End of the Gaming PC ?
« on: December 09, 2004, 09:22:53 PM »
Microsoft plans to release a version of the Xbox 2 aimed at the PC market, other console makers have expressed similar interests.... the yet to be seen phantom was supposed to start the trend that will lead to the decline of the gaming PC .
If it ever DOES happen, that an Xbox 2 PC plays windows games better than a high end, next generation PC , will you stand by your platform? I myself may not ,  if it DOES give better price/performance i may sell my entire rig  and get an Xbox .

i will never get rid of my pc over a console. first of all a pc offers a lot more than just a "gaming center". any serious man knows that, if you gonna sell your system to buy a xbox then you're a complete fool in my eyes...i telling you straight up :)

at the end of the day, if it is "targeted" at PC Gamers, such an xbox WILL BE a gaming PC.

So the point is moot.

If you take a PS2, add a hard drive, keyboard, mouse and a broadband connection...what do you have??

A PC.

Same for Xbox et al.

Let's "pretend" it's a console for the uninformed who are afraid of computers.

the consoles i'm talking about run WINDOWS [ of some form] .
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=19615 .

No ramp if i wanted to just play games, i wouldn't have spent 5000TT building a gaming PC .

I doubt they will be able to beat the PC at what it does right now, but as time goes on these hybrids WILL have to be considered , the xbox 2 is supposed to have 3 cpus and a next generation ATI graphics processor , most PCS will not be able to compete with that AND be affordable at the same time .
The RAM requirements will probably be bypassed by using a high speed hard drive link [ 1.5 Gb/S off sata II] , the Xbox 1 plays games that need 256 RAM + 64mb Vram  on PC with only 64mb  of RAM for the cpu AND gpu because it was designed to acess the HD all the time .
With a mod chip and patience you can install Linux on an Xbox 1, http://www.anandtech.com/linux/showdoc.aspx?i=2271&p=11  .
then again we have to wait and see, knowing gates to be all talk his entire scheme might flop like the infamous Phantom .

Its interesting that you mention all this about the Xbox 2... btw its official now, its going to be running on som 1BM/@pple G5 processor (not sure about the 3 cpu thing though). I.e NOT x86... they were working on an emulator I heard to make it backwards compatible. I also know the xbox 2 will come in about 3 flavours... plain vanilla aka without a HD and extra gooodies, chocolate and vanilla aka HD and a few perks and full blown Chocolate moca with sprinkles and hot fudge toppings.. aka a damn PC in a smaller more protected box. By that time SATA II will also be in full swing so 300mbps will he the case. The GPU used will prolly be some 256 or 512 @TI derivative as its basically the R500 core. I will agree with Trini here to an extent in that gamers may opt for one of these flavours for less money than a PC and get all the gaming they want while buying a comparatively cheap PC just to surf the net and run apps. We all know how WORD and EXCEL need the latest Geforce or Rade0n to run. So in the future, gamers may very well opt for a mid level Xbox 2 and an mid level PC which may work out cheaper than a full blown over the top Alienw@re ALX system. I myself will stand by my PC, but hey thats me.

Yeah but lets look at the possible downsides. while it will be a PC you can pretty much guess its going to have an OS allong the line of Media Edition. this means extensive rights management. M$ is very smart in that catagory and while Windows Rights Management (WRM) maybe just be game related i also believe it will extend to anything else dumped onto these so called Xbox PCs. so basically any Movie, Mp3, tivo etc (almost anything other than gaming) functions will be restricted.

so the question i ask is will i trade a fully functioning System for another which is more restricted that just plays games better? Nope. NADDA! NEVAH!

PC tech jumps and leaps bonds, they could never mass produce a system that out performs a beast machine.

Remember the point we're getting at here is affordability vs performance or price performance... now take into consideration the next gen consoles have keyboard and mouse  support as they are scaled down PC's for gaming, and what real ristrictions are there? also on the PC side, considering they are bringing into reality secure everything, its only a matter of time before hardware is restricted adn ur dvd player has a chip inside it to validate the DVD u watching so that no amount of software will bypass it. 1ntel has been working on digital signatures and hardware locks of all kinds in recent years. Whos to say ur PC won't eventually become as restricted as ur game console. And I mean really the game console is not that restricted as u think vinion. U can install Linux on a PS2 and a Xb0x with a SOFTMOD (btw trini u can install evolution X on an Xbox without the mod chip, thru the help of none other than a MS game LOL mech assault or something so). I think that one day, ppl may just hve a console for gaming and a PC for everything else.

This is absurd, honestly. a console that plays PC games is a console! Period. or vice versa. What is really the diffrence between a pc and a console where gaming is concerned?

As far as I see, the difference is the interface, or else we would see a alot more RTS titles on home consoles.

The xbox is a pc in guise, has all the same parts and works the same way. It does not run windows, and thats the real difference.

The phantom is a pc, even if it does play on the tv or look different cosmetically.

if i put a duck in boots, will it stop being a duck?

Well yeah, thats the way I see it. But I think alot of ppl will prefer to have a gaming console (esp ppl new to games and computers or just in general afraid of computers) just for games and a PC to surf the net. Also take into account that the mobile market is really picking up in terms of PCs. Granted the mobile graphics market is also advancing but not fast enough to keep up with games. So If most ppl eventually only use laptops, that would mean they would game on consoles. PC is for stuff like solitaire lol... well at least to the avg user. TO ppl like us, our comp is our pride and joy and we'd burn with it if the house was on fire. Either way, I think the console market wil grow and the PC gaming market decline as time progresses.

The phantom itself is nothing but a PC sold cheap

http://www.hardocp.com/image.html?image=MT...UpfM180X2wuanBn
There may be more 'consoles' like this . All we need is a case and a mobo , then we buy the latest 'phantom' , strip it down , and we have a gaming pc on the cheap!

interface is where it is really at. Ppl who play fps'  on PC dont like em on consoles and vice cersa. RTS on consoles suck cause of the cursor movement. Every console is a pc. same parts and blah blah blah. It boils down to interface being the integral diffrence. I prefer consoles because, less worries about upgrading hardware, i prefer a controller to a keyboard and mouse, and it's easier to lay down infront of the console than to lay down infront of the pc. lol

the line is beginning to blur

as PC games become easier and less involved to install and play

and as console become more involved and experiment with more intricate controllers.

Remember the Atari was just a 1 button affair. Now we have controllers with buttons coming out all over the place. Enough to make even the fanciest logitech mouse blush.

Throw in a remote control for the "dvd" component and you are fast approaching the "complexity" of a Windows XP media center PC.

In the year 2006, the conversion of both platforms will be even more apparant.

I'm doing my part by closing another gap that distances the two platforms. Two player controllers.

Every console can easily accomodate two players. The average PC setup, can't.

Promoting USB converters that provide 2 console gamepads on the PC changes that, immediately. Player 1 and Player 2.

configuring them can still be a challenge, but it is a start.

Further blurring the lines is a converter for keyboard and mouse setup on the PS2 and Xbox. Great for FPS games which normally suffer on gamepads.

The future is bright!!

gaming iwmc!

Yeah baego but come 2007 I'm comvinced that it PC parts will be replaced by HIGH END CONSOLE PARTS and even more so the purchase of new neccessary software for your new consoles..... In essence a PC in a console shell... without the freedom

As beago said the line is beginning to blur, it was pretty obvious that it was just a matter of time before this happened. It's meant to be a paradigm shift, erasing the concept of proprietary devices, making everything a PC application. Eventually they'll start using terms like nomadic software where one program would exist across multiple physical devices transferring and retaining individual settings, and things like that but that's many many years off. For now we have an x-box that plays pc games. It won't make any previous model redundant, instead, as with any technological advance, it increases our efficiency and capabilities, allowing us to do more.
