I had the rare privilege of seeing my best friend give birth to her son yesterday in a birth centre. Even saw the placenta!!

*snckers as several GATT members now puke at this point...*

Another PC Repair Horror Story:

Today I got a call from a good customer of mine to look at a report of their PC not starting up. When I power it on i see the POST sow funny and after that I get a corrupt file. Open case to inspect RAM and saw what had to be the MOST amount of dust I EVER saw on a computer part. Dust till it make lil mountains that start from the PCB and rise above the height of the RAM chips. I also noticed some black areas that looked like moisture.

Show the guy and tell him he needs new RAM, but these days DDR1 RAM is hard to get (except at A1 in Aranguez) He confirms. I decide to go clean out the PC

I took it outside and began to disassemble. If you see DUST. Everywhere you can find it. in my cleaning I did notice there was more of the strange moisture on the TV card and even corrosion on the PCI contacts. It was at that point the guy mention this:

"There was a rat in the room last week."

O_O

I now take a closer look at the case, and to my horror, I see RAT DROPPINGS AND DRIED URINE on the floor of the case. By this time I had long removed the motherboard and dusted it out, eh!! Rat pee under the mother board, most likely on the RAM I was handling and god knows what else! The rat got inside the case via the unblocked PCI slots in the back of the case, plus it was on the floor in a dusty area.

I trip one time. After seeing the advice of 2 other techies, I tell the guy I not working on the case due to the health hazard. New system for you. At least his boss agreed and say to organise forthwith.

I did salvage the DVD-RW, HDD and Floppy, everything else was condemned forthwith. I DID find fresh rat sh1t on the HDD itself. Being a 200GB drive, I opted to clean it with dish washing liquid.

I must have washed my hands from fingers to elbow about 6 times between discovery and leaving the place.

Sigh.. I had to call off my other appointments due out health concerns and hard directly for home. Sanitize with methyl spirit one time.

Any ideas on how to "sanitize" the optical/hard drives I took?

And what is Lepto Spirosis? (which the guy even knew about)

- Deposting Republic Bank Cheques in to a Rebublc Bank account, only to be told that they'll STILL take 3 workings days to clear because the home branch of the cheque issuer and my home branch is not the same. I never encounter such foolishness at RBTT: and RBTT cheque into an RBTT account usually clears withing minutes...
