I apologise I must have confused the dates for the one that was started but never done and the lynch version. Which is, in my opinion better than the miniseries.
The mini series did not actually explain much of what was going on, was mostly "plastic looking eye-candy" (very pretty but too sterile) and, by including the almost complete storyline of the book became so complicated most casual watchers were unable to follow it, even though it became many hours longer than the movie. The original movie was vastly different to the book, but explained more of what was going on, looks "not as pretty" but for much of it more "real" and is, quite simply a better told story.
Children of Dune miniseries was, complete @ss. They merged two books, did not explain a thing, counted on cult following, deviated from the story, and left out the best and most important parts of the books.
