Wag the dog with a bridge chip
« on: October 04, 2004, 12:59:55 PM »
As @TI has in recent times flogged Nv1dia thoroughly for using its HSI or bridge chip to convert AGP to PCIe and vice versa, its seems that they are quite quiet now as they themselves seem to be soon to introduce one themselves you can read more about the that here:
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=18853

This begs the question... does the dog (Nv1dia) wag the tail or was @TI trying to wag the dog earlier?

@ti was knocking an AGP-PCi bridge because :

a.it increased cost [ by like 5 US]
b.  the processor was STILL limited to an AGP bus even though it is on PCI
c.  it decreased performance because it added ping time .

the 6800 ultra PCI is like  25mhz overclocked from the 6800 AGP, and its still SLOWER . Not to mention how EXPENSIVE it was to make one,  6800 ultras are rare, 6800 PCI ultras are almost non existant .
A PCI-AGP bridge allows us poor/cheap gamers to keep our currant systems and upgrade to the latest video cards . It may be slightly more expensive than a PCI-X but its still ALOT cheaper than getting a whole new system .
It will be SLOWER than PCI-x cards by a bit .. but it could be offset by AGP overclocking and GPU overclocking.
Nvidia was being CHEAP by doing this ,  a poor attempt to launch into a new market, ATI is doing this so that us AGP people will not need a brand new system for a good while to come .

allyuh doh kno dat dem cards rendering de same ting with little tweaks here and there..

FIGHT THE POWER

use your IMAGINATION......best graphic rendering goin on dere

 de original weed smoker .....

yes they render the same thing but  the new ones have lot more processing power , more memory bandwidth, and new features .
   saying an X-800 and a Tnt 2 is the same thing is like saying a PII 400mhz, 128mb PC100 and a 3ghz P4 , 512mb DDR 400 is de same ting .

Dread the overhead of the bridgechip is not that high, its also NOT expensive to make, the real reason @TI beat Nv1dia over the head that way is cause they didn't think of it themselves. Why else would they resort to it now? cause its more economical simple. And last I check the 6800 Ultra is less rare than the X800XT Plat THAT is a fact so I doh know what u talking about.

technically all card nvidia card using the bridge chip are not at full potential of 16 pci x . since the bridge chip work at 16 x apg even though it uncertified it at  that  speed . so if i would were to make nv40 native pci 16x then i double the cards bandwdith :P
