dual layer dvd+r
« on: May 20, 2004, 03:31:39 PM »
8.5gb on a one-sided dual layer dvd disc. now how sweet can that be... and its backward compatible with regular old dvd-roms.

http://www4.tomshardware.com/motherboard/2...0514/index.html

other than sony, i have seen lite-on with a huge amount of dual layer burners which are available...

would u think its worth the investment? or would a 12x DVD+R plextor be better to get (single layer)

I'm 2 minds about this technology...on the 1 hand it's great that you can finally burn a double layer DVD, not only does this mean more space for data etc but also as strongton mentioned, 1 to 1 copies without compression etc., but on the other hand, Sony and many other companies are poised to release the new Blu-ray and HD-DVD technologies which will more than just double the capacity of the DVD, which brings me to this question about DVD Dual Layer...will the technology last? Or will Blu-ray and HD-DVD etc. be released and totally negate it's existance? Who wants an 8.5GB DVDR when they can get one that holds 27GB??

the deciding factor will be the cost of the medium, blu ray and HD-DVD, will be damn expensive

i would recommend .. you buy one of the dual sided DVDs.. and test its durability.. and see how well it resists fungus growth outside an airtight container..
they might be veeeerry  sensative and will go bad after a light scratch

Eh?it wouldn't make sense making something that wasn't durable so i think that would be taken care off before they introduce the thing wouldnt you?...

And you SHOULD be worried. DVD+R and -R blanks vary in quality so much its scary to say the least. Brand name or otherwise they can vary even amongst the same line of a particular manufacturer. For data storage stick to +R for DVD playback -R.

That never stopped manufacturers before; Releasing an imperfect product is nothing new in the tech world. Often the imperfections are so obvious...makes you wonder wtf the designers were thinking!

I recommend waiting at least a few months till the process gets out of "beta" stage and blanks have been tried and tested.

Just like everything else that's new in the tech world. But it'll be a while. 16x writers will last a while. they cant spin a peice of plastic much faster.
