Undertakers remove the body of juice manufacturer Marlon Gustav from the side of Wrightson Road in Port-of-Spain on Wednesday night. Gustav was shot to death by a Glencoe businessman after he attacked him with a rock.

ROAD RAGE on Wrightson Road, Port-of-Spain, led to the killing of a juice manufacturer who police said came out of his panel van and struck a Glencoe businessman with a rock on Wednesday night.

The 47-year-old businessmen, police said, retaliated and shot Tacarigua entrepreneur Marlon Gustav once in the chest with his licensed firearm.

No charges were laid up to late yesterday.

Police said Gustav, who operated Johnny’s Fruit Drinks, lived on Fourth Street, Dinsley Gardens.

He sold and distributed home-made fruit juices to several supermarkets, they said.

Gustav had accused the businessman of giving him a “bad drive” on the westbound lane of Beetham Highway, in Sea Lots, Port-of-Spain, shortly before 7 pm, investigators said.

The journey turned fatal when the businessman, who drove a Nissan Frontier, stopped at the traffic lights on Wrightson Road Extension, near the Jean Pierre Sports Complex, they said.

Gustav also stopped at the intersection verbally abusing the businessman. He then came out of his van, picked up “a big stone” and struck the businessman on the right shoulder, police said.

The businessman had been sitting in his van.

The police said Gustav was about to strike a second time, when the businessman drew his licensed firearm and fired a single shot. It struck Gustav in the chest.

Gustav was able to run back to his van but he collapsed and died.

POLICE WITNESS

Detectives said a police inspector from the Guard and Emergency Branch, who had also stopped at the Wrightson Road intersection, witnessed the incident. That officer was in a car just behind Gustav’s van.

The businessman was taken to the West Shore Medical Centre, in Cocorite, for injuries he sustained from the boulder.

He was later discharged from the hospital and was assisting investigators with their probe up to late yesterday.

Police said the businessman told them he was unaware of any “bad drive.”

Relatives of the dead man yesterday refused to comment.

self defence? still though he could've fired the shot in the air but then again is trinidad we lving and the dude did attack him. I'll be honest i wasn't waiting for the stone to hit me before i drew my fire arm. I guess in this situation there is no win win.

mixed feelings is right, on one hand yuh have to understand a businessman today cannot afford to laps, he prob got the gun just for a situation like this, where he might be a target of a kidnapping. i mean really, a panel van and an man heckling you and following you, sh1t i woulda be scared like whoa. and like cross i might have drawn the gun, and displayed it, let the man know i not going and go easy.

I never see a police higher than a "corporal" get directly involved in any incident.. he must be just called the nearst station like anyone else and only get a fast response cause he is an "Inspector".

Probably didn't want his pale green or pale brown or whatever-bland-colour uniform he had one dirty... if this thing didn't turn fatal he may simply gone his way.
