Vista licensed for use on devices of "up to two processors" only

Multi-processor conundrum

By INQUIRER newsdesk: Tuesday 09 January 2007, 15:32

INTERESTING SNIPPETS from Microsoft's licence terms for retail software reveal that the software maker insist that users must assign their copy of the upcoming operating system to what Microsoft terms one "single device".

The device, the outfit helpfully explains, is a "physical hardware system".

A hardware partition or blade is considered to be a separate device, the fimr notes.

The terms state that the software may be used "on up to two processors on that device at one time."

This may of course will cause much stratching of heads with innocent users as they are persuaded to buy more multi-core and multi-processor systems in the future.

With chip makers happily cobbling together more and more processors to achieve more apparently parallel cores, the definition of what constitutes a single processor may need tightening up if we're to avoid volish copyright cops banging on too many doors.

AMD eight-core anyone? µ
So whats the point of Kentsfield and Quadfather and Octfather? So we make quad cores commercially available and then take away your 'right' to use them unless you pay MS more money.. mother f&*(ers

nah, it was always so tho....

2000 professional and XP  were both  for up to 2 processors

how it decides to recognise multicores  is a different kettle of fish tho.. if it on the same die, it should still constitute one processor..

but then again.... MS pushin this new Home Server isht.....  so anything possible ( though inq. is too sensational for my liking....)

Thats media for you. But I am sure ppl using apps such as Oracle and other proprietary apps would agree with them, as they pay thru their noses and other bodily orafices for processor licensing... but on a seriousness, anyone know how to get a Windows OS with license for 4-8 CPUs? and I believe they will keep core count as CPU count... for that matter, what the hell was the license for a Pentium 4 EE with 2 cores + 2 HT?

Government tells schools to avoid Vista

Beware of the Vole

By Nick Farrell: Friday 12 January 2007, 07:38
Click here to find out more!
THE UK schools' computer agency has warned schools of the dangers of buying Microsoft's Vista.

The British Educational Communications and Technology Agency said that deploying Vista was risky and its benefits were unclear.

According to ZD Net, the Agency is telling schools not to deploy the latest VoleWare for at least a year.

The agency gives Vista a poor report saying that it contained no "must-have" features in Vista and but came with "technical, financial and organisational challenges associated with early deployment.”

As for Office 2007, the Agency said that while there were many new features in Office 2007, most of these were only useful in the private sector and as useful as a chocolate teapot for schools.

A jolly indignant Vole was quoted as saying that punters should test the operating system themselves and decide.

So true. No significant, upgrade inspiring features to shout about for ANY ENTITY running XP. Not at a $400us price tag. One of the only things is the DX10 issue, which as yall know will only be available on Vista. They sure are a clever bunch of rats because they know damn well if they only put dxx in XP, Vista's sales will be screwed even harder, faster, longer.

meh . it won't be deployed, but  they still gonna be payin the Vista tax via OEM. ( tho sometimes, you can negotiate no-OS, or an earlier version as a large customer..)

so  financially, MS still wins.

Yeah so true. Once there is OEM, there will be sales. Completely stop selling XP OEM and only Vista. Guaranteed sales right there.

Either that or guaranteed drop in sales. This whole conspiracy of a new (nothing really added) OS and the updated hardware required is just to put more money in MS and the likes of intel, daamit, etc pockets. As a friend of mine said, why does Vista use SO  much resources for the interface when Linux can do it on a mere 64MB of RAM? instead of 1GB of RAM and Brand new Intel Core 2 Duo Extremely expensive ed, a spanking new non PCIe sig certified 88XXGT/X I mean really... what is this OS bringing that is SO worth the upgrade? (note I am exagerating on the specs save for the 1GB of ram).

I am sure price will help make that decision too, so hopefully good sense will prevail and ppl won't just rush out. Yes there will be early adoptors... but I think the majority will be slow and gradual.

nah but really..

how many people buy their OS retail as opposed to OEM? ( or piracy..lol.)

the average harrypersad is going to get his spankin new dell box with a pipin hot copy of vista home basic ( which he might get chain up to upgrade to home premium cuz it have aero)

after a year or so, the point will be moot

when XP came out, i was like nah..  thas a incremental upgrade. i stickin to 2000 pro..

riiightt....

Well there was a slow adoption of XP, heck there are lots of places still running 2000 and even NT.. I think there was a US government outfit that was still running NT up to recently... so we'll see. I do agree the large distros in the world, the dells and HPs, etc will push out Vista. But, that will take time as it involves alot of COST to buy all that new hardware.

businesses and govts generally wait a while, that is true.. sometimes skipping a generation

in fact, there are still ATMs that rock OS/2 still... the bank where i  was workin, they still had NT4 massively deployed up to a couple years ago..

but what i gettin at is 1) when they buyin the machinery, a licensed copy of vista more often than not will be purchased( though not deployed)
in any event, they buy on a schedule.. like every 3 or 5 years ( barring the small orders here an there).  braps ., they call down 400 new HP desktops..    is all according to the budget...

and 2) small business and home users will be rockin vista anyhow, cuz thas what they bought the pc with..
and they generally buy every 2-3 years..

3) XP came close on the heels of 2000 pro ( and ME.. *shudder*) .. kinda long in tooth now.. Vista lookin kinda extra purdy, cuz a tha fact

new hardware expensive, but yuh still have the bargain basement 399 specials that runnin vista ( perhaps MS was being forsighted by makin aero run on integrated intel gfx)

PCs still gonna sell..  i remember when a entry level PC was $1500US..    ( albeit back in 1995) and they still sold...

Well the trick is it will WORK on intel int, but NOT with all the bells and whistles. So its more Vista CAPABLE then VISTA AERO approved. For instance, the latptop I am using right now, brand new HP. Has a Designed for Windows XP/Windows Vista CAPABLE sticker on it. It uses INTEL INTEGRATED CRAP. Thus it will WORK with Vista, but DO NOT expect AERO to do much at all. Remember, Vista doesn't HAVE to work with AERO effects.

aero runs runnin horribly on the integrated intel, yes

but MS still pockets money off the license....   ( or if they upsell you from the home basic to home premium, is win-win for them)

Microsoft has defended the digital rights management systems integrated into its new Vista operating system.

It follows reports that Vista would "downgrade" the quality of all video and audio, if they were not output via approved connections on the PC.

Microsoft said only the quality of "premium content" would be lowered, and only if requested by copyright holders.

The measures are in place, says the firm, to protect content such as high definition movies from being copied.

Vista's copy protection systems have come under fire from many quarters, including recently from Peter Gutmann, a computer science lecturer at the University of Auckland.

In a report looking at the impact Vista would have on video and audio playback, he described Vista's Content Protection specification as "the longest suicide note in history".

He said Vista was "broken by design" and intentionally crippled the way it displayed video.

"The sheer obnoxiousness of Vista's content protection may end up being the biggest incentive to piracy yet created," he wrote.

Microsoft admits Vista screwed - report

Puts service pack on fast track

By Nick Farrell: Tuesday 23 January 2007, 07:46
SOFTWARE FIRM Microsoft has put the first service pack for its new super soaraway Vista operating system, which has not even made it onto the consumer market, on the "fast track".

That is to say, it is hurrying up to fix it.

According to APC.mag, Monsignor Vole is planning the service pack for the operating system for the second half of this year.

Vista SP1 is code named "Fiji", presumably after a pretty looking island which is paralysed by coups.

In a statement regarding the service pack Microsoft admits that Vista has "high impact" problems.

We assume that this is not because Vista fails to perform after it is dropped out of an aircraft and is probably a euphemism.

This week it is calling for its chums, customers and partners to actively test Fiji and provide feedback. [Not on my machine, Ed.] µ

Imagine that. The thing aient even come out. If I recall correctly, wasn't vole talking about making it so secure and bug free that various updates, patches and security fixes would be kept to a minimum? After all, look how lonng this thing in the developmental stage, it ought to be pretty damn good. Wait...hahahahaha or yea riht I forgot who we were talking about.

Korean government warns against Vista upgrade

Active X problems

By Nick Farrell: Wednesday 24 January 2007, 09:24
Click here to find out more!
THREE SOUTH Korean government bodies have warned punters not to upgrade to Microsoft Vista.

The Ministry of Information and Communication, the Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs, and the Financial Supervisory Service is expecting confusion if too many Koreans upgrade to Vista.

According to Chosun.com, most Korean Internet sites use Active X which Vista doesn't work very well with.

This means that banking, stock trading, and shopping sites will not work and Vista users will also experience problems with government sites in applying for and printing documents and certificates.

Vole had been working with online service providers to fix the problem, but had been too slow. Now it seems that the online service the Kwangju Bank, CitiBank, Shinhan Bank, Woori Bank, Hana Bank, the National Agricultural Cooperatives Federation, and the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives will not work. NHN, a major Korean portal, said that its online payment system will not handle Vista until the end of the month.

Melon, SK Telecom's music downloading service, says it will not be Vista ready until March.

The Ministry of Information and Communication said that it wished it could tell a private company like Microsoft to postpone the release of Vista, but it can't. The best thing, an official said, was not to install Vista before you know what you're getting into. µ

That aside I hear MS extended support for XP until 2010.. so why switch to Vista now if yuh gettins support til then?
