lol
yeah, Nintendo is becoming the Apple of the console industry.

Niche product, niche market with their support and software being the mainstay.

If they could lock down brands like pokemon, yugioh and naruto and deliver 'em consistently and of the usual high quality, they'll be around for decades.

Nothing wrong with that.

It won't get them back into everybody's living room, that's for sure...

Is there any word from Nintendo on what their target market is? Are they truly aiming for the MS / Sony console space?

@NEO

i understand you statements and i did not disagree with em

my main point is Nintendo will never be able to compete on the same level with sony or M$ (especially if it boils down dollar for dollar).....Nintendo's base can never be shaken  and unlike sega can never be killed, while sony and M$ because of their money trees are practically immortal.

Sony and M$ jumping around and beating their chest and snarling etc....thats not nintendo's style and it never has been

...................................................................................................

no dis but microsoft's 360 seems like a brainless muscular buff weightlifter boastin about his power
Sony is like the sexy sleek blonde that has all they guys eating out of her palms
while nintendo is like....um...a glasses wearing, misunderstood person thats is ridiculed because he thinks differently

the variety is good and we'll see how nintendo fairs this time around (not through the eyes of a sony or a M$ but through the eyes of a  nintendo where profits are concerned)....right now i just want more info on the rev

sometimes i wonder if console gaming itself will be split in two in the next gen...

I am not worried about nintento at all...Their consoles have the most notorious exclusive games. Oh and as far as hardware specs. goes...it shouldn't be the only characteristic to degrade or promote a particular console...but to be used as a means to determine the platform that would cost the most. However the quality of the games and the capatability of the hardware with those games should be used to as a means in determining the best console. Take for example the ati radeon x850 xt platinum edition and the nvidia 6800 ultra video chipsets...the x850 theoritically consists of better performing hardware  components than that of the 6800 yet when the 6800 runs doom 3 on an equilivant system as the x850 at the same resolution, a faster frame rate is acheived by the 6800...oh and not to mention the ps2 hardrive and how many of its games it supported. If it is one thing I have observed with nintendo in the last couple years is that they design their consoles modular so that you can add other perpherials to the console if you require additional functions....so you tend to own only what you need. Alot of people were dissapointed with nintento's presentation towards their next generation console due to the limited details that were available but I think we should not judge them as yet but instead be patient until nintendo is ready to publish more info on their next generation console, game controller and game titles.
Righteousness can only be acheived by one who has good intentions and a non-biased perspective...hence the only alignment for a true paladin is neutral good and not lawful good.

Nintendo's Revolution is financial seppuku.

They'd stab themselves and say we give, you can have Yoshi.

Seriously though, in terms of revolutionary, they have to come god-like to do something that was done on an entirely new level or something entirely new and extraordinary period.  Maybe something like, putting Mario in tekken.  Or maybe a customizable mario.  Perhaps Mario in the Hood: Life through the pipeline.  How about Mario Payne?  Mario Gear Solid?  Devill May Mario?

This more than just biased hate-filled blabber here.  Nintendo has been living too long on old ideas.  I admit they have worked over the SNES era but even I was expecting them to move off to newer things with the N64.  Back then I didn't even know about ps1 yet and I disliked the goofy games on it regardless of how game-hungry I was.  How many years can one tolerate jumping on stuff and collecting coins and eating shrooms?

This is a day and age where children worldwide grow up too fast and the need for such a system is dropping drastically.  Anyway, I'm a PS3 kinda guy from the get go but still I want to see what Nintendo can do to live up to the hype it has created for itself.  My decision is already made yes, but I shine the spotlight on the "Revolution"  I hope they come correct though, even as much as I've grown to dislike Mario and a few other characters they stand for, I hope they make it through alright.

From Nintendo as quoted by Reuters:

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -     Nintendo Co. Ltd. plans to announce the price, launch date and other details for its next-generation game console by the end of the year, its president said on Thursday.

Nintendo earlier this week unveiled its console, code-named "Revolution," and said it will launch in 2006, giving users access to more than 20 years of games from past Nintendo consoles.

The Revolution, roughly the size of three stacked DVD cases, will feature wireless controllers, built-in wireless Internet access, and an add-on for DVD playback.

"We plan to give details on when we will launch it, what the price will be, what the controller will look like and how games can be played on it by the end of the year," said Nintendo's Satoru Iwata, speaking to Reuters at the Electronic Entertainment Expo annual trade show, known as E3.

Some gamers and industry analysts had criticized Nintendo for providing sparse details on the new machine, comparing it to     Sony Corp (SNE.N). and Microsoft Corp.'s unveiling of slicker, graphic-intense next-generation machines.

But Iwata said he didn't want to tip his hand to rivals.

Iwata said the new console is aimed at customers who hate clutter and find current games and the controllers used to play them to be confusing and difficult

In the past we tried to entice new users with increasingly sophisticated graphics, improved sound, and complex storytelling, but to a big extent, I think we've pursued that as much as we can," said Iwata.

"Right now, game consoles are important for the game fan, but for the rest of the family, it's just a piece of nuisance that's loud and eats up electricity ... We want to create games for people who haven't played games but are curious about them."

He said the company was already talking to third-party game publishers about including their old Nintendo-compatible games in the downloadable archives.

That would allow users to play original versions of "Pac-Man" and "Donkey Kong," for instance.

While pricing had not been decided, he said the company could charge users per game, sell pre-paid cards in stores, or give some games away as part of promotions.

Too little, FAR too late, Nintendo.

Iwata said the new console is aimed at customers who hate clutter and find current games and the controllers used to play them to be confusing and difficult.

This, coming from the people who made the controls for the N 64 and the Gamecube?
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

...man. Now that was just funny.

I'm sorry, justin, but, if anything, that report,(in particular, that first sentence,) just emphasizes just how backwards Nintendo operates. Sony and X-Box go all out to show off at E3 and Nintendo decide to show what it's made of at the END of the YEAR? DAMN. I'd be halfway to owning a PS3 by then.

Better luck next time, Ninten-dopes. You're off to a REAL great start with the Revolution already.

hey hey I resent that bit about the N64.

Though the controller won't win any beauty contests, it is still one of the best controllers to play Street Fighter with!

(trust me on that, and trust all the people I beat in street fighter with it as well, lol)

IMO, the N64 controler was PERFECT for fps, but for all those other games, the controler didnt cut it.

Okay, okay, I'll take back that stab about the N 64 control, but, to be honest, I find the controls for Nintendo's consoles after the Super Nintendo most uncomfortable.

count fighting games as another strength of the n64 controller protojoe.

Only reason that remains a little know fact, is the total lack of good fighting games on it's native platform, the n64 console.

Take that puppy and hook it up to your PC, run some emulators and you'll experience glorious sho ryu ken wringing action. Street fighter never felt so good.

Ick. No thanks. Give me a PS2 control anyday.

And justin, you're just playing dense. We -NEVER- said we hated Nintendo, just what they are DOING.

Also....what in the blue heck does that whole statement about the perfect market have to do with anything? On top of that, you're dead wrong about the gaming industry being a perfect market. It's an IMPERFECT market, if anything. Take that from a person who got a distinction in Economics.

Yeesh. I don't know about the rest of you, but this thread is beginning to suck.
Other than Zard, I haven't seen ONE person put up a reasonable defense in favour of the Revolution.

This statement doesn't change the fact that Xbox 360 and PS3 will outsell the Rev by miles.  Spewing out stuff you read which isn't applicable makes me feel more sorry for the few fans Nintendo have left.

well... i was up till 3 this morning sweatin naruto on the gcn.
I believe iam going to purchase a gcn for this and a few other titles.

Zelda is going to own no doubt about it, metroid is going to own.

Their titles are the strong point of Nintendo indeed, but their games have NEVER EVER EVER suffered from a lack of power of the console. NEVER!
THe gcn is more powerful than the ps2 as is the xbox but no one seems to harp on that fact.

I think yall are being very trivial by sentencing the rev to death without knowing anything about its hardware, even though they are hinting about their software, which, once again, has always been their strong point.
*sigh*

I heard sword of mana is out, sequel to secrets of mana.
Iam gonna go get it.. Long live Nintendo.

You know, everyone is saying that PS3 and 360 is gonna sell oh so much, and its a whole lot better than Nintendo....That still isnt gonna stop them from playing it! All the ppl who was saying that gamecube is mess, all of them take a sweat on it at somepoint in time, and they enjoy it. I dunno why yulla saying that for. I'm not a Nintendo fan or anything (sony fanboy all the way ) But I for sure dont think that we should be counting them out..atleast not so early.

Just my two cents:

1) They always do. That's pretty much stating the obvious. :P

2) Gamecube may have the power, but they sure as hell ain't using it. The absence of on-line play just gives it a further kick in the crotch, as cross-platform gaming will see Nintendo users getting the short end of the stick. Deception, anyone?

3) The same can be said about people who support it. You guys know pretty much the same as we do - absolutely NOTHING. With that said, you can't say with unmost certainty that it will succeed. Besides which, look at the track record:

- N 64 vs. Playstation: PSone kicked its behind. No full motion video, lack of third party interest and refusal to adapt to the advantages of using CD-ROM? N 64 didn't stand a chance.

- Gamecube vs. Playstation 2 vs. X-Box - People don't even consider the Gamecube to be a bona-fide competitor of the latter two systems anymore. On-line play for the latter and none for the Gamecube further killed it in the standings. Besides, which of these are you more likely to see at a sweat? I don't know about you, but other than Super Smash Bros. Melee, the Gamecube has ZERO sweat potential. That, and the fact that it overheats like a bi-yotch.

So, Crixx, you have to understand.
Those of us who see nothing but grim tidings for the Revolution may not know anything about it, but the history of their past efforts (as well as their awkward strategy of releasing Revolution details now) paints is skeptics a not-too-pretty picture.

4) You seem to forget the part also where Nintendo casually mentioned the probability of losing third party support. I don't know about you, but the majority of the games that I play COME from third party developers. Mortal Kombat, Capcom vs. SNK 2, THOSE games. And if Nintendo were to really give these guys the boot, well....hate to say it, but Link and Metroid can kiss my behind. Buying a whole system just for games Nintendo makes while other  systems enjoy a bigger variety is like buying an entire box of Kleenex to wipe your glasses.

To me, Nintendo's bigger success stories lie in the handheld market, but even that's soon to be jeopardised because the PSP is ruling the DS's ass all over the American market right now. But that's another story for another thread.

strong points.

being a big nintendo fan, I must confess that I didn't buy a gamecube, nor had ever planned on buying a gamecube for myself until I saw the Naruto Ninja Taisen 3 game.

AWESOME. Nintendo is going to need more titles like this from it's third party developer base to get people to spend their money.

I've read in many places where guys say that single game is the only reason they keep their gamecube. High re-sweatability factor. Naruto iwmc.

I mean, once you've beaten metroid/zelda. You could have pretty much sold your box. As I did, when I beat Zelda on an N64 many years ago. Disposable console iymc.

In the days of Nintendo pwnage, you spent your money on one console and one console alone. A NES or a SNES. Nowadays, the competition is stiff and the average person will still just buy one. Pressura for Nintendo if they have any hopes of being that first choice without third party support.

Scary indeed, this.

I love 'em and don't ever want to see 'em fail, so here is hoping that Revolution does something revolutionary.

oh and one more thing. The GameCube is the most played system at our GL, all thanks to that Naruto game, which just goes to show, great games sells the hardware and not vice versa. Hardware is secondary once you've got awesome titles. Think we can safely say no argument there, which means we should all be more concerned with what titles Rev will have vs the components of it's innards.

Let me first explain something to the Nintendo haters that you do not realize. Nintendo owns 10 percent of the video game market. Given that the profits for the videogame market is in the billions Nintendo isnt going anywhere. Second thing, and most important, is that Nintendo totally dominates the kids market in videogames. THere is no equal.

Now to us older people we may not like nintendo, but strategically why should a company branch out of their field and invest money in a competitive market of the older crowd when they are completely dominating theirs? None really. They tried with a handfull of games and it did not work that well. Whether or not we like it (and some of us dont)Pokemon, Mario and Zelda going to sell untill the end of time. But i can say one thing. Nintendo is deffintiely the most innovative of the 3 competitors. As for the ROMs i cant give an unbiased opinion. I like the idea that you can have all your Nintendo games on one system and cary it around. The Rev is supposed to be the thickness of 3 dvd cases, and thats with everything. Now i know you all have your ROMS on your PC, and this is where my biased attitude comes in, i hate PC games. But their idea, trying to be unbiased as possible, is pretty good.

Now on to SONY. I hope you all realize that SONY's target is the teenage generation, most of you GATTers out there. SONY games may have some innovation but some of us out there who have been gaming since the early 80's and back may notice that the PS2 is pretty damn stagnant to us, this is gaming wise. However, SONY is not going to loose any money. There is a whole new generation of gamers out there and they will easily eat up the PS2 and PS3. To add to that the biggest argument for the PS3 is their online ability.

Every single company i spoke to said the same thing at E3 "SONY's online setup sucks" and they not joking. Its really a mess. Now their idea is not to force peopel to jump straight into the PS3 like MS is doing. Microsoft has abandoned production of XBOX games and have moved on to the 360. However SONY has announced 12 new titles by SCEA for the PS2 this year.

SONY is not trying to force people to use broadband either (which i think is rubbish). They give you the option of dialup and broadband. But from experience you dont want dialup on your console, it lame. Now the argument is sound. They concentrating on their main profits and maximising it, lets see if they can do that.

However the big thing is that SONY say they not telling people to jump into the next gen just yet but all over LA and E3 it have big WELCOME CHANG3 posters. Ironic.

The XBOX generation. I dont give f*ck all what ppl have to say about Microsoft. Their strategy to dominate the videogame market may have sounded like a joke 3 years ago. I guarantee at E3 this year not a soul had a bad thing to say about the 360 (besides Morgan, but daz ok is Morgan). The Target for Microsoft is those my age the 25-35 year bracket. Watch the MS conference on the E3 site, they SPECIFICALLY point out their target niche. Their LIVE program is absolutely top notch. And the 360 LIVE is even better. This time you can go online right out of the box. You buy the silver package from XBOX and never have to pay to go online again. BUT as usual MS like money so you goin to have to pay for downloads sometimes and such, which i think is crap.

Another thing with the 360. The system is compatible with MANY multimedia devices. You can play iPod, SONY walkman and even hookup your PSP to your XBOX360 and upload or download data.

According to the 3rd party companies. MS treating them like gold (in other words they kissin they @ss) and really giving them rope.

I was in the Zelda line with the creator of ACTION REPLAY (formally Gameshark) for 3 hours. These guys hack the living daylights out of games for a living. I asked him about MS his answer was plain "Man, NO ONE f*cks with microsoft again. If you try to do something without their permission they just BUY you company, chop it up and sell it" He mentioned a few companies, that have fallen prey to that.

Every system has to have a goal and a target niche. Nintendo targets the young audience, PS the adolescent and XBOX the older audience. That is their goal. It is shown in the exclusive games for each console.

Now personally couldnt care less about what any console. I getting all and done the story. I want to and pretty much may eventually HAVE to play all those games.
