Sony execs talk PlayStation Move expectations, PS4 details

The PlayStation Move is now less than a month from hitting stores shelves, and it looks like some Sony execs are already busy starting to manage expectations. Speaking with Eurogamer this week, Sony Computer Entertainment senior vice president Ray Maguire chose to compare the Move's launch to that of the EyeToy  for the PlayStation 2, saying that "exactly as with EyeToy in the PS2 days, it's a product that needs to be sampled. You need to get your hands on it. You need to understand it. You need to try it." Maguire further went on to say he's "not particularly" expecting "massive" day one sales, but that he expects sales to grow as word of mouth spreads. In other PlayStation news, Sony's Kaz Hirai seems to have effectively ruled out a download-only future for the eventual PS4 in an interview with MCV, with him saying that a "digital future is over ten years away." Hirai then went on to note that "we do business in parts of the world where network infrastructure isn't as robust as one would hope," and that "here's always going to be requirement for a business of our size and scope to have a physical medium." No word if that also applies to Sony's future handhelds as well.

I have absolutely no problems with 'physical mediums' for consoles.  This dependence on 'download only' some
people seem to want to tout wholeheartedly is all well and good when you live in a country whose ISPs could
provide fibre-optic to your house.  I don't intend to move to one of those countries.  I love my T&T, as backward
as it could be sometimes.

Gimme my game discs please.  Thank you very much.

well if it's a download only console then you couldn't sell your old games to buy new ones....right? So i don't think people will buy in to such a console cuz that's a major drawback imo.

Funny you mention that, was too lazy to post this article earlier but more publishers will be charging used games for access to online components...

http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/sony-considers-charging-for-used-games-that-play-online/

Sony is considering a charge for online gamers that purchased their games second hand.

When EA first announced that it would begin to charge $10 for gamers that bought their titles used and attempted to play online, it apparently started something that may now become the future of online gaming- at least as far as used games go.

It is no secret that publishers don’t like the flourishing second-hand game market. They see little to no benefit from the sales, and many publishers believe that it is hurting both the industry in general, and their bottom line specifically. In order to combat that and attempt to recoup some of the profit from the second sale, EA announced their plan to charge for online access of used games. THQ and Ubisoft both soon followed suit.  No word yet on whether or not other publishers will follow, but odds are that they will.

The newest company to consider charging used game buyers to play online is Sony, who told Gamesindustry.biz that it not only supports publishers plans to charge for second-hand games through online play, but it is looking into it for its own first-party titles.

“On the principle of making online portions of the game available or unlocked from the disc-based release for a fee, we’re broadly supportive of that.” Andrew House, Sony’s European president said.

The movement to charge additional fees online has caught on so fiercely that Activision CEO Bobby Kotick is said to be considering adding a subscription model to future Call of Duty games. At the moment that seems like just an idea rather than a plan, but it does show a growing trend in thought, but many- including Sony- are hesitant to go that far.

“In terms of just a charge for basic online play, that’s something that we have to talk about a lot more and we struggle with a little bit because we feel very vindicated and base a lot of the success of PSN today – a 70 per cent connection rate across consoles – on the fact that we’ve removed that major initial barrier to entry.” House said.

Not an issue for buyers like myself, that buy most games new, but I know quite a few people who almost exclusively buy used games months after release to save a lil coin.  With this added 'fee' that is now being proposed, they might very well be better off buying a new copy at reduced price instead.

Lending out and trading might soon be a thing of the past.

I think the used games market will continue to exist with used games prices fallin by an average of $5 to $10 USD to compensate for these additional fees. There is still value in the single player campaign for these games especially for those that don't pirate their games.

I will be getting the move and the Sports game for sure. I will also get the DC Universe Online. Depending on how good it is will be how long I subscribe. I just played the Vanquish demo and I definitely getting that, it like a Japanese Gears of War.
