PLAYING ON A NOTEBOOK can be such a drag. The notebook heats up like there's no tomorrow, if you run Intel's integrated graphics you have a slide-show at best and of course, battery life ends up in tears. Intel knows that many case scenarios are less than ideal for gamers, both hardcore and casual - so the company has released Laptop Gaming TDK (Thermal Development Kit), an API layer designated to give developers control over some major aspects of the notebook itself.

A relatively small download (7.6 MB) enables you to enable your code to work with such data as remaining battery power and calculations how long will the battery last, support for Wi-Fi, real-time processor utilization and many more. The API itself is divided into two parts – multi-threaded for maximum performance and single-threaded for functionality.

We have talked to several game developers and opinions differed from enthusiastic to several comments which lambasted the company. The general opinion is that CPU and platform are the ones than need to detect the application and adjust itself in order how code should be executed, not the other way around.

Two guys from FPS world and one guy from MMORPG world were quite happy with the kit, not missing to poke AMD and talk about the fact that Intel is liked by many because of its software tools. One of guys commented this tool with comparison of Intel's neighbour from Santa Clara, the eternal Graphzilla. Nvidia is famous for excellent SDKs and software utilities - with NvPerfHUD being the prime example. For those unaware, this utility monitors game engine, driver, graphics card, CPU load and help developers with optimizing the code - and those optimizations work for both nV and DAAMIT graphics cards.

In the end, it's just the question of how mucho dinero publishers need to invest in making TDK a living and breathing part of games. The market for notebook gamers is gaining on strength every day, and Intel just wants to see that games run better on its hardware.

Mark Rein would probably ad that Intel needs to make a decent graphics chip first. µ

Umm Nvintel... no Invidia? no.... intevida? umm... nintel? ..... India... wait thats a country... they cyah trademark that.... umm... nvtl.... well that would work for a wallstreet ticker... but not a name... how about Intel? because if that were to happen Nvidia would just be absorbed and would become another one of Intel's nameless, faceless products with a butterfly looking logo... oh and the green would be dropped for blue I am sure. Then of course Nvidia would lose all chipset deals with AMD which they are the majority for at present (although DAAMIT will prolly change that soon). So it would all be quite interesting. I would still prefer Nvidia-Via. They both green and I like via for being a very cost effective and innovative company.
