Shutdown problem

Dont know if this thread is in the right place, but here goes:

I just upgraded to a MSI Neo4 Platinum motherboard, and all was going well until I ran into a very strange and most annoying problem.  Every time i shut down the system, it will actually power itself back on.

Windows shutdown happens normally, with no error messages or bluescreens, and the power goes off like it should.  After 3-20 seconds (the time varies greatly), the system powers back on and boots normally into Windows.  If I press the power button immediately after it restarts however (during the POST), it comes off and stays off.

Checks of the Event Viewer reveals no system or application errors after the restart.  There is no evidence to suggest that any kind of hardware or software problem has occured.

Here's what I have done so far:

**I've updated the BIOS to the latest version.
**I have ensured that no 'wake up events' are enabled in said BIOS.
**Replaced the power-supply (24-pin 550 volt) with another one of the same model. (no name brand)
**I've even gone so far as taking off the case's fron panel and replacing the power switch.

This is a problem I have never seen before, and I must admit, I'm stumped, but I have a hunch that this problem is power-supply related.  I would hate to believe that the motherboard is the problem.  I can dismiss all of the other hardware as they were used before, and I did not have this problem.  The only new components are motherboard, video-card, and power-supply.

Have any GATTers seen this problem?  If so, what can I do to solve it?
Once the PC is on, it works splendidly, but when I shut it down, I would like it to stay off.

Any suggestions, ideas would be very welcome.

You can try checking the feature in the BIOS that has to do with the powerstate after loss of electricity etc...some boards allow the machine to be powered back on once electricity returns...might be a case where something is tripping it and causing it to restart...perhaps a spike in the power line...do you have it connected to a line conditioner? That should help to rule out that possibility.

I have seen this problem before with a PC at one of my old workplaces. I think after we shuffled around a combination of devices in it, it finally gave in and shutdown when we asked it to. As to what specifically was the cause...I can't say.

I've come across this problem a few times, would you believe it's a windows issue? yeah it can be sometimes. In the extreme, a clean install should sort out your problems, otherwise once your system is convoluted to the point where it does this, well thats about it really, reinstall or perhaps its a driver issue with another device (video or sound card) or even a legacy device you're using (an old zip drive or tv tuner). I agree with Czar, try shuffling around the PCI cards in the system, or scrap it all, leave ONLY the bare essentials and shutdown, if your're successful, insert another card and try again, you'll eventually figure out which is the culprit (should it be a hardware issue).

i once encountered this problem. it turned out to be a spyware program that had writen a wake up command i think it was in cmos or something..... obvious reinstaller......

After DAYS of digging, I FINALLY identified the problem.

The mobo's on-board Marvell Gigabit LAN drivers has a 'Magic Packet' setting in the Device Manager, which was set to 'enabled'.  I disabled it and BAM!!!  No more reboot.

I discovered this quite by accident.  I had powered off the PC with the LAN cable disconnected, and was initially quite puzzled when it did not restart.  Something in my mind said 'plug in de cable an try again'.  I did and was not very surprised when the PC rebooted.  Careful scrutiny of the Device Manager revealed the parameter. Apparently it is enabled by default.

So now I have two extra 24-pin power supplies for sale.
Any takers?
