Sony makes Vaio laptops that run Windows, do they not?

So why is a Microsoft console using BDs so 'logic-defying'?

Because of statements like this:

http://gizmodo.com/#!5645716/microsoft-blu+ray-is-going-to-be-passed-by-as-a-format

Microsoft has a massive axe to grind against Blu-Ray.

Sony doens't have a massive axe to grind against Windows.

I fully support the digital era personally but that is as some have said...still very far off.

Look @ Canada for example.
Those guys have an 80GB monthly cap on their internet speed of 1mb.
125GB cap on 25mbps
175go cap on 50mbps.
Also look at the prices they are paying.

Check the link:
http://www.rogers.com/web/Rogers.portal?_nfpb=true&_windowLabel=HiSpeedBrowse_1_2&HiSpeedBrowse_1_2_actionOverride=%2Fportlets%2Fconsumer%2Finternet%2Fbrowse%2FhiSpeedCableBrowse%2Fcompare&HiSpeedBrowse_1_2productID=WAVE&_pageLabel=INTER_HISPEED

We in Trinidad are theoretically ready for digital download due to our nice ISP offerings, but the bigger picture is:
The world isn't ready for fully digital download hence why a physical media will exist.
Digital release of all games simultaneously with Physical release will be the best way.
It's why I stated that Blu-Ray may be an option for the next generation.

Good lord @ the upload speed on those packages.

prices not attractive at all either, though I suppose it maybe cheap if you're getting a Canadian salary.

Any Canada based GATTers wanna sound off?

From what i've been reading online etc. (I might be migrating to Canada soon, hence the internet checking), Canadians are very dissatisfied with what they get up there.

Rogers is known to THROTTLE online gaming and has terrible pings in addition to the monthly caps. Due to some law there it is becoming a standard to introduce these monthly caps.
What's funnier is that Rogers is viewed as the "best" option up there for telecommunication where many people have switched to Rogers due to more problems on the competitors.

The best package I've found on a competitor is this:
http://teksavvy.com/en/res-internet.asp

Extreme Cable Pro: 15 Mbps down 1 Mbps   up  Unlimited   $54.95/month

The catch is, from May or June I believe they will be introducing monthly caps as well as they lease bandwidth from the big companies who wish to impose the limits.

So some countries, including one as big as Canada is taking a step backwards. The digital dream will take some time.

As for price, the general view of Canadians is that they pay ALOT for internet, which is true when they compare to the US and the world.
On their salary though, which is dollar for dollar with T&T, they can more than afford that compared to what we pay.

Yeah, Canadian telecom rapes and gouges customers, no doubt about it, which is what I alluded to in my previous post - there are special interest groups like openmedia.ca trying to bring this to the attention of the politicians ahead of the upcoming election so that consumers can get some sort of relief. They got a big win recently when they got the regulators to reverse the introduction of bandwidth caps (at least for now), and are trying hell hard to keep the issue in front of the politicians.

For a 15mbps package in Calgary, be prepared to shell out close to CAD$60. You can supposedly reduce that figure by bundling it with a phone service and/or tv service from same ISP. End of d day though, is jus more rape in yuh pwef. Canadians now beginning to open dey eyes to dis madness dat dey been goin through, and starting to fight back - hopefully something good will come of it.

But to address your question, is nuh so much about whether it affordable on a Canadian salary (which, to be honest, it is), but more about what choice do the consumers have really? All d ISPs chargin similar prices, so either take d rape here, or go across d street. Most people end up finding which bundle (internet/phone/tv) works out best for them, and going with that provider. In Calgary, it's typically Shaw (shaw.ca) or Telus (telus.ca).

Sony makes Vaio laptops that run Windows, do they not?

So why is a Microsoft console using BDs so 'logic-defying'?

Try to think outside the box a bit.
Das d best parallel you could draw to argue yuh point? No thinking in, or out, of boxes required here, wyatt pretty much said it - Microsoft nah want nuttin to do wit Blu-ray, and they are happy with the alternatives (DVDs and digital distribution), whereas Sony doesn't have that stance regards Windows (maybe it totally grinds their entertainment division though), and even if they did, wha dey go put on dey PCs? Linux?? OS X??? Be real, there is no alternative, unless dey wha have sales drop harder dan breadfruit. You self. Bettah dan dat.

A full decade away boy wyatt? Seems like a lifetime when you consider how quickly tech evolves. I agree that the retail channel is still huge for them right now, so yeah, switching to digital-only might not be the best choice just yet, but all in good time. Like apprentice say, making it available both in stores and online would be a good first step towards it.

You're right apprentice, Rogers has been found "traffic shaping", and recently, it's been adversly affecting customers who play WoW...

Canadian ISP Rogers Throttling 'World of Warcraft'
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2382720,00.asp

OpenMedia is once again at the helm trying to out Rogers as not playing by the rules, and the regulators (CRTC - Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) are taking note finally and starting to ask questions.

I cancelled my netflix account because of these things. we exceeded the BW limit last month.
I think we have a 5-6mbps DSL connection, cannot remember the cap but we pay around $40 per month. the bill last month was $100. Honestly, I really miss flow. A friend of mine here has a 100mpbs connection (so he says, also he's filthy rich) but the concept of 'unlimited' doesn't really fly too well here.

There are charges for every little thing here, for every service. I recently saw a $1 charge on the TV bill for DST adjustment. Really? to adjust the clocks? I call BS. Seriously not enough competition driving these companies IMO. Word to the wise, if ever you need to sign up for a service be it TV, Internet or phone - Avoid Bell, and buy a cell home and bring it with you.

I hate DSL..so much

Netflix try to help d situation recently when they introduced some different settings geared towards capped users:

Quote
...
Netflix wants to help the internet starved Canadians! Late last night, Netflix CPO Neil Hunt announced via the official Netflix blog that data usage is being lowered by 2/3 for members in Canada.
...
1. “Good” – The default setting with good picture quality and lowest data use per hour (about 0.3 GB/hour)
 2. “Better” – Better picture quality and medium data use per hour (about 0.7 GB/hour)
 3. “Best” – Best picture quality and highest date use per hour (generally about 1.0 GB/hour – or up to 2.3 GB/hour when streaming HD content)

Doing the math, a person who streamed 30 hours of content in a month would use 9GB on the “good” setting, 21 GB on the “better” setting and 30-69 GB on the “best” setting.

I was experimenting with the wi-fi on this slim console, and realised that the problem might
be the wi-fi card itself.  It's not even being detected by the console's dashboard.

Luckily it's rather easy to get to, and remove, so now it's off to eBay.

Nothing to lose, right?

We'll see how that goes.

If I remember correctly, I actually opened mine and swapped it out for a known working card but it still failed to register.

I am pretty sure that's what I did but for the life of me, I can't remember 100%. I'll ask a pardner and see if he remembers as he was helping me with the issue.

For those XBL owners either living in the US or fortunate enough to have large quantities of disposable income have a read:
Quote
Microsoft prepares a Halo anniversary bash
Could breathe new life into the thought-dead franchise
HUNCH SHOULDERED SUN AVOIDERS rejoice as Microsoft is planning a party to celebrate one of your behind closed doors pastimes.
The console game Halo will be the subject of festivities, as opposed to Wonder Woman costume changes, and Microsoft, with the aid of developer Bungie, will throw a big bash for it as it enters a second decade.
Halofest will take place at the larger Pax Prime event, which runs from 26-28 August, and might include some surprises. Possibly even a new installment in the series that was supposed to have extended itself with Halo: Reach.
"If you call yourself a Halo fan, this is the year to attend PAX Prime! With a PAX Prime badge, fans gain admission to Halo Fest, the largest and most expansive live Halo experience ever. Packed with tournaments, exclusive panels, and sweet prizes, Halo Fest is the place to be for Halo fans attending PAX Prime 2011," says the official Halo web site.
"This event commemorates ten incredible years of Halo, looking back at the amazing stories that forged a diverse community and redefined gaming for two entire console generations. [Join us] and see why the last ten years of Halo were just the beginning."

Looks very interesting indeed.

I would have preferred a keyboard for the WASD vs the thumb stick but definitely worth looking into.

Speaking of which, the Xim 3 is out now and looking decent.

wont using the analog actually make movement easier than using WASD?
thats 1 of the things i loved about the fragfx for ps3 best of both sides, analog for movement and mouse for aiming

correct

just as you have to learn to use the analog stick to aim

even between mice.

You may be comfortable pwning with a Logitech MX510. Then try playing with Microsoft mouse.

There is a difference.
