Signed. I think the fact that he used a gamer's death to his own advantage was downright evil of him. I sure hope he gets what he deserves, that pompous horse's ass.

Yeah right. And you folks think that a ultra-fanatic-anti gaming-Christian-right wing-uber conservative would have trouble getting 50 x the amount of petitioners to demand his job back? Get real.

The man is sleaze, but remember the law of conservation of energy. There's no way you can get more work out of something than you actually put into it. And putting your name on an on-line petition only counts as 0.05 erg.

One word: Loonatics.
One 11 year old boy's petition altered that show.
Do some searching if you have to, but it goes to show you that if the people rally, and enough of them do, then the people in charge has to, at the very least, consider it. So, sorry Gambitt...that point really doesn't hold water.

And, actually, yes, Jack would have trouble finding supporters for his cause.
The very people he represented in the past has disavowed any connection to him for his antics.

Sigh. Dont be a "Thompson's Gamer". The petition specifically requests that he be fired. Who exactly is going to fire him? You? Me?

The petition is clearly addressed to Gamers, not to "The Employers of JT" or even a "To whom it may concern" or even a "The people in charge". What does this tell you. Who exactly is going to sit up and pay attention? If it weren't a Thompson's Gamer petition, it would have been made out to "The Govenors of the Florida Bar" or something along those lines instead of what it is.

Hell, I cant find anything about what firm he works for, but I did find this: http://www.floridabar.org/names.nsf/All/07D079003898F95585256A830051348B?OpenDocument That suggests to me he's not working for a firm, so you'll probably have to convince him to fire himself.

As I recall there was a study that said <25% of all online petitions get a response of some kind. On the other hand personal letters written to US Senators are usually reported as being given a "higher priority" for their offices.

So as I asked earlier: How is signing this petition going to get the man "fired"?

As to him finding support, all he has to do is google "computer games satanic" and he'll probably find a whole list of fanatics who are willing to back him. I dunno if you ever saw it but there was once a guy on local TV on a church program trying to convince us that cartoons are the devil. He-man, She-ra, Thundercats, Smurfs, you name it. That's Jack's support base, and all the grannies and parents who listen to morons like that.

Basically, the bar that allows him to practice law in a state can determine whether he can still do his job there.

He's already been barred from practising law in Alabama, and he's already under review by the Florida Bar for his antics.
(Causing Jack to lash out at the Florida Bar on his website.) So basically, we can't 'fire' him, per say, but rather petition to the Legal Authorities to bring his actions under review, because he is obviously acting out of sheer prejudice.

Yes, he was barred in Alabama... actually he was denied his request to step down and was then kicked off the team by a judge but I believe that it was a temporary permit to practice in alabama anyway. Not sure tho...

He was under review in Florida, since late 2k5, and he responded to that by sending out a personalised letter to "the govenors of the Florida bar" et al. You will note that he did not choose to start a petition but chose the mode of communication generally considered to be "higher on the priority list" than oh... I dunno... petitions.

Now since we both agree that we as gamers can't "fire" him, per se, isnt putting a virtual signature on that particular petition pointless?

Does its very wording (to say nothing of some of the responses) not invalidate it? Or at the very least discount its purpose?

I mean if I were Jack, I'd pick it up and wave it around as proof that at least 50% of all gamers have below average intelligence. And hey, that's just pure statistics regardless of who posted what. ;)

Oy vey. You know what? I am so going to drop this right now, because it's like arguing with a brick wall over something so freaking pointless. So, back to the petition.

Bro, what I'm saying is that that particular petition is as you say "freaking pointless". It's flawed from the start.

If you want to start a well written one to the relevant law bodies in the states, I'd be 100% willing to give a e-signature. Look at the replies that this thing has gotten. I mean actually sit down and read through them, the way you'd expect the person reviewing it to.

Look at the first page at least. The second signature is by someone calling themselves Jack Thompson... or #9 is about his sexual preferences... or #19 which is just random BS by someone who obviously doesnt take his signature seriously... or #23 about him eating babies... And this is the first page.

And this isn't even considering the repeat posters who are too dumb to change their username when they are flaming him. (Accidental double posting I can live with as it's not intentional, but take a look at #9 and #83)

If you, as a "non-gamer, high up, legal person, who was acting impartially", were to review this petition would you take it seriously?

Yes, some of the responses are pretty stupid, but I suppose the person behind the petition is  going to edit it for content before he hands it up. It'd be pretty pointless to send it as is, because it contains flames and spam mixed up with the valid comments, which there is an abundance of. In the meantime, if you don't like it, you don't have to sign. I signed anyway for two reasons, 1) I don't like how Jack Thompson is moving; and 2) there are a lot of people like myself on that petition who aren't filling up that thing with 'OMG! JACK THOMPSON IS R FAGOT! LOLOLOLOLOL!!!11'

Now, can we please move on, preferably away from debating whether the petition is pointless or not?

Well editing the petition itself will probably once again invalidate it, (unless he gets permission from the folks who signed) and even cutting out the flames and accidental multiple entries probably won't do cause Jack can ask that the whole thing be submitted, showing tampering.

Now I agree that there are a lot of serious posts on it, and that many gamers are upset with this man's tactics, but that's the thing... in spirit a petition is an excellent move, in actuality....

That's why I said I'd be willing to affix my signature to a petition to disbar JT, but not this one in particular. If you write a more suitable one or find one, let me know and I'll put my mark, ASAP and encourage others to do the same.

But... uh tell me... what exactly should we debate about on a thread whose topic is " Get Rid of Jack Thompson (web petition) "?

Like maybe suggestions that a well written, more suitable petition be made out to the Governors of the Florida Bar re:  The removal of Mr. Thompson's permission to practice Law perhaps?

Then why not grab a pen and do it?
Yeesh.

Anyway, if there's anything this argument has accomplished, it's de-railing this thread to the point of no return.
Sign the petition if you want folks, it's still going to be here. Locked.
And Gambitt, minor warning for sass.
