New ISP : FLOW
« on: May 19, 2006, 12:54:29 AM »
Columbus communications , which has roots in Jamaica , the bahamas etc. will soon be offering broadband to trinidad and tobago via optic fibre links ,  one optic fibre line will carry voice , data and television . A friend of mine's brother is doing an advertisement for them , apparently the speeds go up to 5mbits download ,  tstt offers only 1.55mbit T1 for 4000tt a month...
No worries about availability or latency , this same company bought out the local cable company  at some point in time  and thus this new optic fibre system will build upon the one already in place and replace the copper that cable currantly comes through, so wherever you get cable, you can soon get fibre , also this company his big money and access to inter island fibre optic links :

Quote
Through the acquisition of New World Networks (in September 2005), Columbus Communications substantially increased its presence in both the Caribbean and Latin American Region. New World Networks is a wholesale provider that offers advanced, high-speed bandwidth capacity to telecommunications companies and Internet Service Providers.

New World owns over 90% undivided interest in the Americas Region Caribbean Optical-ring System ("ARCOS"), an undersea broadband fiber-optic cable network. ARCOS is 8,600 km in length and connects the United States with Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

Columbus Communications also has a significant presence in Trinidad, through the acquisition of 100% of Trinidad and Tobago Trans-Cable Company Limited (Trinidad Cable). Trinidad Cable is the market leader in subscription video in Trinidad serving over 100,000 subscribers. Columbus Communications is currently deploying an advanced broadband network on the island of Trinidad to deliver the triple play of video, data and voice services.

Columbus Communications owns 100% of FibraLink Jamaica Limited ("FibraLink"). FibraLink is now commissioning a submarine fibre optic network with three landing points in Jamaica with a connection to the ARCOS network in Dominican Republic. Designed with 160 Gb/s capacity, the FibraLink network will provide cost-effective bandwidth to the island of Jamaica at the ready for service date of March 31 st , 2006.

Basically  they own the company that  supplies TSTT With bandwidth , so they can get all they want and more , TSTT is gonna be owned soon if this comes through as expected , tstt's currant bandwidth is 380mbits if what i read in the papers is to believed , this new company can come through with tens or hundreds of GIGABITS of bandwidth, no more stinking 256k dsl!

i would give yu chakura but.... wouldnt really make a diff

But what about tstt's monopoly on voice service, wont that hamper the triple play?

The question is when they are going to be finished setting up the fibre. Hopefully it will be around the same time my contract with TSTT expires, in about a year and a half.

i'll talk to my friend next week after english exams , if we could get a full 5mbit upload/download line in HQ no more worrries about paying for servers in the states ,we can host our own BF2/Hl2/Quake wars servers here at low latency   plus have enough banwidth left over for people to surf and torrent happily ...
or if every cafe on the island gets connected to it we could set up a WAN using hamachi ,great low latency gaming for cheap

if this is the real deal then i make a huge mistake in renewing my TSTT DSL contract for TWO years PLUS taking smart choice bronze (finalised last week) ..... granted that it cut my dsl bill to $270/month before VAT for the next 2 years.

But still i will gladlypay a higher price for 512+K internet anyday.... dang!!

I have to wait til may 2008 for my contract to end...

gdstech, you sure that's a 2 year contract with SmartChoice Bronze

Cause I pay $272 with a 3 year contract and SmartChoice Gold

But still i will gladlypay a higher price for 512+K internet anyday.... dang!!

512Kbps is nothing now. With the emerging competitors and TSTT's own EV-DO option, we're looking at speeds in MBps

EV-DO - theoretical max 2.4Mbps
Roofnet - someone said 128Mbps
Columbus - min. connection speed ~1Mbps (but more like 5Mbps)

So DSL should at least hit 1.544Mbps for residential, sooner rather than later. We may even see the new DSL speeds from TSTT as I hear they upgrading lines too

Yeah voyd 2 yr contract and smart choice bronze @ $272 sounding about right. I have te same contract length and smart choice package and pay that same price. At the point in time we signed up, there was a special on the DSL for their 10 year annaversary which explains the lower price.

Cant wait for that increase in speed tough...It's about damn time.

TSTT is also laying optic fibre to provide the same services...

ADSL can go up to 8-10mbits i f you are  close to the tstt base station , 4 mbits at a medium distance ,  1-2 at around 6km away...  TSTT just holding out on us... A guy hacked tstt and uncapped his DSL once , pic attached shows his speeds... Also a few years ago ADSL's speed was 1mbit ie. 128kilo BYTES per second , with 256 and 512 speeds available , then tstt wisened up and capped it down to Kilobits.. 1/8th the speed..

Voyd, what you see is what i get. i can even show you my bill. Phone/DSL bill went from $615 last month to $491 currently due (it was on average about $650 - $700/month)

but I do hope that when the time comes for faster speed that TSTT will be generous enough to say

"here you are, sir. We love you so much that we'll give you 768Kbps at least at your current price."
