UPDATE: I have been able to 'trick' M$ Antispyware into giving me the Windows Defender exe file, and its easier than you think.
First of all, for this to work, your Automatic Updates should be set to 'Notify' and not 'Automatic'. Then, when the update icon notifies you of pending updates, carefully inspect the updates and weed out the 'Windows Genuine Advantage' by unchecking it.
Download and install updates as normal, then install your MS Antispyware. Once its running, it will eventually ask you to upgrade to Windows Defender. If you use DAP (Download Accelerator Plus) or some other download utility that runs in the background, it should 'grab' the attepmt by MS Antispyware to download the file and happily do it for you. Of course, once you have the Windows Defender exe file, its smooth sailing from there.
Your personal results may vary.

That's great except that it requires MS WGA to install the file if I recall. I downloaded the exe and tried to install it on another machine I own, save and except I recently reinstalled the OS on it and guess what, it doesn't have all those updates as the one I downloaded it on. So I tried to install it and WHAM, it says update x y and z need to be there in addition to MS WGA ala SPYWARE. So I said FIAH!!! besides defender is a BAG OF @$$ compared to the competition out there. My only concern is cause MS is using it's MSN messenger strategy which is BETA for years till you gain market share then convert to full stream, tonnes of ppl will say well i've been using it all this while, I might as well pay for it (finished version) syndrome. MS dirty no MC.

Not to mention to updates
Over time you will find that if you're not on WGA, Windows Defender will either a) not update the spyware definitions or b) not update the app itself.
Keep an eye on it.

Actually, since I installed it, Windows Automatic Updates notified me of a definition update for Windows Defender, and happily downloaded it and installed it.
So I would say its working quite well, and I did not need the WGA to install it. Apparently, the version that you actually download from MS has the WGA built in (I think), but this version of the exe does not.
De ting wukkin man. Anybody who want the exe just PM me and I will hook up a upload. I tried it on about 10 different PCs so far (including my notebook), so I'm pretty confident that its working now.

Yeah but you're missing the point.
It may work today but could easily not work tomorrow.
Remember they way it updates, which can include the exe of the entire application. That means it could easily pull down a WGA version of itself that will do the checking and terminate the service once an illegal key is found or such.
You cannot block it from phoning home since it needs the live connection for updates. Perfect catch 22.
It still is a pretty good tool to have but I only use it for legit XP installs.
