I need to know the know the tournament format, and please don't tell me about anything involving single elimination, cause then I just won't waste $30 coming downtown on a Sunday to play by rules that make no sense for the competitive circles and not used in any major fighting tournament outside of Guadeloupe.
Suggested Rules
Round Robin -> Double Elimination (top
Round Robin -
Single Match
3/5 rounds
Game Speed Turbo 2
all other settings default
Double Elimination Bracket - TOP 8
Best of 3 matches
2/3 rounds
Game Speed - Turbo 2
Winners & Losers Finals - Best of 5 matches
Grand Finals - Best of 7 matches
*EDIT*
So I just looked at my exam time table and realized that I have an exam Monday Morning
guess I won't be coming after all...Oh well

Alpha 3... great to see that the game still has so many followers... after seeing 30 signups for the game at VxG, and it being my first competitive fighting game, i got a sense of nostalgia playing that.... anyway
I gotta say RB has a point with the DE. For Vxg, it worked out really well. Matter of fact, we used round robins to decide who reached to the DE stage, which added more "longevity" to the tournament, but i guess only makes sense if you have at least 24 players in a game. But DE is A MUST for ANY fighting game. Samuel of Gigagames in Guadeloupe only used SE because 1) fighting games are not that popular there, 2) They have limited resources (time, system, referees) to run the competition and 3) they do not really understand the system.
RB is a great fighting game guru, go with his advice... as i said before, the man gave me some very good pointers for VxG. Good luck with the tournament and lemme know who wins

RB is a piece of work indeed. We have been over this a thousand times.
Round robin into Single Elimination is perfectly acceptable.
While we all agree that double elimination is "better" we must also agree that it has draw backs that may not make it suitable for a given event.
Typically the limit for these events are 16 entrants. Round robin prelims with two groups. Top 2 in each group go to the single elimination stage.
Entire thing should take about 5-7 hours from start to finish.
It's a tried and true formula that we used at GATT HQ countless times.
That said, this is Flips event, so ultimately he will decide which rules are in use this time around.

round robin format was like this
pools of 4 top 2 advancing
everyone played everyone else in their pool once ( 1 match 3/5 rounds)
at the double elimination stage it was best of 3 matches (3/5 rounds)

Well in our round robin, we play two matches, 3/5 rounds.
Also, keep in mind that the number of consoles in use would have been more at vxg,evo,giga,etc.. as compared to the measly one or two consoles for these small events.

well the fact that we played two games instead of their one is reason enough for ours to take twice as long.
Why did they only use one console though??? That's a bit strange.
In Gigagames about 20 PS2 systems or more were used.

there were more systems, but there were different games running at the same time + ps2s for casuals. I still think that time is still kinda long (7hrs wtf) the 3hrs was an approximation, because thats how long it took with us having to wait for persons who were in other games to come to play...
btw is this thing still on ?

The 3s and T5 tournaments rb coordinated took barely over 2hrs and there were about 32 competitors for the 3s I think. T5 had more of course and it still didn't get anywhere past 3hrs.

That still makes no sense. In the format RB used all games played were at least best out of 3 meaning that there were times when we had to wait on the outcome of a THIRD game. The semis and finals were best out of 7 which could have easily made things very lengthy but yet it didn't. And as I recall, the t5 finals on both the winner and loser brackets HAD to go the seventh game.
Still, NOT 3hrs.

We were talking about the VXG tournament imperial, where RB says they played one game against each person in the group as opposed to our typical format where we play two games against everyone in your group.
Simple math suggests that our event should take twice as long as it has twice the number of games.

What? I can't talk about VXG. Last I checked, I didn't go.
You could be talking about whatever tourney man. Easily, VXG had twice the competitors for their events. It still didn't run as long as 5-7hrs. Just by crunching the numbers you'd still be led to believe that such an undertaking would take longer than an event with half the participants or at best around the same time considering that they played one game less. And again, I say it, didn't take that long as far as reports from Rolando and RB.
And to reiterate, I was referring to rb's tournaments because they often ran THREE games between competitors AND a total of FOUR best of seven matches at the end yet did NOT cross so much as 3hrs. I'm wasting time typing this as I see you've already made up your mind to waste time with an unsuitable format.
Of course, that's just my opinion... I could be wrong.
