Wireless USB sends data through walls Ultrawideband could be the new Wi-FiBy Nick Farrell: Thursday 08 June 2006, 08:30 A US start-up says that it has fixed the range problems which has plagued ultrawideband communications and has designed a wireless USB that can send data through walls. TZero claims that its components can produce 100-Mbit data rates across distances of between 10 and 30 meters. It says it will have a product in the shops by July. So far, ultrawideband communications have been stuck in one room, because the through-put drops off rapidly the further you move away from communication points. Close up data can be transferred at 480 Mbps but this drops off to about 100 Mbps at 10 meters. This is a good thing for those who want to replace cables with short range USB wireless devices, however TZero thinks that its flavour of the technology could kill off audio-visual cables. Wi-fi can't deal with audio-visual information nearly fast enough, TZero says. µ
