D3LL and @MD
« on: December 10, 2004, 08:37:43 AM »
The following is a very interesting article about D3ll and @MD opter0n processors. I look at it as the beginnning of the end, u can take it as u want 1ntel BAW!!!
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=20157
For those that prefer the highlights:
Quote
DELL IS KNOWN  for its stance on AMD, or its lack of a stance on AMD. The power games, wishy washy statements and brinksmanship are getting very old and dull, and there is little that is fact publicly available.

We all know the drill, you call Dell, it gives you one of 12 standard blow off lines, and half heartedly tries to convince you that you don't want Opterons, contrary to the reason you called Dell in the first place.

Quote
The 64-bit question is however, what does it tell you if you are serious? Well, if it thinks you mean business, and you have something that makes it think twice before blowing you off, it will try a little harder.

Quote
A corporate account with a buying history does nicely, and with that in mind, an intrepid reader asked nicely, and got a response....First, Dell tried the old SWAT lines - company reliability and stability. That didn't work. Then Dell tried to throw out a few benchmarks, and that got no further, but the benchmarks are incredibly funny. More on those later. Lastly, it passed the buck to Intel and said the person should call Intel for a better brainwashing on its vision and roadmaps.

Quote
The person who sent me the benchmark missive either wasn't big enough or persistent enough, but if you are, you can buy Opterons from Dell now. You just have to convince Dell that you are out the door if you don't get what you want and you are big enough to care about.

Quote
If you make it through the, yawn, excuse me, persuasive yet scintillating speech, and satisfy the above criteria, Dell will sell you Opterons, but only through 'back channels' and quietly, very quietly. In fact, please don't let anyone know, it could lead to some embarrassing phone calls. Keep this between you and me please.

Unfortunately...not many fall into this group:

Interesting nonetheless that they are budging from their stance as an Intel-only shop...allbeit on the dl...

AMD is cheaper , with !ntel they now have to hand out high quality PSUs , the Prescott core can eat 120 watts by itself under load by itself , any amd CPU uses half that,  on top of that they now have to make their cases cooler to prevent molten CPUS [ 5% of 3.8ghz P4s fry ] . Until intel gets its act together, AMD will be preferred by ALL .

But um...ITANIUM NAH WANTS NUTTIN WIT OPTERON! Lixxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx idmc! So move along wit yuh intel lovin self...

Besides....is Dell who pit the lowly Xeon against the Opteron and tried to skew the results (what a mistake dat was! )...even the great intel-lovin whore that Dell is, doesn't really use Itaniums...cos EVERYONE knows that Itanium is balls...so much so that hp, its co-inventor, has turned their backs on it! :P

Ok Ok seriously, you could always hit up @MD on the mobile front.... at least till they seriously bring out their A64's mobile parts in full force. And even so I hear those Pent1um Ms are marvellous save for the FPU which is lacking currently.

what itanium have that opertron should get is the large caches. largest itanium has 9 mb of cache i can fit almost any single mp3 in that it opertron get more cache there performance will increase

Now you'll have to take into consideration that the Itan1um is not in the same market segment as the 0pteron. True enough that 1ntel would have liked it to be that way... @MD spoiled their plans as making x86 64-bit computing the 64-bit choice. So its not exaclty an apples to oranges comparison... if you wanted to compare them, then you should add the 1BM/@pple Power PC line of CPUs as they are also 64-bit (NATIVE). !tanium competes in the RISC and SMP markets, unlike the 0pterons.

#1 NO CPU, Prescott or otherwise can go MOLTEN under normal user environments.

#2. Athlons stopped being a global warmer (in comparison to intel) since XP1600s aka palomino cores. Intel just keeps on increasing the distance to AMD with each processor release, wrt environmental unfriendliness.

#3. L2 caches are not AUTOMATICALLY filled (linearly). You imply the OS will automatically use it like that but thats far from how it actually works. Thats why doubling L2 doesn't provide so much benefit generally speaking...I mean hell Prescott has 1MB...Fact is unless OS and/or programs are optimized for using larger L2 caches the improvement are always minor.

#3 Pentium4 M's are really "a64s" but don't tell anyone.

Umm synth I think you mean the Pentium M not the Pentium 4M is an A64 in disguise... cause thats an insult to an A64 to be compared to a P4M... that aside... that comment was still funny. But then i've always suspected that Bill G@tes used apple computers in the background for his OS intros... ever since the Win95 debacle where it froze.  And its a fact that windows can run on a apple machine... or was it MacOSX could run on a x86 machine... I think I have it right the first time.
