Worker dead at desk for five days...

WORKER DEAD AT DESK FOR 5 DAYS New York Times

Bosses of a publishing firm are trying to work out why no one noticed that one of their employees had been sitting dead at his desk for FIVE DAYS before anyone asked if he was feeling okay.

George Turklebaum, 51, who had been employed as a proof-reader at a New York firm for 30 years, had a heart attack in the open-plan office he shared with 23 other workers. He quietly passed away on Monday, but nobody noticed until Saturday morning when an office cleaner asked why he was still working during the weekend.

His boss Elliot Wachiaski said: "George was always the first guy in each morning and the last to leave at night, so no one found it unusual that he was in the same position all that time and didn't say anything. He was always absorbed in his work and kept much to himself."

A post mortem examination revealed that he had been dead for five days after suffering a coronary. Ironically, George was proofreading manuscripts of medical textbooks when he died.

You may want to give your co-workers a nudge occasionally.

Moral of the story: Don't work too hard. Nobody notices anyway.

Old news.
And, chances are, that story's baloney to boot, since two of the sources that I've heard it from are the Blast and the National Enquirer, and we all now how 'reliable' their stories are, don't we? ;)

Here are my gripes with this tale:

1) A body usually starts to decompose after THREE days. I guess it must have been flu season if nobody noticed the smell.

2)Security must be pretty lax there, too, if they lock up the office with people still inside (or don't even take account for the people entering or leaving the premises, for that matter).

3) And, I'm pretty sure that the guy wasn't doing work so menial for the company that the boss or at least one of his supervisors didn't stroll in to check up on his progress.

4) Janitors usually clean up office spaces like that on a daily basis. Why would this one NOW walk in, after all this time, and notice that something was wrong?

But yeah is not a new story and snopes.com have a thing on it and all, so I guess its not a news story either. But they forever finding people dead at home and nobody knew for days until the smell start kicking.

Ah, but here's the key thing.
They found them dead at home.

It's quite possible to die in your house and not be discovered for some period of time, because, unlike work, where a lot of people pass by on a 9 to 5 basis, a person's home isn't a place where many people can just enter and exit of their own free will. A person can practically live by him/her self for days, even months on end without physical contact with the outside world, and nobody would really be the wiser.
At work, it's quite unusual to not discover somebody dead, because, chances are, somebody would be passing through somewhere.

chupidee!! :D yuh knowm if the man had a uniform, then no one may have noticed his clothes change. Also, if he suffer from dropsy and men accustomed passing and seeing him sleeping on himself, then they would just say, "Aye, boy, wake up!" and walk off (happened to me often)

But seriously, who reads the Blast and Enquiror and takes most of that bs seriously??
