New DSL company.
« on: January 27, 2005, 10:33:17 PM »
Its called green.com (odd name) Its a new company down here. There ARE here, they are offering DSL, but through wireless modems. They are currently doing testing, their testing speed is 128down, 64up. And after carnival when they OFFICALLY launched, they are looking at 256down, 128up. They told me that they are offering about $375 I think. And they are located somewhere on Calton Ave, St James. As soon as I get more info, I'll post more.

I guess this good, only the wireless part have me iffy.
Price is good, but again this is a dry weather connection.
When i hear more about them i will contemplate.

high frequency transmittions ( 2ghz +) will not be affected by weather sunspots etc.
will they be offering service in the east ? esp. arima/arouca ? i suffer with dialup far too long, and the tstt mcs don't want to run a dsl to me !

Try signing up online, but only if it says service is available in your area on the website.

What happened to me is that when I called customer service, they told me that the service isn't available in my area. So I asked them why are they advertising Diego as a whole and the whole of Diego doesn't have service. She told me they mean Diego or part thereof. I said oh.

Normal normal i went to www.tstt.net.tt, went to the check availablity section, entered my phone number and it came up as service is available in your area. I aint even bother to call back customer service because dem is a setta n00bs.

Went to the online sign up, signed up for the service. Next morning I get a call from TSTT asking to me to come sign my contract. Took about 2 weeks to install though, but they told me that they had to install the service on my exchange because it wasn't setup before. Even though the service wasn't there before they installed it because their website was displaying that there is service in my area. If they called me after and told me the service wasn't available, daz problems for dey mc right dey.

i believe the proper term would be wireless broadband , dsl = Digital subscriber LINE , this is wireless, probably Wi-Max, or Wi-Fi , or something along those lines ...

hopefully the pings will be better , more bandwidth to downloud our .... legally challenged replicas .....  cheaper than TSTT's sh!t ...... and also wireless has more headroom for bandwidth, ADSL has a physical limit , its a little higher than T1...
hopefully the network will be a WAN so our local  gatt servers will have 10ms pings !

lol

Yeah ghost, I made a pass on that carlton avenue today, but couldn't find the place. Which building is it exactly? Got a phone number??? Building #??

lol

Remember trini, this is a "public network" we talkin bout.

While you won't be getting 54mbps dsl from tstt anytime soon you won't exactly be enjoying all the power of a private 54g wireless network either, unless you're 50 feet from the green.com's office.

To answer RB's question on if wireless is good for gaming..... it depends.

A private wireless network with 5-10 users will game just fine. No different from a LAN (save for transfer speeds, which gets worse the further away you are from the transmitter). Most multiplayer games don't require strong transfer speeds so the point is moot. Great for Gaming in this config!

A typical public Wireless network, rife with traffic issues, caps and other bottlenecks will suck for gaming. ESPECIALLY moreso if they use a satelite connection for the backbone. That will add 500-600ms just to get your packets off the island and back.

Altogether now..."OUCH!"

Best hope is for an uncapped wireless connection to a DSL backbone with a wireless node close to the source without many hops and without many subscribers. Then and only then gaming would wtfpwn on a public wireless network. Early adopters will rejoice.

Hardly likely but let us keep our fingers and toes crossed!!

Adsl BW is limmited to the modem not the service u can get up to 8mbit/864 download/upload with the crappy usb modem if ur isp offferd the service and more with the ethernet ones. sunspots sever enough will mess with communication at 2 Ghz plus frequency

8mbit is still very far away from 54mb offered on g

and there are 125mb flavours being bandied about now.

again, the backbone on the island won't make that useful for traffic destined internationally but it will pwn for inter island stuff.

problem is really gonna be saturation and hops.

guess you can't have your cake and eat it too.
