Sony showed off Playstation 3s at CESConsumer Electronics Show 2006 But the boxes were emptyBy Charlie Demerjian: Tuesday 10 January 2006, 12:17THE PS3 WAS at CES after all, but it was only a mockup. It looked good, very good, but if you dug under the surface, it came up hollow. The good part is that they were shiny, and that is about it.The problem is that people working on PS3s tell me that it is far from done. Several companies are hip deep in hardware debugging as you read this. Not that it is hugely surprising, after all, it isn't out yet, but one would expect that the hardware is nearly finalized and the bulk of the work is on the games right now.PS3 mockupsNope. Both are far from done. The evidence was quite clear at the keynote, there wasn't even a live demo of the box, something that Sony would kill to show right now to cut MS off at the knees. Instead they had pre-rendered video, oh yay, that is going to strike fear in the hearts of Redmond dwellers. Now, if Sony fixes the bugs tomorrow, due to the time it takes to push a spin through the fabs, you won't see final PS3 silicon until March, April for boards and consoles in small quantities. Add another month for ramp up, and you are talking May for availability if absolutely nothing goes wrong.Sources have told us that this rosy scenario is at odds with the work going on right now, expect debugging to go on for quite a while yet. Add minimum 4 months to the end date, and you have a possible release time. The long and short of it is, don't expect a PS3 before E3, and even that is a very long stretch.
But i would also consider a Nintendo revolution , it will be the slowest , but the cheapest console , backward compatible with all my Snes and N64 favourite games , DVD support, and them VR headsets .. i may screw sony and nvidia and give into my fanboy self and get a Nintendo .
the PS3 may not cost 500 US , but it will cost more than consoles previously have , this time it IS a supercomputer , or at least an uber workstation
Fellas b4 i vote i would really like to see the controller 4 the ps3 first...
What is making the PS3 sell for 4 bill is the Blue-Ray technology. Very cool stuff. I see that they taking infront before infront take them. The PS2 only had a 4X DVD reader and that took a toll on the system (burnt out lenses etc). This time they having the upgrade right there. This should be interesting to see.
well this is real balls! "A PATENT may allow Sony to ensure that no game would be playable from any console other than the one in which it was first read.
Truly innovative? Not quite so sure about that. Let's look at the GameCube. Most radical title will be something like Donkey Konga. How many of you all play that? Better question, how many of you own the custom controller for it?
.the porn industry is backing blu-ray
The release of Sony's highly anticipated PlayStation 3 may not occur in the U.S. until the holiday season of 2006, analysts say. Furthermore, in what could be potentially damaging to the gaming console's overall sales, the number of titles available may be far less than competitor Xbox 360.
