For all die hard movie watchers and the like.
Who do you consider the best director in Motion Pictures.
Now for those of you who don't know who the hell these people are...I'll put some examples of their best movies conceived)

Michael Mann- Heat, Collateral, Miami Vice etc.
George Lucas- Everything associated with Star Wars and Indiana Jones
Steven Spielberg- Saving Private Ryan, Munich, Indiana Jones Trilogy, Jurassic Park etc.
Ridley Scott- Gladiator, Alien, Black Hawk Down etc.
Peter Jackson- Lord of the Rings trilogy, King Kong
Michael Bay- Bad Boys films, The Rock, Pearl Harbor etc.
Oliver Stone- JFK, Platoon, World Trade Centre, Any Given Sunday etc.
Quentin Taratino- Pulp Fiction, Resevoir Dogs, Kill Bill films etc
James Cameron- Titanic, Aliens, Terminator (1 and 2) etc.
Mel Gibson-Passion of the Christ, Braveheart

As big of a Star Wars fan as I am, I have to give it to Steven Spielberg. Almost every movie he makes is gold and they stand the test of time. His movies also cover a wide range of genres. I am sure that 50 years from now his movies will still be very watchable and entertaining.

Honorable mentions

George Lucas - I am a Star Wars fan after all
Peter Jackson - If he is only remembered for Lord of the Rings and King Kong, that is saying something
Francis Ford Coppola - The Godfather trilogy
Ridley Scott - Alien and Gladiator
Bryan Singer - Usual Suspects, X-men 1 and 2, Superman Returns, more to come
Robert Zemeckis - Back to the Future series, Forrest Gump, Cast Away

Ridley Scott only directed the first Alien

James Cameron directed Aliens
David Ficher directed Alien 3
some french Director directed Alien Resurrection
and Paul W.S. Anderson directed Alien versus Predator.

i probably gonna get flame, but i like sofia coppola (virgin suicides, lost in translation) but two movies does not a great director make..

speakin of which.. wah bout francis ford coppola ( godfather series, sleepy hollow, apocalyse now)
roman polanski ( the pianist, ninth gate, rosemary's baby )
alfred hitchcock (notorious, psycho, rebecca, to catch a theif,north by northwest)

I've gotta' vote for the weirdo....QT....
Loved Kill Bill 1 & 2, Pulp Fiction, and Jackie Brown. I also liked Dusk to Dawn, but on a much lesser level. I wanna' see the Protector too.

hah! I wish I could forget M.'s crappy movies...

I was thinkin....the title says best film director in history....that in mind Kurosawa was one of best, and is possibly MY my favorite.

ok ok I overlooked some directors...pressura..
But Brian De Palma sucks...he only made 3 good movies (Scarface, Mission: Impossible and The Untouchables) everything else he directed sucks @$$

heh, I love Sam Raimi's stuff...including the weak arse Xena and Hercules stuff....BUT, I'd never classify him as one of the best...even with Spiderman and the cult classic Army of Darkness....

I've always felt that Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi were a great duo on screen.

with its "historical accuracies" that were so forking in accurate and then yes brave heart does pwn base. but greatest director for just that?? never no way.

QT not for kill bill. its sad people might think thas his best work. pfft. resevoir dogs rocked! and all his movies like that

Peter o Fallon for Suicide kings. It almost felt like a QT movie.

george lucas was a good director.. but he sh!t up all the latest star wars movies and write a dotish script.. gosh a 14 year old could write up better love scenes , and yes constipated people may be angry but you didn't have to make anakin act constipated.
