4800 Gamers unhappy with their PSP
« on: January 25, 2005, 12:48:06 AM »
I just came across this ..

In a recent interview, SCE president Ken Kutaragi disclosed that over 4,800 Japanese gamers have sent in their PSPs for repair due to issues with the triangle button. The complaint is that the button is not sensitive enough, requiring it be pressed stronger than the others. Kutaragi admitted that it wasn't an issue with the PSP as it was part of the design. Because of its close proximity to the screen, the sensor under the button is a bit misaligned. Kutaragi stated, "This is the design that we came up with. There may be people that complain about its usability, but that's something which users and game software developers will have to adapt to. I didn't want the PSP's LCD screen to become any smaller than this, nor did I want its machine body to become any larger."

Two words: MASS RECALL.
Seriously, that's NOT a good thing when a handheld would give trouble in the controls department, and even less so when it's a system that was as highly anticipated and hyped up as the PSP.

Get a load of this, I can also remember someone, namely camrE mentioning this early on in the game (yes pun intended) that something to this effect would happen, and being fought hands down by others on the board. Well the proof is in the pudding kids. read on

Quote
Sony Computer Entertainment boss Ken Kutaragi has defended a design decision in the PlayStation Portable which has led to a high rate of returns for the console, saying that it had a \"clear purpose\" and \"wasn't a mistake\".

Speaking with Japanese magazine Nikkei Business, Kutaragi revealed that around 4,800 PlayStation Portables have been returned for repair since the console launched last month - around 0.6 per cent of the shipped units of the system.

The bulk of these repairs have been due to problems with the square button on the handheld, which is less responsive than the others on the fascia due to being too close to the edge of the system's screen.

However, Kutaragi was unapologetic about the design of the console, saying that the button was created in this way on purpose and that users and developers will \"have to adapt\" to this quirk of the controls.

\"I didn't want the PSP's LCD screen to become any smaller than this, nor did I want its machine body to become any larger,\" he told Nikkei Business. \"The button's location is [engineered] on purpose. It's according to specifications. This is something that we've created, and this is our specification. There was a clear purpose to it, and it wasn't a mistake.\"

Tell me this dude doesn't have some kinda brass nuts or something. He is saying; Yes the PSP was engineered to be defective. lmao. I still want one, but just like I said before, most likely in the second or third phase of these machines. Sony has an awful track record and SCEA is even worst. 10 versions of a best selling console from a well established giant of the electronics industry and they couldn't get their product right, had to redesign their controller to copy the non-existant competitor's design, 6 years after, comes out with a new console that still was plagued with simple problems such as, not reading CD's after a while and overheating. You, like me can say your PSII still works, but there were and are thousands of other that went bad. LOL. Sony sux donkeys.  When you think of it, they have no right in the gaming industry, they had no 1st party development houses for years, then their 2nd party houses flat out suck, Eidos and 989 studios for example. They contributed nothing to the industry, the software sold their awful psOne thanks to some clever marketing and buy outs. Sony rocks!!!!! [_[

Engineered to be defective... thats offensive (to the engineers that is) how could that man basically say that, yup brass balls.. nah actually thats not brass balls, thats just plain dumb. Anyways, eidos is not that bad man camre, didn't soul reaver for the PS come from them? damn best opening movie I have ever seen on the PS1. This whole take it and eat it sounds reminded me of something the new Dell CEO said and put his entirely leg down his throat..."the apple ipod is a fad" and he also slammed the sony walkman (not the cd or mp3 players, the orignal tape playing walkman that EVERYONE wanted or had). Yes Sour grapes I believe is the correct expression.

As I recall, the earlier versions of the PS2 also has a defect that I'm sure most of you veteran PS2 users would have come across sooner or later. After a while, the system would stop reading certain discs, requiring you to turn the system on the side (and, in my case, upside down) to read them.

I learned sometime later that this problem was common when I took it to fix, as the PS2 had some problem between the disc tray and the laser eye. In my case, the disc tray had worn down a tad, and was now slack. Shame on that guy for saying that defective goods were part of the plan all along. People like that should be kicked square in the nads and forced to play 'Barbie's Horse Racing Adventure'.

The problem that the PSII’s had was one that may seem small but in actuality proved to be stupendous. They lost the function of reading “blue-bottomed” discs, which were in fact CD’s. This is absurd considering that the machine is built to primarily read DVD’s which are a more complexed format of media. On top of that, most of the first one hundred games were on CD’s so a lot of people got hurt. Another problem was the fact that it scratched disc when you put it in the vertical position. A position that was highly touted as a feature. While the first generation’s of Xboxes were know to scratch discs, Microsoft denied any knowledge but quickly addressed the issue. Sony on the other hand just didn’t care.

I for one am happy about my PSP, no defects that I can find, that may be because I have the US version, not the Japanese version, I think that they have made an adjustment to these defects that they admitted to. I have 4 launch titles (Tony Hawk Underground 2 Remix, Twisted Metal: Head on, Wipeout Pure, and Metal Gear Acid.) They all work great and are great launch titles for the PSP. The screen is the best and clearest screen I have ever seen on a handheld console and the graphics are what they say, PS2 quality. I watched Spiderman 2 the movie on my PSP and it was like watching a mini Plasma TV with a dvd player. I hope sony does more with their UMD discs than just PSP. The future looks bright for Sony's newest creation.

That issue is for the Japanese PSP's only that were launched prior to the US release. They fixed that problem with the PSP in the US.

Besides this problem the idea was stolen from aguy who helped  maked the prototype. They fired the poor guy. As a result he sued Sony and they were at risk of recalling all 500,000 units but a settlement agreement of over 9 million was paid.

Anyway the DS was not made to compete with the PSP but to hamper its sales so when the GB Revoloution comes out it will destroy PSP

PSP = greatest  handheld available  ,  if only sony didn't make so much money off cell  phones, they might have integrated cell phone chips into the psp....  add 50 US to the price,  throw in a headset, and they would have doubled their sales , really people, a cell phone that plays games  better than a ps1 ! for 400 US, most people payed more for their P800/900 or Razors .
All products have implementation problems , if i remember correctly one expansion of the gameboy , a 'visor' to immerse the player in the game,  was banned cause it sent them blind after awhile..... a sticky triangle button is a minor problem !

LOL........that was the Virtual BOy. Had that. Yea, imagine playing the old OLD OLD star wars (atari style) with BRIGHT RED graphics. It can burn out your corneas. I mean after 5 minutes on the damn thing i had to stop.

now that is somethign COMPLETELY different to a sticky triangle problem of course. One is a nuisance the other ....well is just plain hazardous.
