W1nTry runs GOW and COD 3 with multiple people on his console on Live and it's fine. Once you not downloading anything on your PC at the same time you safe. I don't have that problem cause I am in NY and I have Digital Cable with a Cable Modem, so DSL is slow compared to my connection.

MICROSOFT JUST HASN'T stopped with cracking the holes in PlayStation 3 armour. First it knocked the 1080p discussion, and now, an IPTV service is being prepared in order to make the Xbox the TiVo device for the late first decade of the 21st century.

Unlike the thing Steve Jobs will allegedly be unveiling at his MacWorld keynote - opening exactly the same day as CES this year - IPTV content isn't provided by Microsoft. However, it is working with existing content providers that run their services.

Robbie Bach used the CES Keynote to launch the service with an intelligent name: IPTV for the Xbox 360. Since companies are only talking about social networking blah blah, it's no wonder that this service will feature a sort of joint commenting on content, all with the aim of having as deep a social impact as possible. Just imagine heated arguments over a "scientific error" in one of the sci-fi series [Sheesh, let's hope not. Ed.]. All that, courtesy of IPTV on Xbox 360.

We have seen the demo and we have to say that Microsoft has added a lot of headroom with the console, because software just keeps on being developed. The amount of official modding has just been incredible.

You're still thinking that a larger hard drive isn't on the way? Think of 120GB local storage and hundreds of gigabytes at your local media server. Or a terabyte or two? µ

Shiv some input here. So we're seeing Sony sell the PS3 as a BR player + gaming console, whilst MS seems to be selling its 360 as a gaming console but constantly adding functionality through software. Whats your take on this and how it looks for the future of both consoles?

MS is adding functionality because of many reasons. Most being these two

1. They have ALOT more money than SONY to spend on the system.
2. MS has a deadline to "take over" the game market...its 8 years after the XBOX was launched. They can trump SONY with anything they bring out.

the PS3 is a Blu Ray disc player that plays games, not the other way around. However the 360 is the opposite. It funtions primarily as an online gaming console with bells and whistles for multimedia support.

SONY is hoping people "realize" that Blu Ray is a better quality version of picture than HD. However I did think it was a night and day difference.....not so much now. Wednesday I went to Best Buy looking for a Wii (didnt find one of course) and checked out Blu Ray and HD again. Blu Ray is more vibrant than HD, its brighter and more colorful. However you are only noticing these differences when placed side by side.

Now SONY boasts Blu Ray for their games to add extra content. Game reviewers are once again seeing the wrong thing in Blu Ray. Its designed to allow uncompressed (higher res so to speak) data to be placed on the disc. You can have all the space but if you dont have the power to do it obviously it wont work well.

Now SONY themselves are saying "more content", but its just talk. Companies are right now catching their @ss to make a functioning game on a regular Dual Layer DVD, much less add MORE content to the game. Its a human flaw, not a technical one if you want to call it that.

Future of the consoles, the PS3 is going to sell and do well but not as well as the PS2 did atall, especially at that price. People are still viewing it as a gaming system, and 600 US for a console is kinda ridiculous. I dont know if SONY is trying to change the face of their fanbase from "hardcore consoler" to "average consoler that watches movies and plays games".....i cant say.

For the 360 the future depends on if they keep their pace now. If 360 turns out an exclusive console (only console not PC) title every few months that is stellar SONY isnt catching that system, not even with Metal Gear. If Lost Planet sells well, followed by Bioshock, Age of Conan, Forza Motorsport 2 then the juggernaut of Halo 3 and the immense Crackdown sales (because it comes with HALO 3 online demo)  well, the 360's fate is sealed for most sales.

Kinda hard to put down oblivion - up to level 11 (massive super tweaking! i.e. 5-5-5 each level, with minimum number of skills for maximum level, endurance first for max hp). kinda hate the level system. i.e. if all my main skills were major, i'd never get a full 5-5-5 on levelling. Magic is the sh!t compared to morrowind. Jumping sucks though. Love seeing things flying back from a magical touch.

btw - as far as the difference between bluray and hddvd for video - vibrance and color is a matter of the system, tv settings, and the encoding. if both are made from the same original film, then the only difference should be near unnoticable extra details from bluray's extra capacity, though noticing it will be near impossible. 30GB max for hddvd?

1920x1080 for hd - [1920*1080/(720*480)]*4.5GB = 27GB.
that accounts not only for video *increase, but also sound.

does not take into account, the suppossed better compression today, in which case the capacity, can be smaller.

Well you see Beo, as Shiv mentioned, one of the selling points of the BR is the fact that capacity wise, it can afford to have compression-less formats. Now we all know there are great compresion techniques that require minimal overhead in terms of processing (ala HD-Divx and Xvid). However its still an overhead. Now if you combine the available capacity with compression then you can really run wild with the amt of storage capacity available. Of course I say we opt for option 3. THe Chinese HD content disc (cyah rem the name atm) + Linux. That way we avoid all the DRM infections and having to pay intel or whomever else royalties to play HDCP discs. Its all just a way to squeeze the consumer more whilst their pockets get fatter and fatter for no good reason.

ditto - been asking for open disc (no it doesn't exist - YET!) over the current fare on techreport. Rather something good for consumers than the lesser of 2 evils. I REALLY dont like the idea that a bluray player can be disabled, or updated by inserting a movie disc.

And I know about the artifacting and all that - I play with video compression a lot (started because of my tv card). It's just that it's impossible to see a difference with the naked eye. Hate that HDCP protection has to be in my gpu, monitor and optical drive, because it means constant interrupts to the os.

and vf4 happens to be one of the best most balanced fighters to ever have been made.

i did say i was joking smarty, i know vf games are supposed to be good, they said that tekken 4 was much weaker than the vf game that was out at the time and i know people argue the series to be better than tekken but the point is that
tekken is better in my opinion and SC is right up there with it so why the hell would i buy a 360 for vf when i could get a ps3 for sc and tekken?

we should also note that the game just isn't an exclusive anymore and will still be out on the ps3 so this means that if i cared for vf i could buy all 3 for my ps3

i never said that i expected all to remain, if you read my first post over u'll see that i said that as long as they have those two games <---meaning that if they don't well then thats another story

and even if you want to say sc2 was better than 3, 2 was also on the ps2 just on the xbox ans gc as well, it just means that you didn't like what they did with the game and even if it was a multi platform game it would still be lower than sc2
