Well you guys know how 'nice' I have it with customers:

Wednesday last. 1pm: Have a huge load of work to do. currently fixing a computer for a customer who needs it the same day.

1:03pm get a call from a customer saying a computer not working, come quick. I explain that I have too much work to do down to come today, but I can come first thing int he morning.

1:15pm the user of said computer form same organization calls insisting that I come. Grudgingly, and after deciding how best I could rearrange my schedule, I agree to come between 3 and 4pm.

3:30pm I arrive at said location to assess the situation: Hard drive 'no longer agrees' with computer, a Dell dimension 4400. Recommend a new hard drive. I quote hard drive at $400 an labour at $300.

This woman go look to try to beat me down to $200 for labour! I had to all but shout that I had to abandon another job (yes! I was in the middle of fixing someone else's computer when I get the call!) and start walking out the office with half intent to leave the place before they would agree to my fee. They didn't even get charged extra for rush service! As a result of this delay, my other jobs were never finished till midnight that night, plus I missed out on an evening rendezvous with a nice chick...

I'll tell all the computer techies on GATT here and now: Nationals of India are BAD customers to have. I'm sorry. If your customer tells you he/she is from Inida, avoid doing business them like the plague. They'll try to beat you down to the lowest price possible. Stand firm to their challenges. Don't make the mistakes I've made.

If your customer tells you he/she is from Inida, avoid doing business them like the plague. They'll try to beat you down to the lowest price possible. Stand firm to their challenges. Don't make the mistakes I've made.

Reminds me of a certain client that needed his system done over. I went thru the process of backing up his data and was now in the process of installing the OS. When I was going thru the cost of doing everything, he insisted I do everything for free. having said that, I just simply let windows install and left it as it was (windows xp ont he system, no drivers etc) Up to this day, he insists that I come over and finish the job. Everytime I mention involving police, always backs down, but insists I finish the job for free.

I seriously don't know why an Embassy, out of all things, would raise such a stink about a $300 service charge. If that is the cost of doing the work, then bear with it. I'm sure if the situation was reversed, they'd be more than happy to beat you to the ground if you even thought of negotiating a lower fee.

Pablo, the Embassy of said country is my customer.

In the earlies, admittedly, things were nice,  but of all the nationals of that country (Diplomats, I think we call them) who currently work there who asked me to come to their home to do work, only TWO of 6 ever did pay out of their own pocket: a low-ranked officer and the Ambassador himself. A 3rd gave me his cellphone he didn't need.

These people have disgusted me short of saying don't ever call me again. They're disorganised and think they know it all. When I came to see the computer I had to fix, someone had already tried to re-do windows themselves without success. Any price I charge is a fight down. I hoping they go back to their home country soon and their replacements are better people...

Pablo, what would be your reaction when one of them asks you to come to you house and when you do the jobs, prepare and hand him the invoice, he tells you this:

"I will not pay this labour charge; I will find work for you at the High Commission."

this particular guy took a year and a half to pay for the part and still short paid me. I nearly ripped up the cheque and threw it in his face when I saw the figure.

Another one, the 2nd in Command, call and harasses me on a Sunday morning to come to fix his Blink service, which was determined to be the fault of TSTT, which I can do nothing about. I was lucky to borrow a car to get there, else I'd have been walking for more than half hour in hot sun to get to his house. He didn't pay either. It should have been the easiest overtime/sunday charge to make.

Another national of that country, a DOCTOR, make me come Sangre Grande and then tell me TT$250 is too much to backup his data and do a OS recovery.

I'm sorry Pablo, maybe the ones you met are good ones. And yes there is one "principled" staff member there from that country who I relate to well and is aware of the nonsense that goes on there. But they all stink in my book. As for your non-paying friend, I'd write him a letter with (CC: to Inspector in charge of Police Station nearest to where he lives) advising him of his failure to pay for services rendered and that work will not be finished until such time as the priced you quoted him is first paid in full.

@ NEO: Thanks for the support. I mean, I dunno what the computer repair market is like in that contry. Maybe it is dirt cheap to get your PC fixed in some other countries. But at the end of the day, as a foreigner, you live and work in Trinidad and Tobago. Pay the prices charged in Trinidad and Tobago.

All this being said, I am sending via courier a letter directly to the Ambassador on the matter along with a formal listing of my rates and policies. Let them challenge that!! Next time they challenge my fees, I'll just tell them call someone else and walk out of there.

$150.00?? THAT IS TOO CHEAEP SAX! GEEZUS! You should be making at least $ 600 TT an hour for your services.... They hadda be making more than $ 10,000 TT a month, I make twice that a month in the US...Tech services are beyond dirt cheap and people still complaining...LORD! You should see the IT bills that I approve every fricking month from the IT Consulting firm that does general maintenance, which is 1 visit per month. $ 1500.00 for the one day visit....Things ROUGH!

WTMC @ this thing I found out about my Nokia 6230.
Apparently, if you have a Nokia, you can dial 112 (even if the phone is locked or has no SIM card) and get patched through to the Emergency Hotline! This might come in very handy sometime. I called the number and instantly got through to 999. That's awesome.
