got my geforce 6600gt today..... great card, pretty , great IQ , overclocks great , my only gripe is the fan on the chaintech model is SO SLOW ! you can't feel any air being pushed out, and the heatsink gets hotter than hell !  i can hit 1.2 GHZ RAM but the core speed varies from 555 to 560 ( heat) ......  when i feel up to it i willl attach a case fan, and overclock some more...

lo and behold, my score of 3dmark..... j00 be owned !!

Samsung 2ns RAM, all 6600gts have to use GDDR 3 , i think only samsung makes GDDR 3.....  In my experience Samsung RAM overclocks AT LEAST 25% over stock frequency .

That score is my highest , overclocked to 545/1200 mhz .

Great card... but its not worth it if you have a 9700/9800 pro .   No games really challenge it yet, even half life 2 runs fine at max everything, 2x AA  . Still have to try doom 3 , though the alpha runs at 1154x960 with anisotropic at 16x .

Anothing thing that amazes me about the card is SIZE ( compared to speed ) ... its TINY! smaller than my 8500 !  ( about 5 mm )

totally silent, but it cooks with the stock fan!

Also, another neat thing is a 'cool n quiet' feature like on the A64 , or a mobile CPU, it clocks itself down in 2d mode, keeping it nice and cool most of the time .

Doom 3 is playable at ultra 1296x1024 8x AF  , but it takes up 800 megs of system memory     , so the gameplay is a bit jerkey,  its totally smooth 1296x1024 on high , 8x AF .

One thing i'v learned in the past few days : all the next gen engines are designed to store alot of video data in your system RAM,  half life 2 'stutters' cause it keeps all the texture data in your system RAM, and swaps back and forth to the video card when necessary . if you go into the console and add 'Mat_somethingabouttextures' you'll see the texture use .

upgrading to 1 gig of RAM soon.... should be enough, i hear quake 4 is releasing next year :D

And one other thing, ATI DOES have better IQ , my 8500 has better IQ without aniso on than the 6600gt , and the colour quality is better . But once you turn the anisotropic up to 16x and hit digital vibrance , the geforce meets the colour quality, and beats the IQ ....
The 4x quincux AA is superb! nothing ATI i'v seen can touch it .

Have you tried an x800 or even 9800 level ATI?

Comparing IQ of a 6600gt with the fancy stuff enabled to an 8500 isn't exactly fair is it?

IQ refers to how close the current image is to the intended look by the designers.

If the card renders in a way that the final image isn't as it was intended even if it happens to be subjectively "better" is still means it has lower IQ.

There are many variables to affect your comparison such as quality of monitor...quality of vc itself...driver used, etc etc.

i'v seen a 9600 and 9800 in action... i'm saying my old 8500 has better stock IQ to emphasize how far ahead ATI is , but once you turn up Digital vibrance and filtering, the geforce takes the lead .
and another amazing thing, despite the crappy coding in halo ( it still lags at ANY setting on this monster card ) it knows shader 3 when it seens it  .

what kinda filtering you talking bout hoss?

in the benchmarks that i've seen ATI always kicks mucho arse in filtering and AA

ent, weak him here bring. a 8500 is such an old card :(, is a shame he comparing it to something like that
only thing a 8500 good for is hardware truform, but that eh make much sense since games doh really care bout that :)

Halo stutering?... I have a 9800 Pro and I don't notice much stutering ever... save the momentary stuter during loading... hmm... what is he talking about? oh wait... maybe there a stuter when i'm surrounded in an open field with 15+ other AI chars on teh screen and a plasma bomb attached to me.... umm no I don't think even then it stutters... i'll check it out and see what ur talking about... I just don't seem to rem any though. I can see synth and rampage gonna take it to Trini in this thread... should be entertaining...

it only lags in big battles , but the fact that it should lag at ALL when games like doom III and half life 2 don't is BAD .

the geforce 6s have 16x anisotropic now instead of 8x, serious filtering , Radeons have faster AA and AF  but i'v never seen one beat the quality of a  geforce 6.

i'm too lazy to download the latest version of halo..... :P , i'm starting to think halo was optimized for SM3 ... cause when i force it to do SM2 it crashes, if i force it to SM1 it loses 1 fps in benchmarks . either that or its just another bug.....

kick brass card trini. Yuh get my xmas present. lol

Nice score.

My laptop gets struggles with 2500-2600 depending on the whether. pwned immc

lihixxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Run 3Dmark2005. That should post an interesting figure.

Yeah, halo used to be a mc. I remember in the earlies men used to cuss over Halo performance on monster rigs. We was busy with all kinda fancy console command to enable/disable shaders to get good performance. lol

let's hope all of that fixed by now with the new patches! Patch
up boy trini patch up!

As for IQ. That is very subjective. Digital Vibrance has always pwned ATI imo. Down to Geforce2 MX have that feature. I think Berserk showed us that little trick and when we turn it up on the machine down HQ, men thought we upgrade the whole fleet yes. Games looking rich and creamy. Grass lookin bright and green. Desert Combat 0.7 never looked so good. lol

All de ATI men was looking for a similar feature in their control panel but SALT. They had to manually drag gamma sliders and color controls to try and achieve the same effect.

Now  Digital Vibrance isn't any great technical achievement nor does it impact performance. That said, it does give you digitally vibrant looking games with an easy slider!!

Simplicity and beauty iwmc.
