surely wouldnt be using those resolutions. didnt mean to offend anyone. was jus trying to bring a point across....

Well for me I need to play @ 1600x1050 at good frame rates with decent eye candy!

but at the current dx10 prices I can wait for them to drop, a good dx9 card will hold me out for now.
