um.... gamers dont need 16 gigs of memory, thats a ludacris idea so stop right there.

As for video editors..... yes they need lots of memory and if you need more memory than 4 to 8 gigs

GO BUY A FREAKING WORKSTATION NOT A LAPTOP!! duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I have to agree with this here. there is no way any gamer needs 16 or even 4 gigs of ram. also i cannot see many power users spending tedious hours in front of a laptop editing/compiling/decoding anyway. long and short........mac's definitely arent for everybody.....

Not all video editing requires tons of memory. Some does, splicing frames and chunks of video doesn't I guess effects will though I've never touched that. I've seen it more heavy on processor usage.

just a thought, isn't the mac pro a desktop?
any how as far as i see encoding will take all the memory you give it and still ask for more, and also something you should note in a time sensative situation, the 2hrs you shave off your encoding time for your boss' tv add on the due date counts and is worth it in most cases.

but my biggest thing was that it supported 16gb of ram and then i saw some asus board that could do it too, unfortunately it has only 4 slots... and i dont know where to find 4gb memory modules..

the mac pro is using a server board, and server chips - i.e. xeons, along with server memory - i.e. FB dimms.

Converting and editing video in my experience hasnt needed much memory - files were large, about 12 GB for a half hour of southpark, but the streaming nature of cutting out commercials, and encoding to xvid or other format doesnt need memory. effects may use it, but that wont interest me. Again, not all video requires oodles of memory.

Even then, a large pc case will fit the eatx boards required for that much memory. It's just an intel 5000 series chipset. Nothing there hardware-wise is exclusive to mac, save the "new bios".

Nothing new save the custom layout of the mobo since apples are reversed from a motherboard orientation point of view. And honestly they do a damn good job of getting the system quiet, by putting the components of the entire system in much better places than standard PC or even server machines. Have you heard a Mac Pro lately? whats that? you hear nothing... thats the idea. When was the last time you didn't hear a PC server?

Actually Crixx you n00b. The Mac Pro is A DESKTOP... let me spell it again D E S K T O P. Now how many ppl care how loud a desktop is??? lemme answer that EVERY OFFICE in most parts of the world. Now if you want a server, that's Xserve territory and that's a 1u with the typical noise of a server. Before you comment, know what yuh commenting bout.

thats a damn lie.

Iam sitting here with two hp 7600 desktops at my feet that are noisy as all hell, and no one even cares!!!

ridiculous amount of fans and just loud as hell components

but they dont care, why??? cause it gets their stupid oil drilling work done.

i didnt even know we where arguing about loud desktops O.o i thought yu were just taking a jab at x86 machines on teh whole.
oh well though, mac pro is quiet yayy, some librarian somewhere in the world will actually give a damn.
