Virtual Reality, The Future Of Gaming?

With the announcement of Sony's Project Morpheus, the Release of the Oculus Rift Dev Kit 2, and Rumor for Microsoft's pending VR headset, I think it's time to do a thread based on this very old, but potentially very epic technology.
Few videos to get things started:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=TRtlrMtbx1g
Personally i'm stoked at the development and can't wait to see consumer version of the products and games designed to work with the technology. Eve Valery looks extremely sexy.
I'm also hopping that this display can outright replace a computer monitor for movies and work productivity as well. Imagine having 6 virtual monitors all within the 1 head unit. As you look left/right/up/down it will display the "Virtual" monitor and content on it. Possibilities are endless.
Fire away.

Facebook of all places, really? Woulda rather hear Microsoft buy it, at least it woulda still be pushing vr for gaming in that situation. Now we probably goin and get farm simulator 2015 and some social sheet.

I wouldn't mind if they had sponsor it, at least it'll have a gamer portal/social aspect to it, but not outright buy out.

Facebook Could Give You the Oculus Rift You Always Wanted
http://gizmodo.com/facebook-could-give-you-the-oculus-you-always-wanted-1551561433
I personally don't buy it, the rift can turn out to be a great tool for other applications, but I just have this jarring feeling that hardcore gaming is going to suffer as a result.

Ok, so the plans to expand on the Oculus rift beyond gaming sounds good on paper, but if they really want to spread this to education and social media, is it just me in thinking of the humans on the ship in outer space from Wall-E the scary future to the kids now coming up?
Scary future that I may never live to see, but it is discouraging.... *unplugs future version of the Oculus from grand kid's head* go read a book yer wippersnapper! Why back in my day we had things called libraries with real physical books that used something called "Imagination" to power what yer dang kids callin' VR now. *rants like Cranky Kong then falls asleep abruptly* zzzz.....

I've not been impressed or happy with most ANYTHING FB does when it changes, guys, etc. Each fb update is have wtf moments, look at when they bought whatsapp, service was down for a whole day+ and thats BEFORE they start messing around.
I leave hope to chance, that will will do awesome things but I dread that should they not it would become one of those shoulda woulda coulda FBcked it up.

This article explains better than I ever could why the internet reacted with shock and horror to this news...
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2014-03-26-oculus-sale-meets-mixed-reactions-from-developers
I get what FB is aiming for here...I really do, but I can't help but agree with Notch and all
the Kickstarter backers who feel as if they've been 'betrayed'.
The fact is...Oculus VR's R&D budget just increased about tenfold...and could actually see the Rift get into the hands of masses of consumers faster.
...and therein lies the rub.
The devs, and PC-gamer geeks would have certainly bought one...but that market is simply not enough to make the Rift
a financial success. Mass market acceptance of a FB Rift however, just might be the thing that makes VR 'mainstream', which equals dollars.
As much as we might want to look upon this development as a step back... I see this as a nice push for VR as a concept.
Who knows...we might get even more competitors stepping up to offer alternative devices. Sony has already stepped up.
We'll just have to get used to the idea of giving VR pokes.
