Contemplations of a crazy modder
« on: January 23, 2006, 05:35:08 PM »
i saw the pc in oil... and was wondering..

what if

Since i plan on building a pc next year i was contemplating doing the oil thing but only this time,

going further than that

SLI
Dual core proc the works
a real nice piece of machinery
3 gigs ah ram and ting

but putting fans in the oil to move it around, allowing for overclocking even higher 6 ghz is what i'm aiming for..

to get that i figure i can cool the oil using a radiator and ac type unit, cooling it through the radiator and bringing it back into the system
i.e. radiator outside
psu and harddrive in the case but in a separate part..

EVGA GeForce GTX 580 3Gb
Corsair Enthusiast 750 W PSU Modular
Intel Core i5 2500K
ASUS Sabertooth P67
Crucial m4 64 GB SSD
Corsair Vengeance 16 Gigs DDR3

I think immersion in oil is a bit  too much, i mean... if you need to  open up the case to check something your hands will get all greasy... attracting flies.. ants and other insects to go take a swim in your rig , not to mention the smell..
I think it more applicable and not much more expensive to get a water cooling system for your GPU and CPU ..
Besides,  i'm sure you can get 60% or more of the possible overclock out of a chip on AIR cooling.. spending 1500tt extra for exotic cooling ain't worth it in my book when weighed against the overclock i can already squeeze out on good air cooling.. and i don't mind noise...
Anyhow you take it running a processor at high overclock and voltage will kill it faster than normal ,   i know lots of stories of A64s and P4s dying after a year or so overclocked , that or the motherboard just fries from stress...

Go for it if you want.. but i don't recommend it.

The dream of most PC users is a silent, cool and eye-catching PC. We'll usually settle for 2/3 of those. The folks on Tom's Hardware have gone and tried to get all 3... This is their approach:

Strip Out The Fans, Add 8 Gallons of Cooking Oil

Anyone feeling to try this one with their gaming rig to see if it really stands up to the test?
