Memorable stories about games
« on: July 28, 2006, 08:49:34 AM »
This is an attempt to combine ideas from the best games ever and back in the day threads. I have just a couple of guidelines.

1. Post a story about one particular game
2. The story should really be about an event that occured while playing the game. Good examples can be multiplayer hijinks, your first time seeing something in a game, an unforgettable moment in a game and a memorable time with friends on a game.
3. This can be open to all games: Arcade, console, PC, handheld, etc.
4. If you want to post stories for many games, you can do them over time. This will keep each story distinct.

I will start off with one of my favorites, Super Monkey Ball. Seeing the previews of this game brought back memories of Marble Madness for the NES, but that is another story. I knew I had to buy this game so I did when I got my Cube. My brother and I played through the beginner stages easy enough. Then we started the advanced stages. It took a while but we got through. Now the expert levels are a different story. Level one was ok. Level two had a shortcut. My brother took the shortcut and I didn't. What I saw next left my jaw situated on the floor for quite some time. The goal was on a platform that flipped around in a full 360 degree turn. My brother took one look at that, pointed at me and laughed hysterically. I still don't remember how or if I passed that. The level design in that game amazes me to this day.

Okay I have a story...I told most people about this before but I'll tell again. -_-
Christmas 2004 I was 19 years of age and I played a demo for a game called "Metal Gear Solid 3 Snakeeater". The game gave me a serious orgasm. I tell you it was a f***in' amazing game and I wanted to have it all to myself. I was sad to know that when the game was released it was rather expensive, and even though I had enough money to purchase this incredible game embedded in plastic...face it...I was a f***in' cheapskate. I didn't want to spend $500.00 TT for ONE game hells no.
So My friends in Arima gae me a shopping opportunity. They import games from the States and they sell it cheaper. I was therefore going to get a copy for $300.00. Unfortuantely they morphed from having 50 copies to 6 and it gets worse. I learned that 10 persons were going to arrive to buy the game. So the following morning I went to city gate to take a bus because maxis are basically sweat boxes on wheels....I reached the terminal and surprisingly there were no buses. I panicked..."how the f*** was I gonna get the game." " My Christmas is screwed."  "I can see it now; Philip Alexis, the only loser who failed to acquire the game because he's a godammned cheapskate!"
With thoughts and adrenaline coursing through my head I suddenly found myself, walking, to Arima...from P.O.S.
The trip took 4 hours but I succeded and I TRAVELLED back. When I played the game I learned lots of arts; like kicking somebody's virtual @$$ with extreme prejudice, flamming virtual women with extreme sexuality and shooting virtual weapons and ending virtual lives. I learned how to survive in the wilderness and No bs...I learned to appreciate the valor...of a cardboard box... long story short...I learned about life in the world of Snakeeater.

THE END ^_^

I was determined to get that game. Each droplet of sweat I wasted was rewarded with the wringing of the joypad

That is determination yes. I, on the other hand, just bought MGS 3 from Amazon about a month now for $5 US. I am a cheap @$$ gamer. Ok, so another story. I lived in Florida for a while and I would frequent the malls to check out the latest games. Stores would many times have a demo system for potential customers (and kids without money) to try out. I remember one time I was passing a store and I saw this huge black box with rounded corners. It was bigger than any system I had seen and looked almost like a piece of home theater equipment. Maybe it was because it was made by Panasonic as I noticed on the top. 3DO. Hmm ... interesting. There was a game on the screen called Need for Speed. The box was on display next to the system. I had heard of Road and Track magazine so I was already impressed with the game. The graphics were amazing and when I played it, I enjoyed the sense of speed. After playing, I thought that I might consider saving to buy the system. I went inside the store and asked the guy how much the system costed. Needless to say, I have never payed the ~$600 US asking price for it or any other system. I think that had to be the first adult styled, truly next-gen console to be released and I was sad to see it fade away.

Hah.  This will date myself...

A VERY long time ago I worked as a stocker at Winn Dixie Supermarket in Tennessee.  I went over to a friends house to play Double Dribble on the Super Nintendo (yeah, not even a Super Nintendo).  I wound up spending the night and doing a mini-sweat (before it was even called that) with 6 friends...we did a tournamwent.  The next day I was supposed to go to work at 12:00.  I called in and said that I was sick, because I wanted to stay and play my liast 2 games. The District Manager (my boss's boss) got on the phone and said "Sick or not, you must come in today.  Part of the reason that we hired you is because you live so close by, and you drive."  I responded with "How 'bout I just tell you f'off, mail me my final check, and we call it good?"  He didn't even know what to say.  Heck, I was 17, and had a mouth even then.  That experience has stuck with me to even this day.

Who needs money, if you already have games?
I'd believe u if you were right.

I believe one of the most memorable stories i have is playing a full on console LAN for the first time. Each time i played a new console there was a moment....my entire family plays games so much that we have so many. From the all nighters of play Golgo 13 and Uninvited for the NES to all night sweats with NES consoles on GOAL and Battle of Olympus....moving on to Double Dragon 2 and COntra sweats, then to Star Fox 64 multiplayer and Goldeneye multiplayer.
ANYWAY...besides the point
Was about 3 years ago playing HALO on the XBOX...the first one. After a meeting with my cousin who broke his leg playing football (he is over 30) and was looking for a console....he ended up deciding on the XBOX.......he likes FPS games allot.
So HALO came along and we started trying out the multiplayer.....we played 4 player on one console and that was cool....we enjoyed it. Now we knew we can try a system link....so my XBOX and his were linked and we had 2....and boy action start
one group in one room and another in a next. And we played from about 8pm till about 6am the next day....nonstop.
So it dawned upon us to get more XBOX's and more people. Flyers we emailed out...avatars were made, handles were created, drinking and such rules were put in order. Date and time was set. We ended up inviting a number of friends over and with 4 tv's and 4 XBOX's it was HALO fest all night. It was amazing.....no one under the age of 24 mind you....big men drinking beer, smoking, eating WINGS curry and playing HALO whole night.
Out on the veranda....we will stop and take a break..some men would sweat FIFA till we startup again. The action started around 8pm and went till about 3am. Real old talk in between, real fun.
We had it another time too....and realized two things. Too much of a good thing always tends to get ppl bored, and being that age, we have other things to do on weekends, like lime, and woman, and wife, and house etc etc. hence FOX IN THE BOX was created. It is geared to the HALO people....but its always good to have more people come in.
We met quite a few new faces and we had one hellova lime....happens a few times a year....HALO 2 now.....all night long.....beer, drinks, smokes, food...big men only. But the event is quite memorable. We dont really play competitively...we just play for fun. Gary takes pics of the stats screen at the end and makes a table...which he hasnt done in a while.
I think our next lime though is going to be a Dungeons and Dragons lime...so LOOOONG we have not played that game :)

I borrowed a cousin's PlayStation when I only had a N64. He played mostly N64 games and had the PS pack up. He only had a couple of PS games so I decided to rent one. It was called Gran Turismo 2. It was love at first sight. I played non stop for 2 days. When it was time to return it, I decided that the game was so good that I went to a store and bought a brand new copy (with a memory card of course). I played some more for a couple days. Then, I got the bad news. My aunt wanted me to return the PlayStation. So, I did the only thing any self-respecting gamer would do ... I immediately bought a brand new PlayStation.

most memorable for me is Playing Street FIghter 2 on my super nintendo. It was the only game i had really played for the system, i played that one alot after school and before. playing it for so long it showed me little tricks in the game against the computer. eg against chun lie jus run up and throw, against guile do shoruken till he does his swap kick then trip him, against blanka wait till he rolls then shoruken and so on.

Played it till i knew how to beat every single character flawless. and when i did it showed a group shot of all the characters different from wat i seen before (like that at the end of the actual movie).

i was in glee that actually made my day. :)

I hope this story does not bring back any memories for anyone. You will understand why after I tell it. I bought Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic a couple years ago when it came out. Needless to say, it was one of the best games I have ever played. I created my character (a female because she was easier on the eyes) and proceeded into the game. Some 30 hours later I found myself at a critical juncture where I faced off against a major villain. After the encounter, I waited for the next eye-opening piece of dialogue. However, what I experienced instead was a feeling of disgust. I had unknowingly triggered a glitch a little way back. The game froze on a character's face waiting for a response from another character. Worse, my previous save was too recent to fix the glitch. I could not continue my game. After checking on the net for any solutions, I tried basically all of them. Nothing worked. Well, the game was so good up to that point that I promptly restarted the game. It was better in the end because I leveled-up quite a bit more that I had the first time. For those who have yet to play or finish the game, I would advise that you Google the 'Carth glitch'. It will save you a lot of time.

the first time i ever played a game, it was at an arcade in curepe. i was like 7 yrs and i thought when u stick the token in an off machine it would have magically start up ^_^.  so i told the lady who runs the place and she tried to get it back, but in the end only ended up quarrling with me. (after a while me and my cousins were regs there). first "real game i played was a TMNT 4 player game. and right after that movie straight to Street fight, and have been playing it ever since. beating 16 and 18 year olds like nuthing.  i miss the old days of the arcade,  the environment really is something.

I remember de days when I was in CIC. There was an arcade next to Globe with quite a bit of games. I found out about it one day and I went a few times. What I didn't know at the time was that the deans had prefects visit there to see if any students were liming there after school. I ended up getting called to the dean's office for "strokes" because of going there. I never understood what the problem was about students going there after school. It was almost like a stigma to be in an arcade back then. If I could have done it again, I think I would have done the same thing, though.

I have some 3rd Strike moments.  If anyone cares to see let me know.  Not necesarrily the best matches but some interesting situations tend to come about.
