War of the WOrlds
« on: July 04, 2005, 07:51:15 AM »
Went to see this movie Friday.

I can say the special efx are fantastic, as well as the sound efx. This movie is the only movie that actually SCARES you with an alien invasion. Independence Day (and well, i cant think of anything else really) always had you going "woah.....that mad" or "o geeeeewwwwwwwd" when you see an air strike.

This movie does it to you HALF LIFE style. Tom Cruise is one of the many people who are trying to make heads or tails of the situation and figures it out as it goes along. You really get to witness the attack FIRST HAND and from a regular bystanders point of view.

The movie is great in most aspects. THey recreated the tripods just like the classic HG Wells novel did way back when. SOme scenes are shown in the movie from the novel too.

but i HATED the last 20 seconds of the movie. Spoler below to see why

********************************SPOILER***************************************************

You mean to tell me that they bury tripods under the ground for so much years, that they planned the attack, that they WATCHED us evolve and THEN ATTACK with full force.........BUT THEY CANT BREATHE THE F*CKING AIR? What.........THE F*CK!! I mean someone in that alien army intelligence REALLY do sh!t!!!

YEs yes i KNOW it follows the book. But dread, that is then and this is now. I appreciate the book back then, and the story. But you making a MODERN DAY sci fi movie and you end it in 20 seconds like THAT? The ending was rushed, no resolution, no meaning. Just........BLAH.

********************SPOILER END***********************************************************

ALl in all except for that part, i was pretty happy with the movie.

10 points for special effects

0 points for story and plot.

At least in Half Life 2, Gordon Freeman was a nuclear physicist with a clue and a bad ass suit to help him show the alien invaders what human ass kickin' was all about.

Tom Cruise's character was a wshb dad dealing with family issues to the backdrop of an alien invasion. Obviously his entire family had a couple 4 leaf clovers in their pockets, considering the amount of luck displayed in the movie. That's right, not conduction, or talant...just luck.

steups

And yeah, those aliens got to be damn stupid if bacteria/virii weren't taken into consideration. Observing us going to the hospital and catching colds for the past 3000 years should have tipped them off. You could develop space travel and uber machines of destruction but can't make anti biotics. Boo for them.

I would also hope that they didn't send their entire race in one fell swoop. So that means it is only a matter of time before they develop an antidote or a proper space suit / armor that is sealed (even we have this down to a science already) and return to pwn all our base and study the bacteria and micro organisms up close and personal.

Spielberg said this movie was not about story or plot, it was just about character interactions. I think it delivered there.

That scene was pretty damn cool. I feel laertes have good talk there. I mean changing the plot may make the movie better, but fans would say its not the same and trash it. I guess you cant win both ways. PErsonally i think it coulda do with the change'

Grasshopper.......I sholdnt have to hear what a director has to say to appreciate his movie. If you have to get a synopsis of the films angle before you watch the movie then something wrong. And if i want to watch a GOOD movie with character interactions i would watch CRASH. That is a first class movie.

yeah, coulda do with the change

or dramatize it.

Show them being prepared for the disease and bacteria, but somehow it mutated and got out of control and still wtfpwned their base.

very acceptable and should have pleased both parties.

biological warfare idmc.

maybe even hype it up by having some dread "dr. death" criminal scientist released from prison to "cook up" a special biohazardous cocktail to deal with the invaders.

marry that with some ingenious delivery mechanism, since traditional projectile weapons weren't working.

Maybe having it drop like misty rain from B2 bombers.

I dunno,

something like that, would have worked in 2005.

my $3.45

Come to think of hit....who are the ppl who screen test the movies actually? Please don't tell me its the usual special effect fanboys these studios use as interns.

No care for plot or acting....over reliance on special effects.  6/10

Well I felt that as the focus of the movie before actually reading about that statement from Spielberg. especially the bond that is displayed between father and daughter. That what this movie was all about imho. That said, yeah its void on the story.

<POSSIBLE SPOLIER>
Why couldn't an advanced alien race be brought down by something frowned down upon as inferior? Just look at a certain economic superpower invading a certain middle eastern country. We all thought that woulda been over a long time ago.

nothing is wrong with bacteria conducting de scene.

The problem is in the lame way it was portrayed.

A greater dramatization of the bio warfare that was going on would have been appreciated.

Instead, it was quickly swept under the carpet and story closed off.

Grasshopper d00d. It look like you analysing this movie too much. This movie is straight up alien takeover with special effects. Yuh want to talk theory in a US movie and such hit on MATRIX and the Trilogy. Plenty to talk bout there..and i more than willing to oblige.

And I know people who criticise EPISODE 1 Star Wars for implimenting super power elements in it as well. The UN and their opinions. Everything can be looked at in whichever way. But i mean, thats not what this movie is about

I really don't think that anyone could be pleased about that ending... That ending was droped on us like a tonne of crix! I don't mind the whole bacteria theory, but how it is they introduce it like last 5 minutes of the movie, that was real mess.

There was apects of the movie which would have made it a really really good horror movie. When the first alien machiene was comming out of the ground, and the front part of the church was moving, that was really very demonic and cool! Another one was when the girl was gonna use the bathroom and all the bodies came floating down the river, THAT WAS UBER COOL! Another one I could think of now is when Tom Cruise when and killed the man, and like had his daughter block her ears and then he close in the door, that was real mad!

I never read the book, but it had to be alot better than that. The play time for that movie was about 2hrs. They could have made it into a longer movie to explain it alot better. Cause at the end of the movie, I was like...EH? It had too many questions on my mind:

How the son got to boston?
Why boston so important?
What was the point of the red weed things?
Why did the aliens even wanted to kill people?
How in the hell the car started back to work?
Why that little girl so friggin annoying!?
How I getting home?
Does it have anything to eat home?

Well the last two has nothing to do with the movie...but you know what I mean.... The movie had alot of potential....but Could have been ALOT better....Maybe in another lifetime when they resort to redoing movies and movies which come out the other day would be considered "old" it would be done better, cause Speilberg Really isnt known for doing over movies....

Didnt he say change the alternator or something. Only a certain part was fried.

All these questions were irrelevant. The only answer i want was why it had to end so. I liked not knowing everything. Its what made the movie more intense. Sh!t just HAPPENING andyou dunno why. The only thing to explain was how the aliens get kill in a BETTER way. Like how they realized that they had no sheilds when Cruise saw the birds on the tripods.

How the son got to boston?

Oh my jeez, this pissed me off. I mean these blockbuster action things always have to have one guy go and do something completely asenine, and magically get away with it. I thought it woulda been much cooler if he died. I mean he was just begging to die. Just kill him already.
