« on: May 10, 2004, 07:54:28 AM »
my pc came wid 333 ddr ram

im lookin to upgrade...should i use the same 333 or go wid a faster speed ?

an i dont have a book for the mobo..thaz y im askin..an its  a HP machine...an i not sure wha ram it come wid..so i need to know wha ram will definetly work on the machine

the machine can hold up to 2 gigs...so im tinkin of puttin atleast 1GB....if puttin the 1 gig should i use 2- 512 sticks or 1- 1 GB module ?

an if i put 1 GB in the future i may look to drop in the additional GB makin it 2...not sure yet...want to see wha kinda performance i will get from the 1 GB first.

how much do uall recommend i put in, speed an all dat?

thanks

If you have Windows XP or Windows 2000 you can see how much ur memory usage is.Try 512 first then go to 1GB if you need it.You can use 2x512 sticks then a 1GB stick if you think you need all that RAM (2x512MB & 1x1GB provided you have 3 DDR slots)You might be able to physically check the board for a manufacturer name and then check out a site to see what kind of RAM the board can take or get a program that can tell you what kind of memory your board can take.I think Sisoft sandra does that.If you can't tell then just stick with DDR 333

Yes i agree with him totatly stick with the DDR333 and pretty much what he said is up to mark

I think Kingston ram would work but it would be good to know what model # system u have before u go and buy that

Just go to ww.crucial.com and go through their process of selecting what machine you have and they will pick out the ram that will work with it. Alternatively, download and install the Belarc Adviser (http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html), it'll let you know a bit about your system to help with the decision process.

My suggestion tho, if you've got 333MHz ram in there, get 333MHz ram to supplement it, you don't really wanna mix and match ram, doesn't always work out to be as compatible as they would like yo u to believe.

Alos, 1GB modules are usually significantly more expensive than 2x512MB modules...just thought it was worth mentioning.

How much RAM do you have right now and how many slots are there? As cdx2k1 said, consider moving to 512 first and see if that is good enough for you, then you can always move up to 1GB in the future if you really want to.

you should keep with the 333 ram speed, you won't notice any difference with faster ram unless you doing something serious like 3d rendering..

more ram will always help, see how much ram you use first.. makes no sense to get 512mb if you have never used more than 200mb of ram...

Sisoft Sandra might be able to tell you the manufacturer of the motherboard.from there you can check the motherboard's website to see compatible RAM etc.

Belarc Adviser will do the same and with a FAR smaller install footprint...but your choice really.
