The cost per laptop  was over $600 USD, supposedly due to all the extra software that was put on. Also the Lojack and the case added on some cost. That price is still way too high though. The basic HP 425 Laptop selling for $549.

That is nearly 3 times the price. $5k was pushing it to begin with, now 15k? I dont expect them to buy i5 and i7 laptops for the children. Quite frankly, the specs are more than adequate to perform the tasks for which they are intended. But how on earth such lowly specs could end up costing $15k?? Somebody (or bodies) pockets getting reallll line. I wouldnt ah mind if I was getting in on the action at all na but wayysssss.

They could do this, build tunnel to Mayaro but they cah do nun bout people who $$ jumping up in Clico. Them big boys living nice and the poor people who invest in the company money practically inaccessible. This world eh fair at allll.

And I wondering too what kind of software they putting on so. Maybe Sax could shed some light. But a couple programs and lojack could NEVER TRIPLE the price.

Yeah and remember they said they got a bess price on the laptops from HP, imagine what the cost would look like if they paid regular price? It would be very interesting to see the retail price vs the "special" price they got.

Hmmnever really took on Lojack, looks like a service that could help. Though as with everything else nothing is perfect.

Old article from 2005

http://www.forbes.com/2005/08/19/digilife-lojack-laotops-cx_daa_0819digilife.html

Quote
plunk down $49.95 (or $99 for three years of protection), and you go home with the program on a compact disc. (There are absolute hopes to add more retailers later this year.) Load it onto your laptop, and it dials into a computer in Vancouver, it logs you on, registers your computer's serial number and who you are along with a password. Then, you sit back and wait for it to be stolen.

If that happens, that's when the "recovery team" kicks into action. Those are the go-to people. If your computer does walk out of your office, hotel room or the trunk of your car, you simply call the 800-number, or go to another computer, and report it stolen. Within seconds, your computer goes on Absolute Software's "most wanted" list.

It works like a charm, as soon as the bandits use your stolen laptop to go online. By the way, all the time your computer's been sitting in your office or den, it has been regularly checking in with its master in Vancouver. If the computer gets into the wrong hands and is reported stolen, Absolute's recovery team will see that status pop up on their screen.

Within seconds, Absolute can use one of three ways to determine where the wayward computer has gone. If it's a dial-up modem, it can tell what phone number the computer is using to get online, and trace the address. If it's broadband, it can track the IP address and then, with cooperation from the Internet Service Provider, locate the street address where the IP is installed. And then there's a third way that even John Livingston, Absolute's chairman and CEO won't tell us about.

Once the computer's been located, the recovery team--all ex-cops, by the way, most of them from the Vancouver police--call local law enforcement and tell them where they can find the purloined device.

"At the beginning, we wondered whether law enforcement would really care about laptops," Livingston confessed. "But they were very supportive. Property theft is a situation where they don't get a lot of success. But this is stolen property with a built-in electronic tip where it's located. They also realized that, in 5% of the cases, the location they go to other criminal activity is taking place."

Quote
This is also one tough little piece of software. LoJack for Laptops--Absolute licensed the Lojack name from the car theft recovery company--can survive the entire stripping and reformatting of the hard disk. And, to make it even more invulnerable, most of the big laptop makers--IBM/Lenovo  (nyse: IBM -  news  -  people ), Dell  (nasdaq: DELL -  news  -  people ), Hewlett-Packard  (nyse: HPQ -  news  -  people ) and Gateway  (nyse: GTW -  news  -  people )--have just begun embedding a recovery chip on their system boards, so that even if the thief replaces the hard drive, the computer will still be able to make that SOS call.

Sounds a little like Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Terminator. You can almost hear the computer growling, "I'll be baaaack."

Which is where a few little concerns come in.

First, the software does live on your computer pretty much forever. You can "uninstall" the software, but I had to wonder whether it really goes away. Second, it turns out that the folks in Vancouver can, only on your instructions of course, wipe the hard disk or any of the data or software on it when you report the computer stolen. Now that's great, if you don't want your last five years' tax returns falling into the hands of a greedy whistle-blower. But, despite Livingstone's assurances, I was a little worried about just how much Tania in Absolute's recovery department was able to see on my hard drive back there in Vancouver.

"It's between $12,000 to $15,000 by virtue of the signature applications infused in it alone," he said while speaking to more than 100 form one pupils at the Lakshmi Girls' Hindu College in St Augustine during the formal laptop distribution ceremony.
The People's Partnership Government has entered into an $83 million contract with Hewlett Packard (HP) for the provision of laptops for more than 17,000 form one students in keeping with their campaign promise to give each successful SEA pupil a laptop.

I dunno about allyuh but that doesn't say it cost them $15,000 per laptop to me, more like the implied value of the "specialist apps" installed.

Also notice that the contract value has not changed (yet?). Seems like sensationalized reporting to me.

Sax whats this specialised software they installed ?

They listed them on the news the other day, they were bigging up Office 2010 and several educational programs.

http://newsday.co.tt/news/0,128286.html

Quote
The laptops were outfitted with faster processing speeds, improved wireless capability, Bluetooth (wireless) connectivity, larger internal storage, faster hard drive speed, extended battery life, Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 and Learning Essentials 2.0 for Microsoft Office.

When calculated, the average cost of one laptop worked out to be $4,068.

Please remember that the ministry is paying warranty for 3 years, this even includes fall and spill damage. It's quite possible that they also included in the price all the services required to get them prepped and out.

I remember that qoute from the pres conference....it sickens me to no end...

I really didnt give them a thorough check due to the pressure I was under, but I saw McAfee antivirus, MS Office home and Student 2010, some Microsoft Learning software ("Digital Lifesyte" or something so)

I still can't understand why a 6lb laptop has no DVD-ROM...
God is dead.

i have one of d best netbooks available, Asus U30JC, i have ah 40gb sdd for OS, and a 320GB for storage (subverted dvd rom for more hd). 4GB ram, i3 CPU. 13" Screen.
I using this sucker to go by all my clients, and to do some heavy photoshop / flash / vmware. I pay 950$USD for d entire package.

Now tell me, what a form 1 student want, with anything costing more dan 300$
Stueps.

And d government gets software from microsoft FREE! (I KNOW), and mcafee software is cheap, 60US for 5 machines FULL COMPLETE protection suite, for 3 years, dats what, 12US ah machine? :S

Big Wet Watery STUEPS! and if u buying laptop in bulk from HP, ure ah government Body, buying d laptops for educational purposes, u have to be gettin them thing for next to nothing.

All that said, ill post these 2 links, another thing added to d seemingly increasing list, of "brilliant" decisions made by this landslide elected government.

I still say that laptops on the whole were not necessary. Money should have been spent equipping every single school in this country with proper computer labs. This would have been cheaper and also would have benefited the entire school and not just the incoming Form 1 class. It'll take several years and a few hundred million to ensure that all secondary school kids have laptops.

Ah well it is already done, hope that these machines work well and are indeed utilized for educational purposes.
