I know, but still just hoping, it's better than nothing other than dialup at this stage! :)

I'm gonna be calling TSTT to find out more about it though...

holy crap Baego, careful you rev that up and crash into a wall or something.

the person who asked for a pic of the device, yeah same here, would be cool to see your setup.

not really, remember, regardless of the number of flavours offered, the internet access of the island is still only servicing the same max population.

Trinidad is a small island. 1.2 million people.

There are other islands and countries with many more customers to service and they manage just fine, bandwidth wise.

We just have to pay a higher premium for our internet due to economies of scale.

As requested. Here is a picture of the EVDO device in the living flesh.

just as follow up on the device, for the past 3 days I have downloaded 25GB of data.

That works out to an average of 96K / second. Three times residential DSL performance.

So far so great.

Or ok cool. Kinna looks like a router. Is the blackberry part of the setup? Where is this thing located maybe i can employ some stealth tactics under the cloak of darkness to make it "disappear". 25gigs in 3 days? ???!!!! that is wtfpwnership speeds never before seen by ordinanry residential users.

This thing look like it could send a signal to a wireless card by itself w/o need for anything else.

lol @ blackberry. That's a dud. A vodafone foam toy handed out at a convention in the UK.

The device, this particular model is precisely the same as a DSL router. In that you can connect it to your existing network with a normal ethernet cable (yes that includes Wireless Routers) or to a computer via the USB option. Great if you have a desktop pc or laptop without a network card.

There is another model that is a PCMCIA card for laptop users. If you do not have a home network and own a laptop, that is the one for you. True wireless internet freedom.

Lol @ foam phone.

Just as i thought about it being similar to a router. Maybe there's a way to tweak existing non ev-do routers to add the feature (firmware update maybe?)

That device in a PCMCIA card? Good news for laptop users indeed.

Nice sig update. blotoye @ fear bigup

Halle is nice to see as always.

Well the primary difference between the standard DSL router and the EV-DO router is the wireless aspect. It uses those two black antennae instead of a RJ11 based phone wire back  to your wall socket. As a result, a firmware upgrade won't be enough to get the traditional speedstream boxes talking EVDO.

Yeah, I was shocked to think they could shrink all that bulk down into a PCMCIA card. Amazing what technology can do. Hopefully reception won't suffer as a result of the miniaturization.

hahhaa @ Halle

That is my girl. Saw her out sporting the X brand again so I could not resist updating the sig with the new pic. Got a lil carried away and updated the whole thing. lol

oh and trini, DSL users had that sort of speed from the onset. The first round of residential DSL accounts were configured for 1024k, not 128k. In reality, people got blazing fast 128K downloads as opposed to the lowly 16K and 32K that we suffer with today. All for the same $400 a month. That went on for well over a year. I should know, because we had that very service down at GATT HQ.

TSTT eventually wisened up though and all newer accounts were throttled down to 128k and 256k. They then revisited the old accounts and throttled those down to 512K and began offering the 1024k DSL as a $3500+ option.

Don't feel too badly. TSTT business customers (like myself) have it much worse. We pay $1100+ for 128k dsl to our offices. OUCH!

Yeah i know the speedstream wont do it....i meant to say the wireless dsl routers. Also how does it work interms of accounts. They actually setup an account for you specific to the wireless or is it the same as the ordinary DSL. I mean if one can convert a normal dsl w/less router to an ev-do device and after that just connect....hmmmm...well....

It just goes to show that they could have mead that thing at least half the size as a standalone device.

oh I see what you mean.

Now that comes down to frequency.

I know that it is CDMA based. SO the question is whether a regular linksys WRT router can be tweaked to use those frequencies. After that, whether any hardware unique identifiers are in use. Like the sim system in GSM. Something that identifies the equipment on TSTTs network.

This will surely lead down a grey and illegal path, lol

well seeing as it is a mobile product, it doesn't matter if you had DSL previously.

If your grandma takes out the service in Cunupia and you bring it to your home in Maraval, it is still gonna work.

but remember, DSL is tried and true. This is very new stuff, so it may be working great today and be rubbish next month.

As a side note, if money isn't a problem and you're into online games, consider the convenience of having two connections. This setup allows you to play on your DSL and have your downloads constantly running on the EVDO. Nirvana.

How about merging the TWO of them? DSL AND EV-DO to make one OMGWTFLEVELPWNERSHIP connection.

DSL is indeed tried and true and i surely not going to give it up until something else (EV-DO) proves itself to be superior over time.

I (as well as everyone here i'm sure) itching for TSTT to give us a lil 512.

EV-DO sounding nice but unfortunately money is a problem
