Following the announcement of the Xbox Elite, potential Xbox 360 owners across the world have been disappointed that the news announced so far only applies to the North American market. However, a recent press release from Microsoft Japan indicates that the Elite's 120 GB hard drive will be available in Japan for the price of 18,900 yen ($161.64 USD) starting June 7th.

But, Wired's gaming blog Game|Life recently examined the Japanese press release a little more closely and noticed some eyebrow-raising conditions that will most likely affect 360 gamers from all regions. In particular, the blog post points towards the process of transferring data from the old 20 GB hard drives to the new 120 GB models.

According to the press release, partial transfer looks to be impossible, since the entire contents of your 20 GB drive will automatically be transferred to the larger 120 GB drive. Once that transfer takes place, everything on your original drive will be permanently deleted. Furthermore, the transfer process has been made into a one-way street as it is impossible to move any transferred data back to an original 20 GB drive.

It is also impossible to transfer the data on two or more 20 GB drives to one single 120 GB drive. If there is existing data on the 120 GB hard drive at the time of transfer, the whole of that data is deleted.

The blog is also quick to point out the words of Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg, who suggested that gamers buy a second 20 GB hard drive upon the launch of the Xbox Video Marketplace. For those who have unfortunately followed his tragic advice, it seems that you're plum out of luck.

While the official unveiling of the Xbox 360 Elite may have made a huge splash earlier in the week, some marketing entities have pointed out that reception for the upgraded system has been less than positive. A message sent to us by BrandIntel, a research company focused on "online market intelligence solutions", has reported that "the Elite is landing with more questions and frustration than excitement."

Their findings are printed below:

Overall sentiment for the Elite is negative, and is currently below the positive sentiment garnered by the Wii and the Playstation 3. Although perception of the system is negative, the intent to purchase an Elite is still positive, with 48 percent of gamers who made statements regarding purchasing, suggesting that they would purchase a system.

Many gamers do not perceive value in purchasing an Elite, and do not feel the addition of HD capabilities and a 120 GB hard drive is worth the new price tag. This lack of value generated 18 percent of Elite-based discussion.

There is a good deal of frustration from current 360 owners regarding the timing of the product.

The Elite's HD features and additional hard drive capacity only generated 7 percent of the discussion each, with that discussion being very evenly split in favor or against the features.

BrandIntel claims that much of their analysis has been derived from online, consumer-published content found in the "online gaming world". This includes the myriad of gaming-related bloggers, forums, and web sites that speckle the internet landscape.

It's a trap!

Here's why;

1. 20GB is sufficient for xbox as is. Demos are meant to be played and delted.
  b. All movies on the market place, can be stored for 2 weeks, and only 24 hours after first played then the user license expires. Which means they are meant to be delted as well and not archived.
   c. Everything purchased and downloaded can be redownloaded free of charge @ anytime.

2. The HDMI in the elite is 1.2 which gives a picture equivalent to what VGA and component already deliver. HDMI 1.3 can do Dolby Digital + and TrueHD, which is just uncompressed PCM over all channels. As it is right now, the highest standard of audio cable is Toslink, which is fully digital, but can only do two channels uncompressed.
  a. This means HDMI 1.2 = 1 pro of having less cables as it does both audio and digital one the same cable.

The black color is nice and all, but when you think of it, it's not worth it at all. The 120GB HDD is selling @ MSRP of $179.99, which is ridiculous. You can get a 500GB Sata 3.0GB for $150 now

New potential buyers will probably buy this.  I dont think many existing 360 owners will flock in droves to this.
The upgrade is just not that advanced for me to want to shell out so much additional money.

I do want one a them black controllers though.  :P

The trick to that is the File System. Apparently it's locked in several ways from the kernel up. That's why no one has been able to abuse it yet. When someone does, tho, it's gonna be a wrap.

I don't have an X360 for the last month or so W1ntry. It died, and I'm right now in the middle of dealing with the situation with MS on a higher level than the regular customer service or even the new "special service repair team".  The 3rd and 4th consoles I got both died with in half hour of powering them up.  I'm not going to deal with this nonsense anymore as long as I can do something about it. ;) I got a new console waiting for me @ the service repair center, but I can't send in the broken one just yet. Gotta wait them out.

OMFGGGGGGG!!!! THIS DEVICE IS THA SHIZNIT!!!

Tested it today with Call Of Duty 3 on Xbox Live, and I was quickly running, jumping and gunning with the best of them.
Whoever invented this device, hats off to you for a truly wonderful product.

I used a Logitech MX 3000 wireless set (keyboard/mouse) for my initial testing.  While the keyboard worked flawlessly,
the mouse movement (which is mapped to the right analog stick) was spotty at times.  My advice when using this is to use
a corded mouse at least.  It supports PS2 and USB.

The only drawback so far?  You cannot use your corded Xbox Live headset.  You will have to use a cordless headset in
conjunction with this device if you want to talk on Xbox Live at the same time.

Fellas, get dis s#!t!!!

NOW!!!

This is a Q&A with Dave Templin, Program Manager for the Windows Gaming Experience team about something called Tray & Play. It allows you to put a game CD/DVD in your PC and almost immediately (within 2 minutes) start playing without having to install. The game installs in the background while you are playing. This is very interesting stuff and will very likely bring more console gamers to PC's.
