looks s3xy.. but i'm sure it costing an arm.. a leg and a few other appendages , and in the end, a quad core kentsfield will pwn it...

trinis brother prowl has been trying to convince me for the past couple days that the conroe equiv of this board winny is talkin bout is worth the buy...

the board is gonna cost upwards of 400 us and he plans to throw in a 6700 and multiple graphx cards and when kents field comes out hes gonna throw in a kents field.

ill get the website, but the net @ work is being really slow since yesterday so i cant surf, but i can doggie paddle.

@ Trinithemc
Note kentfield eh? we don't know what the performance of kentfield is but my priliminary reading is less than 2xDual core Xeon... prolly has to do with that antiquated FSB. But anyways.

@Crixx
Yuh sure conroe will work in that mobo? I haven't seen multi-socket standard PC CPU systems since that celeron server that overclocked like mad in the early 586 days. I am sure to run that multi-socket board you need At LEAST Xeons or Dual core Xeons so we talking Xeon 5050 and up... yuh might want to factor that in BEFORE yuh pay 400USD for a mobo only to realize yuh need a 500+ USD CPU to put inside...

i not mad in my @$$ like trini brother to buy that board but yes it works with conroe

if my net was working normal today i woulda get the link and stuff.
And one of those super ocers that work for the board manufacturer also got his hands on an early kentfield and i dont know where yu got yur results from, but HIS results were freaking astounding!!

i believe it was 12k + on 3d mark 2006 cpu score which i understand to be a ridiculous score for a cpu on that test

That's because he OCed it to 4.6GHz crixx using Nitrogen. I talking clock for clock performance with its dual socket brother. It's only logical that the quad core Kentfielf might suffer lower performance than a Dual socket dual-core rig because the dual socket mobo has DUAL independent FSBes. Whilst Kentfield is 4 cores fighting for a 1333MHz FSB. Think about it? 2 dual core Xeons EACH with a 1066FSB so kinda like 2122MHz FSB. What will be better OBVIOUSLY is A SINGLE quad core vs a dual core. ONE more thing, that 'magic' dual socket intel mobo will almost most likely run FBDIMMS... ADD THAT TO UR COST TOO and your POWER consumption. I assure you, the opteron option will be more economical and performance wise prolly just as good. Conroe beats Athlon64, but Opteron pwnz the server market. The conroe variant of Xeon will do VERY well, in 1 and prolly 2way however 4 way is PWNED by AMD hands down and 8 way... well take an educated guess.

Kentsfield will be fine on intel's bus , it has 4mb of cache per dual core , 8mb in all , so most of the instructions will be held on the core itself and it will not have to access the bus often...
Also , Core 2 as it is doesn't need much more memory bandwidth than DDR400 to operate at solid speed, anandtech did benches with the ASrock board running DDR400 vs DDR2, the performance gain is minimal, so the intel bus STILL has alot of headroom , enough for quad cores.

http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2813

But once you crank it up to an 8 way or 16 way system , AMD will take back the lead.

Umm Trini... AMD pwnz the 4 way and the 8 way... its the 1&2 way intel is now pwning.... question... how do you run DDR400 and DDR2 on teh same mobo? do you mean DDR2 400MHz? vs. say DDR2 800MHz?

shame wintry... you forget what the Asrock board can do?  http://www.asrock.com/product/775Dual-VSTA.htm

shame shame  shame....  and if you look at Kentsfield benchmarks at www.xtremesystems.org , its exactly double what a Core 2 at the same clock scores , intel will take away 4 way very soon once kent launches , 999 for a 2.66ghz quad core...
Conroe support isnt' a chipset problem , its the voltage regulator , most P4 775 1066mhz chipsets will work with it if the board has the right voltage regulator..

Dread the only Kentsfield I saw was 1 OCed to 4.3GHz... not exactly stock dude. As for the DDR/DDR2 mobos I know about them, I just was too lazy to read the attached sites and was wondering what THEY used to perform the bench. We'll see exactly how well kentsfield do when it arrives.

Just to re-iterate my point about the 4way and 8 way market:
Quote
There is no doubt that in the single and dual socket processor space that Intel now sells the best performing chips available. But in the four and eight socket market segment the laurels still belong to AMD. It's very hard to compete against a platform that delivers near linear scaling - at least up to four sockets. Intel still has a lot of work to do before it can claim that it's Core technology really does leave its AMD64 counterpart eating dust. I don't see that happening anytime soon.

The respected Johan De Gelas said in his June Anandtech review about the chip giant's Woodcrest based Xeon processor: "And what about AMD? The Opteron remains a powerful architecture with a flexible platform. It is quickly becoming the most popular platform for 4 sockets and the upcoming Tulsa CPU is most likely not going to change that."

Sun last month launched the first 16-way x64 server in a single 4U chassis - eight sockets using Opteron dual-core devices. Now that's serious computing horse power. That server has already set four benchmark records. It's no wonder that Intel's quad core chips have been pulled in for launch this year instead of next. The chip giant must really be feeling the heat in the high-end x86 space.

Clovertown @ stock speed on an es chip, intels answer to 4x4.

Kentsfield is quad core conroe and scales almost linearly.
