Arena 2006 suggestions

I didn't go... though from what i hear it had lots of problems ranging from crashing pcs to overloaded power systems .... Also the timing was bad , men have exams , school and work still ! Here are some of my ideas for the next big event , if it is hosted at all :
1. Have it in early december , school out , men taking holiday... more attendance ...
2. Set up and stress test the systems a day before the event, don't allow BYOC as to prevent the building's electrical system from overloading... Though since we use cafe machines for this , cafe's will loose an extra day's business.. not too applicable .
3. Possibly keep the PC's in their respective cafe's, have TSTT run a 10mbit optic fibre line to the location and host the SERVER's there , hooked up to big screens so people can see , this gets rid of the problem of cafe's loosing money and eletrical systems overloading , alot more space for other events etc. But requires alot of technical expertise and bandwidth... Each cafe would need 1mbit at least for 10 men to be playing at the same time .
4. Use a pile of laptops and wi-fi.. this will get rid of the power restrictions and likely the lappies would be donated by a company for the duration so cafe's won't need their machines moving around....
Any more ideas ?

Umm don't have a suggestion but more of a Comment.
Arena ......was a good idea....a beautiful one in fact, but it could have been managed a lot better, probably it was a lack of foresight or something i dunno.I know Toppa tried, Baego tried, Neo tried and the other cyber cafe owners and members tried but too much shit happened too fast. I guess we will all learn from the event and Arena next year will be much much better.
My only suggestion is that you should probably only have the finals at the stadium. The preliminaries should be at the different cafes.....give everyone a chance to play everyone like a league and the winners of the different leagues and divisions should advance to the finals.
One complaint though......ah vex de COD Tournament eh come off dread.........cause I AM THE GREATEST COD PLAYER IN THIS COUNTRY AND I DIDN'T GET TO PROVE IT!!! ALL ALYUH PUNKS GET AWAY !

true a series of prelim matches would have been good , have them in agaust holidays .... knock out enough men to need only about 20 machines on the big day would help alot . Also alot more men will get a chance to be fragged... and more time for more games *cough counterstrike*cough BATTLEFIELD 2 !!! UNREAL !!! WARHAMMER!
Plus it would have been great to air it on TV on all local channels live, the koreans have several channels devoted to gaming alone , why can't we have one show a year?

Yeah boy trini. Pressure iwmc.
Power problems galore. They were persistent and seriously haunted the entire PC leg of the event.
There were a few crashing PCs but that was expected given the number of systems (80 in total). Remember, these all came from GLs used by the public. Can't expect all to run smoothly. That was less of an issue.
1) Having it during the school holidays would be great. Trouble is getting the venue. You have to book these places almost a year in advance if you hope to get a date of your liking. Next year we will be sure to make the booking as early as possible to get a sweet date.
2) We had Thursday night and Friday carded for testing but thanks to the National Holiday on Thursday, we were unable to do so. The tent / tables & chairs people never showed up. Off in fits of jubilation in St. James no doubt.
Football fete idmc.
So there we were, stuck without accomodations to do any setup or testing.
BYOC spots could still be accomodated so long as they replaced units that were already setup. So the grand total of machines remained at 80. (A minimum of 64 being retained for the event, leaving 16 byoc)
A dread electrician should be on hand to ensure nothing starts draining the system too heavily.
3) lol @ 10mbit from TSTT to connect the GLs
4) lol @ laptops and wifi.
Love the intent of this thread.
Will throw up other suggestions as they come to me.
Attached is a picture of a main electrical component from Arena that wtfpwned us. Meltdown to craw.

Okay personally I was gleeful with this idea. I mean a local E3, THAT ROCKS!!! However as to be expected problems arose. Now I really don't agree with the BYOC for any tournament, I gives people with beasts an advantage over people who have to use the cafe PCs.
Next the olad addage: "So much to do, so little time," I really think the league idea mentioned is this thread earlier is the best way to go. Also for the Halo tornaments the screens should be opposite each other and no spectators except those who are there for the specific teams. Cause there was abig discrpancy during the solo tournament about a spy.
Have the "Free PLay" and tornament areas separate so the confusion of whether you are watching a tournament or just some guys playing around is annoying.
Limit the number of tournaments I mean how many tournaments you all were trying to have in 3 days.
I had fun and seeing as it was the first the few short comming were forgiveable. It's like they say. Live and learn, then get Luvs.

Yeah, but we had that similar vision.
This wasn't just a tournament, but also a trade fair and exposition.
The nations leading digital entertainment shops had their booths and wares on display.
A Trini E3.
Though I think we missed that message in the marketing efforts. The tournament aspect seemed to come across as the primary motif to most of the attendees.

Ok seems that there were alot of "professionals" around but some actions taken by the persons present made me wonder. I maybe a bit vexed and I need to get this off my chest before continuing my studies. Please not the Quotes on the professionals, some ppl should loose their wok for this nonsense.
Hey i'm just a yr1 elec student, but I can tell you that you don't need a trained electrician present to do a load test and to examine the breaker box before plugging in PCs. Daisy chaining strip connectors? and OMG different versions games, want suggestions? get ORGANIZED, use a calendar mark of events possible calamities etc. I tried to help but lets just say the person driving the car was using cuss words to describe his feelings.
Summary Less hands more brains.

Yes you do need a trained electrician present when handling something like a generator.
As well as connecting 80+ PCs, Consoles, TVs, Projectors and other electronics in a place not designed for same.
We said that all along but never got one. Talk is cheap.
Next time, we need a paid professional on hand to handle it from the get go.
The games were to be synchronised in version on Friday but that could not happen due to the National Holiday throwing everything back a day.

Heres an idea , Laqtel and digell are using Nortel CDMA technology which can provide several mbits of bandwidth and act as a WAN , you could use that to link the internet cafe's together in the POS area..... Plus if they have a fibre optic backbone , likely it would be through TSTT and men on DSL could participate from home/ cafe's across the country with low pings. .
Its alot easier for men living toco , grande , point fortin etc. to stay home / go to an internet cafe/ go by a friend with dsl than to go to POS for arena....
plus with a little coaxing you can get it done free or at least very cheaply by promiting whatever ISP is doing the WAN / internet connection at the event .

Trini, your ideas are nice but not practical. The sponsers need people to come out, having them stay at home doesn't help them out at all.

It is not practical for the Arena event itself but it is practical for the cafes and the gaming association.
This is precisely what greendot should have delivered for us but didn't.
If they can achieve that we will have gaming nirvana on the island.

Well I would think that the whole idea of the torny would be to bring gamers together on a personal , face to face level that is an have them battle it out with each other…make new friends create friendly rivalry etc.
A good question to ask is who would cheaters or suspected cheaters be dealt with this time around, hmmmm…cuz that was partly the reason for sof taking as long as it did. Well I personally hate sof now lol but if it’s going to be in arena 2006 maybe it should come after cod, or on separate days…hummm ok lets list the options
1) sof on one day cod on another
2) sof and cod time share, cod for an hr or so then sof
3) sof and cod prelims on..lets say fri and sat, then the two finals on sun
Anyone else has ideas?

Zuse.
You do know that SOF was scheduled for Saturday and CoD for Sunday? Two separate days.
Severe power problems on Saturday caused SOF to run over into Sunday.
There were no "cheaters" in SoF as far as we are concerned. There were complaints but no one was ever found to be cheating. We actually had 5 people stationed to look at the screens of the cheaters for an entire match.
They won, 5 - 1, without a single suspicious act.
Other than that, good post.

ite first id like tah say big up must go to baego,an the whole gatt crew for putting on a good show at the stadium last weekend.....but i hada admit dat dere were real flaws goin on like d sof tourney and d cod NEVER happened at arena problems which i hope that would b fixed in time for next arena...but the idea of havin it in december is a really good idea like sum 1 said bout ppl havin exams i also believe that many ppl wud prefer to have it at this time so that there would be bigger attendence and more sweatage......but other than that it was a good show hopefully by arena 2k6 it wud be better.
