The X1900 card will be released early next year , rumours say it has 48 pixel processors and will be built on an 80nm or 90nm process , the architecture may be more similar to that of the Xbox 360 video chip with its unified shading method
ie. No dedicated vertrex or pixel shaders, rather a generic shader pipeline that can do both, though slightly less efficiently, but typically they are smaller thus you can cram more in .
Since the pipeline can now do anything , you can balance load better so no processing power is wasted, if you need more vetrex power , more pipelines can be dedicated to vertrex processing , if the scene rendered is pixel shader intensive , more can be dedicated to pixel shading , thus the architecture is more efficient and flexible in the long run if properly used.

I do! lower prices for their cheaper cards, forcing nvidia to add another top card, and drop their lower card prices too - la di da!

now if that kinda competition would JUST hit the cpu market too...

Actually the X1900XTX (which apparently is the official name) will be a 7800GTX 512 Killer. It has 16 pixel pipelines but 48 vertex shaders and will be clocked at around 600MHz Core and 1700-1750MHz Memory. Its already in test beds and its been said (without breaking pplz NDAs) that it will end up significantly faster than the 7800GTX 512 cards in most instances. G71 is the competition for this card and will be released after the X1900XTX is launched at the end of THIS month. The expected price is about the same as the X1800XT was priced so expect to see anywhere between 600 to 700USD. But it will be the fastest card for a while. It's codename is R580 and will be simultaneously launched with RD480 which is the crossfire chipset to match it. Also all X18xx+ series cards feature ATI's AVIVO which is hardware media encoding which so far benchmarks have proven to be up to 50% faster than ANYTHING Nvidia can offer. So think about it. Oh also the card will be cooler than the X1800XT and its on 90nm process.

HMM i could see myself buying a card like that, but what good is a card like that if yuh doh have a good PC to support it. So what i want to know is, what are some system specs that will be suitable for house such a powerful pice of hardware?

For a card like this, it's going to be faster than the x1800xt, ONLY IF THE GAME REQUIRES MORE PIXEL PROCESSING FUNCTIONS.

Memory isn't tooo much faster - so it would bottle on memory at high res similar to the older 1800xt - if your res is high enough, then even a 3200+ would be fine. you can always raise video quality - af/aa etc. you can always find ways to decrease load on the cpu - turn down shadow detail, particle effects seems to make the biggest impact.

Some of you may wonder why the card is sporting 48 shaders and 16 pipes.
The pipe generates texture - ATI's research into gaming shows them that they need a 3:1 ratio in pixel processing power : texture processing.

whether or not this is true for games, or justa result of the limits of their capability remains to be seen.

Nvidia's stance has been textures are important and their cards should continue to have higher ratios.

So welcome to bottleneck hell - where it's not just a card that's going to bottleneck you, but a part or one aspect of a part of the card that's causing a slowdown.

So then what would i be looking for if i got a nvidia as opposed to an ATI card? So what ur saying is that Nvidia has a better chance of maintaining "environments" better than ATI? And Ati just has an edge on TRiggered animation?

not at all - it deepends on what the game developer decides to use. If the game is relying on polygon structure, with tons of texture overlays, the nvidia based card can surpass the ati card. If the game is extremely shader oriented - say like chronicles of riddick on 2++ settings - then the ati card can pull an advantage (though riddick was openGL, and while ati got better, it still has a bit to go).

What did you mean by triggered animation? shading pixel processing would be stuff like flame effects, rain, HDR and bloom.

For the most part, i think ATI may have the ratio right - may change in the future though.

Yeah thats what i meant (n00b here) but then what u stated there means that its a lot harder tochoose a graphic card now , depending on the game u like, but that still doesnt mean that the game wont look good right?

at the moment, it's just the same actually. remember halflife2 and doom3? both cards have gotten better at each, and NO game devepoper would developgames, that only run comfortably with just half the cards out there.

Well I don't have a link that can show benchies but it's been stated that the R580 aka X1900XTX will be able to process as much as 1.1 Teraflops (for the noob that's operations per time unit). In any event ppl with test samples as apparently these things are in mass production building up to the launch, are saying that it is faster than 7800GTX in most cases, but there were possibly some where 7800GTX would still hold its own. So Overall this card will probably be of better value than 7800 GTX 512 (esp with AVIVO). It will blow away all current games easily will have a crossfire master to go with it as well as a AIW version soon to come and will in most cases be faster.. in some ALOT faster (over 50% apparently). So let the wars continue.

YEs the Return of the ATI... MWAAHAHAHAHAH well from the sounds of things, this should keep ppl busy for a really long time, get one of the newer cards out there now, u wont need anything else for a good while. But how many years until we may need to beef up our cards again? I say at least 5 years, using consoles as the measuring mechanism, cant seem to see me having to buy a card in the next 3 years...

Well right therein lies your mistake... the life-cycle of a video card is usually tied to the system. Which for all intents and purposes is 3 yrs. Sure after 5 yrs you'll be able to play a few of the new games like say my Geforce Ti200 can play warcraft III and you can even play it on perhaps a 8500 Radeon. But from the time u step up to Doom 3 and the like... well doh bother. It depends on the game developers alot too. You see ATI and Nvidia are like rabid wolves snapping at eat other ALL the time. As long as they keep spitting out a new gen car every 4-6 months or so, game houses will continue to push teh envelope with what tech they have. SO like UT2007 will blow our current mind, but it will prolly frail to UT2009 kinda thing. Consoles sad to say are the safest bet in terms of longevity. But ur right ur PC has other uses and can upgrade. Bottom line is, get a GOOD system NOW and it will last safely 2-3 years. It wilL FUNCTION to as much as 7 but doh expect to be ringing out those details in games.

not really - if you want to play nw games, a new console wont support it.

The 9700 is still a good card today - there are better options, but it still gives the performance close to a 6600GT.

you wont get all the details in games, but that's where the strength of the pc is in - you can cut down what makes the card run slow, and get optimal results for your system.

A console can play every game made for it perfectly, but there is no increase in quality, other than making better use of the hardware. That's not a plus. That's a limitation. If you buy a card that's more powerful than you need (but still a good price/performance ratio) - that's leeway, and future expandability.
