The PlayStation 3 console has broken UK sales records with more than 165,000 machines sold in the first two days of release, say analysts Chart Track.

More than a million consoles were shipped across Europe on launch day last week with 600,000 sold.

Sony is hoping to retake its title as the console market leader, as Microsoft and Nintendo head the next-gen race.

Meanwhile, games firm Namco Bandai has said it is to use the PS3's Cell chip in arcade machines.

Microsoft sold 71,000 Xbox 360 consoles during its UK launch weekend, while Nintendo sold 105,000 Wii machines.

But both companies offered limited stock to retailers, which led to shortages.

Ray Maguire, managing director of Sony Computer Entertainment UK said the figures were a vote of confidence in the machine.

"Having broken the record for launch sales, we are now replenishing retail stock across the country," he said,

The first arcade title to use the PS3 microprocessor will be fighting game Tekken 6, Namco said.

While PlayStation technology has been used in arcade machines in the past it is believed to be the first time that the Cell will be used for games not running on Sony's console.

Namco Bandai has sold its PlayStation 2 arcade technology to other firms, but it is still undecided about whether to sell its PS3 Cell-based technology, a spokeswoman for the firm said.

Now if they had done that from the start they would have been in a better position. I see that some of the availability issues have been ironed out Amazon actually have PS3s in stock right now at cost price but supprisingly they themselves not selling the Wii

I read this article and thought it was really well done. It is by the Chief Creative Officer of Insomniac Games (creators of Ratchet and Clank). I have to admit that I agree with most of his points mainly because he goes into great detail when explaining them. The title should at least get you interested:

I read that article on gamespot and i liked what he had to say, not as a Ps3 or sony fanboy but as a consumer. Especialy the part were he said the wii is just a fad and will die out in a year's time, i mean yeah the wii appeals to the non gamers but how much of them will  buy new games 6months down the line or how many will get fed up and pack it away in the back of the closet next to the Ab master and the yoga matt :P .
But i digress game developers like inovation but at the same time they like making their games look as good as they imagine it and unless the wii has some hidden graphical prowess hidden away we'll see where wii stand a year from now (pun intended) when all the really big games come out . I mean the MGS4 and Gt5, Unreal 3and Killzone2 not to mention when 360 gets Gears of war2 and Halo 3.

Agreed, but you have to admit the man made his points clearly and without the kind of blind fanboy loyalty you see from forum posters. As a 360 owner, he made me think seriously about getting a PS3 in the future (1-2 years).

I actually didn't read the articles, but I figured they would as many do, have merit. The argument of whether I will buy a PS3 in future is pretty up in the air, but I will lean towards NO cause to begin with I wasn't willing to buy the Xbox 360 even, it was bought FOR me. Quite frankly I have better things in life to spend my money on now (as I not getting younger) and 600USD is too much to swallow, heck 350USd is alot to swallow so whaev. I do believe as i've said before, that the PS3 will eventually begin to do well as the 360 is doing well. I disagree that the Wii is a throwaway console, but hey thats just mho. I could really care less about who wins to be honest, but I will chook a lil 2c now and again when i read the good and bad of all consoles.

wii isnt a throw away console what the guy is saying eventually Wii wont be the new and attractive console it is and when the hype dies down it wont be selling no wear near as many consoles or games as it is now.

Just yesterday, gaming blog Kotaku sniffed around the internet for some recent FCC filings, and came up with a request submitted by Sony pertaining to a pair of recent BlueTooth modifications for the PS3.

However, of more pertinent interest to the gaming industry as a whole is the text at the very end, which references the addition of a new PS3 model. This new model, which has a product code of CECHE01, is purported to contain an 80 GB hard drive. According to the filing, the 60 GB model (CECHA01) is listed as the "Original Model" while the 80 GB model (CECHE01) is listed as the "Addition Model".

This news has led analysts to assume one of two possibilities: Sony is either attempting to replace the 60GB model with the new 80 GB model, or they're planning on the simultaneous release of 3 different PS3 units, much in the same way that Microsoft plans to concurrently sell the Core, Premium, and Elite versions of the Xbox 360.

In an update to the story today, Kotaku has published an official response from Sony regarding the recent filing:

Quote
"As mentioned when we made the product announcement for PS3, the system will have different configurations (thus, 60GB HDD with memory card slots and Wi-Fi and 20GB HDD without memory card slots or Wi-Fi both exists). Application to the FCC has been made with various possibilities in mind, however, it does not lead to a new product announcement at this time."

Strong words.

Update:
Quote
PS3 sales down 80 per cent in week two

Blue raygun fired

By INQUIRER newsdesk: Wednesday 04 April 2007, 10:36

SALES OF THE Sony PlayStation 3 dropped off by a gargantuan 80 per cent in the second week of availability, according to industry watchers ChartTrack.

Whilst Sony reported better-than-expected sales of 165,000 consoles in the first week on sale - including the 100 or so chaps that got free tellies at the London launch - second week sales were in the region of 33,000 consoles, which is, well, a pretty significant drop off.

Sales of PS3 games also fell by 60 per cent, despite a number of hot new releases hitting the shelves, including Virtua Fighter 5 and Virtua Tennis 3.

Sony shipped 220,000 (ish) consoles to British shores for the PS3 launch, meaning that there is plentiful stock available for anyone who wants to snap one up. There are even websites that have been keeping track of the ample supply in a bid to discourage any notion that PS3 may have 'sold out'.

With that said, sales of the Casino Royale Blu-ray disc have put it at the most popular HD disc ever shipped on either format, marking something of a milestone.

Whilst there are no official figures available, we rather suspect that the DVD release did about 100x better, but that's not to take away from the fact that, no doubt, almost every Casino Royale B-R buyer must have been a PS3 owner.

With purchasing power like that, Sony's move to put the drive in the PS3 could yet be vindicated. µ

Sony woes continue. I really believe the key to Sony winning (or at least a respectable percentage of units sold) is to establish blu-ray as the dominant format first.

And that is exactly what they're doing...

By pushing the Blu-Ray feature with the PS3, they have begun to outsell HD-DVD at a ratio of 3:1.

Over the next few months or year....its most likely now that HD-DVD will be phased out...

And then at that point Sony will push the games on the PS3....and other features like Linux on PS3... etc...

Fans and critics alike are continuing to second-guess Sony's decision to release two separate models of the PS3 as more and more information suggests the possibility that the much-bemoaned 20 GB model will soon be completely phased out. Last month, sources at Best Buy reported that the mass market retail chain will no longer be carrying the low-end model, and will instead sell only the high-end 60 GB PS3.

But now, even Sony's official retail outlet, Sony Style, no longer offers the 20 GB PS3 as an alternative. According to their website, the $600 60 GB model is the only type of PlayStation 3 available for purchase on their online store.

Gaming blog Joystiq recently contacted both the website and one of its walk-in stores to confirm the information, and both retailers claimed that there are simply none in stock.

"We haven't gotten those [20 GB] models in for a long time," an anonymous sales representative from a Sony Style walk-in store confirmed. "We have plenty of 60 gig models in stock."

A rep from SonyStyle.com offered similar information, stating that it's been a month since the last 20 GB PS3 was in stock. The rep later suggested that gamers wishing to purchase the machine seek the help of a third party retailer.

As of now, Sony still has not yet made an official announcement regarding the status of the 20 GB PS3. However, in a previous statement made by Sony's Dave Karraker last month, the company is still manufacturing 20 GB models, albeit at a much reduced rate. Due to the model's low demand, Karraker stated that approximately 20% of manufactured PS3s contain 20 GB hard drives.

so we should expect a price drop for the 60 gig model right, as the new 80 gig model is released.

Ok i thought you knew this already but the 20Gig ps3 has stopped producing due to the fact that production costs are near the same. The 60gig ps3 is said to be dropped by $100 later this year.

Also, keep in mind that companies may look to release dual format players for both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. I don't think this war is quite over yet.

did Sony confirm that price cut? because considering that they have 2 supposed killer apps coming later this year it would make poor marketign sense to drop the price when the strength of Lair and MGS4 should boost their sales.

And just for the record, Sony isn ot pushing Blu-Ray with the PS3, they are pushing the PS3 with Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray may very well come out on top of the format war since they seem to have the upperh and in terms of support, but HD-DVD will not be phased out as you put it "Over the next few months or year...." they guys behind HD-DVD will at least try to break even and possibly turn a small profit, and that will not take place in a few months.
SONY didnt confirm it this was said by one of those big companies Best Buy or Circuit City cant remember which but they said that sony has stopped producing 20gig and intends to drop price of ps3 by $100 later this year. I think the only thing we can assume is 100% correct is the production stop as a big company would know when they order them. As for the price drop we can only hope they are right.

There just MAY be a drop...

but in my opinion..it will be a bad corporate decision...

but would be a longterm good decision as more ps3's will get sold = more software income and blu-ray sales...

The ps2 sold most consoles when it came out because at the time it was a cheap dvd player ive never seen a blue ray dvd player is the ps3 a cheap blue ray player ? im guessing at $600 it isnt but if they drop the price it would be using the same strategy as ps2 and sell many consoles and work on games later
