dota is the counter strike of the RTS world.

and like counter strike, it will not die anytime soon.

Those games have been around since competitive gaming has been around.

It is repetitive and "boring" but that has little to do with their success.

If you want a perfect real world analogy.....football

Exact same deal each and every time.

11 men on a field, no use of hands, just feet....get the ball into the opponents net. 90 minutes to do the deed as many times as possible.

Wash Rinse Repeat.

Boring stuff no doubt (and don't even get me started on cricket)

Sounds familiar?

Yet, football is the #1 sport in the world. People even get killed over it.

Why? Competition.

Now, to be honest, I've never played a game of DOTA in my life. It looks like a fascinating game, though.....right up to the point where people just started to abuse the game worse than a busload of orphans at the Neverland Ranch. Every time I walk into an Internet cafe, it's always:

"Hey guys, how about some COD?"
"Nah, boy....we playing DOTA right now."
"Hey, who's up for some DOTA?"
"Ooh! Me! Me!"
"FOR THE HORDE!"
"That's WoW, numbnuts."
"DOTA! DOTA! DOTA!"

Holy Jeebus.
If I was to hazard a guess though, I'll say that this game suffers from severe 'SOF syndrome'.
People are just whoring the game to death.
To that end, I'd say that there are four games that fall here: SOF (of course), DOTA, Super Smash Bros. Melee (thanks for hogging the TV to play that EVERY SINGLE AFTERNOON OF EVERY SINGLE DAY after school in SnS, you eight legged FREAKS) and Naruto (yes, I've gone there. SCREW that game and the fact that it's only popular because of the equally fabbish anime. SCREW it, I say!)

But, then again, that's just me. :)

Naruto is popular because it is a great game.

There are many other franchise based games out there that TOTALLY flop. I mean totally. In fact, it is almost status quo that a game made on a popular movie/cartoon is gonna be crap.

Naruto is definitely an exception to that rule.

As for DOTA. You are damn right. It has replaced SOF as the most abused multiplayer game in GATT.

I'm not complaining. (Just as the sns people never complained about SOF)

It is great fun.

The only issue I have is that noobs can't get in on the action easily. They are pretty much run out of the GL if they play a game and cause the team to lose. Can lead to a lot of animosity.

That's unfortunate, cause it means it'll be the same pplz over and over again, with no expansion since n00bs being sidelined. Baego yuh should do something about that. Never know when a Jonathon Fatal1ty in the making pass through.

well the first time I played it I got wtfpwned all over the place. That did not help my disposition towards the game.

Being the competitive sort, my solution was simple. H4x0r the mcs!!!

Well not really, but I cheated my way to ultra dota gamer level by memorizing a DOTA Hero Strategy Guide from dotaportal.com

It pretty much gives you the kitchen sink and a few extras on how to play a particular hero and maximize his pwnage in the game.

Followed it to a T and soon my character was monster killing up a storm. Turning games around and winning it for my team.

That helped convert me into a DOTA lover, big time.

So if you want to enjoy the game but don't want to spend a month or two being called a noob and run out of every corridor on red life, invest some time in reading a strategy guide.

You will feel cheap and dirty for doing so....but you'll pwn and love the game. lol

then when i went online on euro server men wasnt playing the ap for me to pick veno soo i got a hero that i didnt know how to play after i get my ass washed i went and look up on dortal portal wat to buy for the character. and every other game i would do the same thing didnt know how to play the character i looked it up. Till i got to know all the characters and they moves.

its good to watch repalys too from dota portal. and watching others play and opponents items if they conducting real sweaty.
