The amd processor  is clocked lower, but does more work per clock than the intel , its about 9 bits/bytes or whatever per clock on the AMD , but 7 on the intel . The amd also has a much lower latency connection with its RAM , and faster L2 cache , so it will get alot of things done faster .
The p4 has more L2 cache, and more memory bandwidth ,so if the operation involves shuffling  around tons of data and not much actual processing , the P4 would win .
The P4's hyperthreading helps it multitask better than the AMD  in intensive  non gaming conditions , like running photoshop , surfing  ,listening to music, and copying  files over network .
Since most games don't even fill out 512mb of RAM  but involve lots of processing , AMD wins out    in all the games we play . But in cases like photo editing where a high res picture can eat up 2 gigs of RAM , and photoshop bieng able to make use of hyperthreading , intel will win .
For the  average user who doesn't need to render 3d and encode audio, and just surfs and types documents  get an AMD ... they are faster for what you do , cheaper , cooler , eat less power ...
For someone who does alot of intensive work like photo editing, and can afford  to cool a P4 , and buy an expensive power supply etc.... go with Intel .
 For a gamer... AMD ....
if i'm wrong about anything , tell me and don't complain !

crixx and a few others will tell you otherwise

'Prescott' is a p4 , 'winchester' is the athlon 64

steupsssssssssssss
LOOK AT THE PROPAGANDA GOOOD LORDDDDDDDDDDD

for like the millionth timeeeee

WHY DE @$$ ALL THE AMD PEOPLE DOES EVER COMPARE IS A PRESCOTT TO A A64????

Why not a flikkin Northwood to a athlon xp???????????????

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM???????

cause they dont want yu to know that the non prescott P4 comepletely ownzzzzzz everything amd has except for the damn A64.
ugh iam so sick of them with this thing, always want to compare apples to oranges. Steups.

Nonsense about afford to cool a P4 , when the only "hot" P4 is a prescott, they wouldnt tell you that though... NOOOO.

NORR WILL THEY LET YOU KNOW THAT ALL THE so called "ADVANCES" amd have made, are totally because of the stolen intel technology in their processors.

You know what, i through with these discussions until the amdites could admit they down falls, and not completely ignore them, and only big up the A64. biggest piece of stolen tech to date.

What's this?? Did a sad Intelite just speak those words???? OMG!!! He sees the light!!!! There you have it folks...my work here is done...I've made an Intelite admit that an AMD processor is SUPERIOR!!!! Wintry, get your mc in here and revel in the victory! :D

I'm curious as to why you keep bringing up the Northwood and AthlonXP processors tho...cos, and correct me if I'm wrong, most people who go out to buy a processor today, be it AMD or Intel, will buy the latest revision of said chips...no? Thus, it stands to reason that the Intelite would pick up a Pentium 4, which would more than likely turn out to be a Prescott core since that is the latest core with the most availability, and the wise man would pick up an A64...yes no?

And btw, the only propaganda being spread, is out your very mouth...namely, "stolen Intel technology"...get a clue...buy a vowel....do something....but come better than that! :P :D

if its the truth its not propaganda and iam speaking the truth about amd stealing intel tech.

And as i said, apples to oranges where the P4 and A64 concerned

and as i KEEP SAYING how come you completely ignore the comment about the northwood being superiour to the athlon xp??

WHy alyuh does always ignore that?

I talkin northwood vs athlon and alyuh ignoring me and talkin prescott vs A64. Like ah bunch ah damn politicians.

And for the record yu little amdite. Most INTEL followers will NOT go to a store and ask for a prescott, they will purchase the latest revision of the Northwood so stop yur incessant propaganda.

*drumroll* tada... jed, yuh take a 2 days off and a man done light up de scene with cpu wars oui. *revels in crixx admitting A64 superiorty*.. that aside, I shall conduct a brisk analysis of the Northwood vs. Barton (AXP). Now technologically speaking the Northwood has the same size L2 cache as the Barton (although L1 the Barton has 128k vs. 16uK or something so) The northwood was capable of freqs up to 3.2GHz I believe, however is as hot as the hotest Barton (3200+) at that freq. The Northwood did indeed perform better in games and video editing, whereas business whinstone and other office suite benchmarks were and still are owned by AMD (yes Barton included). In terms of worth, both Barton and Northwood were great chips with the 1ntel processor maintaining a noticeable lead in gaming (due to freq advantage at resolutions lower than 1024x768 inclusive). Memory wise the Northwood also won out with its 533 and 800MHz FSBs. That said the Barton still performs comparatively to a Northwood but at a much LOWER PRICE. When comparing the top level (at the time) AMD to 1ntel, AMD was always the better PRICE PERFORMER, whereas 1ntel was the more expensive slightly better performing chip. I give credit where credit is due, and back then the Northwood was the better performer but at a premium whereas AMD was a good performer at a GOOD PRICE. Also take into account the AXP was an aging technology, they basically revised the Athlon core over and over eventually reaching the Barton. It was a 4+ yr old tech. Whereas Northwood was not just a revision  but a core change built on previous tech.

So crixx I amdite tip my hat to intel for a job well done back then and of course to the Barton which was a worthy adversary and more cost effective alternative.

HOWEVER ON TO NOW, since de man did say UPGRADE as in looking at CURRENT TECH, Enter the A64 which u so rightfully said is the performance king (not in so many words I am sure but we know deep down ur an AMD fan). So dude, trini is head on here and the A64 is the way to go. As it is I still running meh Barton and it was an overclocking beast :) although soon i'll be on my A64 3500+ beast.... *smiles at crixx :p* AMD is the way to go over the past 1 1/2 yrs, and since u done a AMD man, why mess with a good thing?

the northwood was a damned good core , intel was foolish to throw it away completely in favour of the Prescott , they should have used the shrink to 90nm to make CHEAPER northwoods  and kept the pressies for a specific market , or skipped the Prescott altogether  since they have to go with a new architecture very soon anyway . Alot of northwoods used to reach 4ghz with decent air cooling , with a better silicon process they might have been able to make 5ghz stock chips .
The athlon XP was mostly inferior to the P4 northwoods , but by  a small margin ( in gaming...) , but  they usually sold for half the price or less, an athlon xp 2500 went for 80 US , while a 2.4ghz northwood  was 170 US...   I'm still running an athlon XP , which  i got for 85 US ( athlon xp mobiles ) and overclocked it well past Athlon XP 3200 speeds  ,  though my multi tasking performance is laughable compared to a P4 with HT  , it serves my purposes as a gaming rig, and occasional workhorse as  well .
For anyone building a gaming   rig  for right now , AMD is the way to go , with an athlon 64 3000 at 150  and the athlon 64 4000 at 480 US , while the 3.8ghz P4 goes for 650 US  and the 3ghz for 200     US , anyone who says intel is better for gaming is both a fool and a liar .
