I know of the OCing potential, but as Baego was pointing out earlier there are games that may detect the default clock speed and not function properly, and he also mentioned that was DESPITE OCing. So what about that conundrum? Imagine Crysis is 1 a dem games.... dat game so bad if yuh get blank like that yuh go HAFFEE buy a 2.4 or thereabouts... I mean come on 300 ain't bad.

getting a 6700 or a 6600 will serve yu just fine at stock speed
its faster than a fx 62 @ stock and @ oc yu will be more than happy with sufficient passive cooling

Then we'll be in the era where clock doesn't matter as P4 long gone..   the dual core e6300 will rape any pentium D and most Athlon X2s on stock clocks... It won't be a big deal.. the companies just need to make a notepad file with profiles for all the mainstream CPUs... HL2 had one for graphics , it would even work with a 7 year old TNT 2 32mb card ...

Or they could uise  a small app to bench the CPU speed.. will only take up like 20 kilobytes and lots of them are available open source , FEAR has a built in benchmark tool that optimizes your settings, considering even if someone has a good CPU and has a system bogged down with spyware , bloatware  etc. ( though i'd like to see how much it would take to slow down a dual core ) it won't run as fast..

but if they just lazy its a simple matter to get around it.. a crack.. go into the .ini file and change settings manually... and games won't really be CPU demanding till 2008  , a 3ghz p4  / 2 ghz AMD will cut it til then...

Saving the 150US cash difference between the E6300  and E6600 is worth a 5 minutes hacking to get maxed out settings.. that chip was going for 400 us just now.

Well time will tell. I am not big on OCing lately even though most modern (read 64-bit) cpus do quite well OCing. You reduce your system life overall with time and eventually even the most stable OC will cause the system to become unstable (but we talking years here 4+). I will dable in OCing for benchies and definitively on a temporary basis, but to buy a system to permanently OC is just not a good idea imho (ask dem ppl who have stock OC eVga and XFX 7900GTs that went belly up). But all the same I agree that there is no reason why even at stock the 1.83GHz 6300 shouldn't be fine. But to address your questions or point of what slows a dual core... there are LOTS of things. Especially if spyware is involved. I have 2 dual core systems now and I believe the 1 major slow down ATM is the HD speed. Dread you'll come to appreciate a raptor or raid array soon.

I'd say 965.

945/946 gz supports core 2, but it's pci-e x16 slot has only 4 active lanes.

with 975 you need to research the right mobo to determine if there's a second version, or if there's bios upgrades for conroe - and if then, you may have to buy/borrow/steal an old p4/celeron to flash the board.
:P random text doesn't go out of date does it?

Abit Max boards debut

i975 for fiddlers, overclockers

By Charlie Demerjian: Monday 21 August 2006, 13:04

DURING COMPUTEX, we told you about the new Abit and it's three lines of boards, standard, Fatality and Max. The first of the new Max boards has just just hit the market, overclockers start your engines.
The Max line is split from the Fatality boards, with Max aimed at the high-end stable overclocking set and Fatality at the gamers.

The first board in the Max line is the i975 based AW9D-MAX.

It differs from the normal AW9D in a few way, the most noticeable are the dual, rather than single heat pipes, and the added ports. Additionally, it has three more SATA ports and 1 e-SATA port as well. Other than that, the boards are fairly similar, although I would bet on a much higher overclocking on the -MAX board due to those little extra touches that are so hard to define.

In any case, it looks like the new Abit is going for the top of the OCing world. With its first post-Computex offering of a quad-core-ready i975 board, things are looking up already. µ
