New machine in a new city
« on: October 28, 2005, 01:31:24 AM »
Well peeps, I finally made the move to Calgary, Alberta...that's in Canada for those of us who are geographically defficient... :P

I ordered my parts from newegg.com like any other good Trini on a budget :) Had them shipped to my aunt in Florida and then picked them up during my layover between flights...talk about timing immc! The bigger items like case, speakers and monitor were picked up at a local shop in Calgary.

Here's the list:

DFI LANParty UT nF4 Ultra-D
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (Venice core)
2GB (2x1GB) OCZ PC3200 RAM
eVGA 256MB GeForce 7800GT CO
2x 160GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 SATA 3.0Gb/s NCQ
BenQ DW1640 16x DVD Burner
NEC 3500A 16x DVD Burner (only piece of my old machine that I took with me)
Enermax Whisper II 535W Power Supply
Antec SLK3000-B ATX Mid Tower Case
Logitech MX518 Mouse
Microsoft Digital Media Pro Keyboard
Samsung SyncMaster 997MB 19" CRT
Logitech X-530 5.1 Speakers

Gonna follow the Benchmarking thread that Synth posted, and drop some numbers in here when I'm done.

I also plan to conduct a lil RivaTuner on that gfx card to try to unlock the pipes...hopefully we'll get a before and after for the benchies, but I doubt cos I'm impatient, and will try to unlock it in a few mins :P

Oh...forgot to mention the inet connection that I'll soon have, which will be the same package as the one by my uncle's place which I'm using right now...a 5mbit line for $38.95 Canadian per month! Put dat in yuh pipe and smoke it TSTT!!! :D

SLI is a definite thought...but it won't be anytime soon...fortunately tho, now with the new 81.85 drivers and above, you can pair up any 2 cards, of the same level (2 GTX or 2 GT for example) and they don't have to be the same make, manufacturer, bios, de nada...I saw a nice article over at HardOCP about it (http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=ODY5)...SLI has really matured now. Hell, he even paired up a factory-overclocked card from eVGA with a stock card from MSI and it worked fine! I new it was only a matter of time till they got that going...definitely makes it easier to go SLI.

That was my main reason for going with the Ultra board...the 2 PCIe slots are there for if ever I get the inclination (and the spare cash!) to get a second card.

I had actually originally intended to get a 4000+ CPU, but that would have meant going with a GeForce 6 family card...and prolly just 1GB of RAM. But after reading countless articles on the 7800 GT, I decided that I had to have one in my rig :) As a result, I ended up scaling back on the processor to save some cash and throwing that directly at my GPU budget, with the left over allowing me to go to 2GB RAM as well...not a bad tradeoff I think.

indeed not a bad trade off... but amd still sucks so hard lucks dere.

Yeah there is a thread in hardware and tweaking or software about the 81.85 drivers allowing sli with any 2 sli capable card.

I mean, how 1337 is nvidia for making such a product that a driver update that could do such a thing.

DAMN @ those scores

that machine + that 5mbit internet connection is a gamer's wet dream.

Pressure for us w1ntry.

My rig is even worse than yours in the standings. 6600GT just isn't the manly card it used to be with scores like those on the table.

I just realised I got more excited  when I saw your bandwidth screenie...

but anyways, yeah, that's a real sweet rig.
LOL @ Baego "gamer's wet dream" Indeed

can't you tell us how much it set you back (minus the last 7 items on your list of course) only cause I'm interested in a similar setup eventually (and from the same site no less) On second thought, forget item#6 - DVDRW, just the first 5 items... include shipping cost if possible

It really does make more sense to splurge on the GPU and perhaps a 64-bit dual core CPU... followed by 2GB of RAM and the rest.

Like a man could host the much desired BF2 servers, once pings are acceptable

As requested...here's the damage:

DFI LANParty UT nF4 Ultra-D - $128
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (Venice core) - $219
2GB (2x1GB) OCZ PC3200 RAM - $206.44
eVGA 256MB GeForce 7800GT CO - $369
2x 160GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 SATA 3.0Gb/s NCQ - $90 each

The shipping which also covers a power supply, mouse and the BenQ burner came up to $22.30 ...and it could have been cheaper, but I chose UPS 3 day shipping to make sure it got there on time.

lol @ Baego :P

lol @ kaizen crying :D

The nice thing with the eVGA's though is the lifetime warranty...to sweeten the deal even more, their warranty covers damage from you overclocking the card!! How kick ass is that??

Old machine is still available yes, you can PM me for more info.
