Sony admits utter PSN failure: your personal data has been stolen
By Ben Kuchera | Last updated about an hour ago

Sony has finally come clean about the "external intrusion" that has caused the company to take down the PlayStation Network service, and the news is almost as bad as it can possibly get. The hackers have all your personal information, although Sony is still unsure about whether your credit card data is safe. Everything else on file when it comes to your account is in the hands of the hackers.

In other words, Sony's security has failed in a spectacular fashion, and we're just now finding out about it. In both practical and PR terms, this is a worst-case scenario.
What did they get?

Here is the data that Sony is sure has been compromised if you have a PlayStation Network Account:

    * Your name
    * Your address (city, state, and zip)
    * Country
    * E-mail address
    * Birthday
    * PSN password and login name

"It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained," Sony announced. While the company claims that there is "no evidence" that credit card information has been compromised, it won't rule out the possibility.

Their advice is to be safe, rather than sorry. "If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained."
What can you do?

You are warned to keep watch over your accounts, and to be aware of your heightened risk of fraud due to the security breach. "For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of e-mail, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information," the company said. "Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information."

Sony has also provided a wealth of sources for data and protection against identity theft.

You may wish to visit the web site of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission at www.consumer.gov/idtheft or reach the FTC at 1-877-382-4357 or 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20580 for further information about how to protect yourself from identity theft. Your state Attorney General may also have advice on preventing identity theft, and you should report instances of known or suspected identity theft to law enforcement, your State Attorney General, and the FTC. For North Carolina residents, the Attorney General can be contacted at 9001 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-9001; telephone (877) 566-7226; or www.ncdoj.gov. For Maryland residents, the Attorney General can be contacted at 200 St. Paul Place, 16th Floor, Baltimore, MD 21202; telephone: (888) 743-0023; or www.oag.state.md.us.

To be fair, Sony does apologize for the inconvenience. There is still no update on when service will be restored, but that is the least of your concerns if you have a PlayStation Network account. It's time to change your passwords, at the very least, and if you're like to be completely safe it's not a bad idea to cancel your credit or debit cards and request replacements.

We'll continue to follow this story as it develops.

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/04/sony-admits-utter-psn-failure-your-personal-data-has-been-stolen.ars

Now I know the PS3 fanboys prolly half expecting the XBL ppl to point and laugh, but honestly that'd be too easy. Let's just highlight a few important points that apply to all things personal information related:
1. DO NOT USE DICTIONARY works for your PASSWORDS
2. USE STRONG passwords that are at least 8 chars long and that use NON-ALPHANUMERIC chars e.g. #$%^&*() (Where possible)
3. DO NO use the SAME PASSWORD for ALL YOUR various logins. DEFINITELY DO NOT USE the same passwords for your BANKING and EMAIL (that SHOULD BE a no brainer).
4. DO NOT store these passwords on your COMPUTER in a notepad file (in the least least NOT without ENCRYPTING the FILE) see Truecrypt
5. DO NOT give out your passwords to other users (even if they are trusted, their PRACTICES may not be)
6. Seeing as PS3 uses Nvidia remember PS3 TWIMTBP - SINGLE PLAYER (cause you pay for what you get) - sorry you KNOW i had to XD

Thanks for reposting what was posted above :P, though the added password security tips were welcome.

You should also tell your Xbox live friends that also use PSN they should change their passwords IF they happened to use the same email and password on XBL as they did on PSN.

Ouchie. Cant say I miss psn. in fact, my ps triple might as well not even be here and I wouldnt know the difference.

But it is unfortunate for those ps triple users who depend on the service to get their online multiplayer fix. I guess one of the outstanding questions is WHEN will psn be back up?

In the mean time, all ps triple users, jump on your pc, dl steam, buy bad company 2 and lewwe sweat!! I guarantee you will not go back to your ps triple!!!

The credit card info shouldn't be an issue for most ppl on this forum seeing as Sony never wanted to accept our credit cards to begin with. However for the millions otherwise this is a big epic fail on Sony's part.

They knew anonymous was gunning for them and they still left their developer network open.

Its funny this all started because Sony removed linux support from the PS3 cuz they were afraid that it might lead to ppl hacking the ps3 to run homebrew. All that happened was the hacker community went at it fiercer then ever, hacked ps3 to support homebrew and backups via usb, cfw, etc and were able to unban themselves and now bring down the PSN and access all our data. In retrospect allowing linux support was not so bad now was it Sony?

@ Ero, thats exactly right. Sony played d big bad wolf, and take way linux, and sue d hackers.
They basically asked for what happen to them. Why dey din bring d fellers in and work with them to offer official homebrew is beyond me. Ah well. I hope dey learn dey lesson.

PSN Down, U.S. Senator Responds
Connecticut's Richard Blumenthal takes Sony to task.
April 26, 2011

Obviously, the breach of Sony's PlayStation Network by hackers is a pretty big deal. As we've already reported, everything from your personal details and login information to more sensitive data like credit card numbers could be in the hands of hackers, sending gamers around the world fumbling for their credit reports.

But I bet you didn't imagine it was so serious that officials from the U.S. government would pay attention.

Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Democratic Senator from Connecticut, issued a letter to Sony about the security breach and how it was handled. Addressed to SCEA's president and CEO Jack Tretton, the letter asks some tough questions.

Senator Blumenthal -- PS3 gamer?
As IGN has already noted, Sony's lack of communication with its customers is troubling. Senator Blumenthal agrees. "I am troubled by the failure of Sony to immediately notify affected customers of the breach [of the PSN] and to extend adequate financial data security protections." He goes on to note that "a breach of such a widely used service raises concerns of data privacy, identity theft, and other misuse of sensitive personal and financial data... When a data breach occurs, it is essential that customers be immediately notified about whether and to what extent their personal and financial information has been compromised."

You can read Senator Blumenthal's full letter at his website, including the details about how he thinks those affected by the breach should have access to "credit reporting services, for two years, the costs of which... borne by Sony."

 Sounds good to us.

I find they should give everyone a US$50 credit on PSN for the snafu.

Like yuh self with some DLC

then again, Japan just got hit with that massive earthquake, so putting Sony testicles in a financial vice grip mightn't be too good for their recovering economy.

It'd cost Sony near 4 billion to do $50 credit to everyone.

Maybe if they did that for everyone that has purchased from PSN. Figure would be alot less.
Or maybe for users that have signed in in the past 3months.

Maybe 3 months free PlayStation Plus to all users and 3months extra to existing subscribers.

Something like that.

Q.16     I want my money back (subscription fee, content) since the PSN/Qriocity was not available.

When the full services are restored and the length of the outage is known, we will assess the correct course of action.

This is on the EU FAQ site.
http://faq.en.playstation.com/cgi-bin/scee_gb.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?locale=en_GB&p_faqid=5593

Pretty confident they will offer some form of compensation as Xbox Live has done it in the past and pretty much every PS Blog post is flooded with comments asking for compensation in addition to people calling in their customer service lines for compensation.

Edit- US PS.Blog has acknowledged this as well

Make every PSN user a PS+ member for a year with a 50 credit and add back ps2 emulation via software.

Thats what they should do but we'll prob get 5.00 off select titles.

Sony doesn't own us anything as according to their Terms of Service.
It would be a gesture of good will though because the general public's comments and the typical American rights to everything they have and use is something they can't ignore.

huss yuh ass, men always looking for free thing, honestly they not going to be giving out blowjobs and ham sandwiches, the most any non PSN+ user will receive is probably a free theme. I understand you are affected by the loss of a "free" service, and yes it's in quotes because it is a free service, no matter how much you paid for your ps3 or games. It's a service they provide and their only obligation they have is an ethical one, so please stop all this bitching and moaning about what they owe me. If yall really want to get something done go to your nearest mp and get them to fix some real world shit, go to TATT and get them to do their job, light a bag of shit at every tstt/bmobile store fcuk it do it to digicel also the f'ing up also.

It doesnt matter if its *Free* or not, it is something included when u buy the PS3.
It is used to market and drive sales of d unit. Some men bought PS3s solely for online play.
Imagine blizzard discontinue battle net and say, o it was free, dey have to give back EVERY STARCRAFT 2 player, dey MONEY!, i not paying for battle net, but i pay for SC2, yes it have SP, but blizzard could watch me and say, dey discontinue MP, and i have to suck salt, and dey eh give me nothing?

Slaming and Wintry get real eh. Sony offered a serice as part of there PS3 Console. And dey SHOULD compensate ppl for it. Weather money, weather free content, weather what. Is sony blunder, d right thing to do , is try to make gamers happy. After this fiasco, men will done find it hard to trust sony already, yes , sorry to say, but they owe eacha nd every PS3 owner, ALOT!!!!!!!!!!!, if dey plan on gettin anybody money again in d future.

And every person who complaing, an bitching, and moaning, HAVE EVERY RIGHT TOO!
ESPECIALY! how RETARDED sony is dealing with d entire matter.

correct is right... as if men buy Blk Ops to play single player... they bought it to play multiplayer which is provided through PSN,
the system and Games are marketed and sold for multiplayer support.

i think allyuh letting the fact that XBL not free tie allyuh head up a lil bit yes....

As said earlier, Sony is not legally bound to compensate anyone BUT can do so on good will.

Obviously compensation would be nice. If we don't get anything then it'll just hurt Sony in the long-run. If we do get something then it'll help alleviate the flak Sony has been getting.

I for one personally don't care for compensation. I just wanna get back online when the network is up.
It's all up to Sony. A gesture of good will? Or negative press when PSN is back up.

And I repeat that Sony has acknowledged that they are considering some form of compensation.
